Zuzone Hub - Network States vs Coordinated Futures

Devcon 8 · 4 Nov 2026 · 25:08

Strategy and operations executive Dragonfly leads an interactive Zuzone hub session built on one question: who do you trust? A thought experiment about founding a new country contrasts online communities that grow into network states with communities built on meeting in person, drawing on Zuzalu and the Network State movement. It closes on coordination tools as the work that matters for builders.

[music] [music] Everyone is selling the dream. Every humans want to control the humans. And that is the game, the oldest game the humanity has ever played at each other. But I strongly believe we are now at a stage of the crossroad for humanity that we need to start having those conversations very openly. And it comes down to one thing using Vitalik's own word. Who do you trust?

My name is Dragonfly and the reason for I I go by Dragonfly is because Dragonfly is an instant that been around for the last 300 years, 300,000 years. just homing around and collecting human experiences. So together we're going to play a little game together and that game is launching a new country in 25 minutes trying to form a system of government and trying to decide together which is the best country. So don't forget it's a little experiment. All right.

And then you're probably expecting to find words on the slide. There's no words. It's a little game of imagination. There is that guy who wants to control or that lady wants to control these humans, these amazing humans. And right on that side, that guy is believe that democracy is amazing. We get to elect who leaders are and they get to listen to us and do and give us good roles and various amenities and I'm want this to be interactive with the audience as well. So I want you to go along with me and on this side these guys believe that um well we don't trust these guys on this side because we elect them every

four years and then they screw us over. Uh maybe it's actually good for us to have a benevolent dictator which we now call communism and then you can see this conversation is just on handing conversation. I grew up in Africa and I've witnessed two military coup and the military take over and then they sell the dream of democracy and the democracy comes over and then people then get disillusioned and and then say the the government has been sold over. So, it's a question that we need to start having as humanity, as a collective, irregardless of race or color, because at the end of the day, this little guy there wants power from these guys and wants power from this guy. And

these two guys give away their collective ability for this guy over there or this lady over there to rule over them. So if you're on this side of the spectrum, you believe that we can elect our leaders. We can trust them enough to do the right thing for us. If you're on this side, these guys and these ladies believe that we just want to make money and we just want to functioning system and we don't really care about which of the heism we belongs to.

And now I want you also to come along with me. The first two guys if you choose any of those then let's try and play a little scenario of all of us on the internet. All right cuz there's a lot of communities now the forming on the internet. These guys believe how do we trust the guy at the top? How do we coordinate ourel? The guys on the right believes that internet is a great thing. It's a magical thing. Is something that is very revolutionary and is going to change the life of humanity forever. All right.

These guys in the mind of these guys are those communities that a anthropologist will call primitive communities. the indigenous communities, the local communities, and they just love their culture. They just want to break bread together. They want to sit down together every evening. They want to hug each other. They want to meet together in physical spaces. Right? And I just want to warn there is no right or wrong answer. There's no right or wrong. It's a literal scenario.

The guys on the right create their forum online and everybody thinks like I call myself dragonfly. That's not name on my passport, right? But I've just decided I just want to be dragonfly because maybe I just don't want to tell people what woman names are. And then there's another jig and fly and speed and fly. and we all meet online and we have a common values, common heaters and we have common vision right same way blockchain started I've been riding this space since 2015 and I remember seeing Vitalik in 2004 Defcon in London selling the dream to all of us and it was amazing there was energy in

2017 let's go for our online community let's the bank let's create our own banks um all these bankers and we're going to create our own thing let's launch our own token and create new internet money. It's magical. And we all met online. We don't know ourselves. And we all sell tokens to ourselves and we all buy into the ICOs and create liquidities and then we all still at some point realize that we need to meet maybe once a year for defect to kind of put faces to those names. So you see if you believe in this construct it works right and that's why I said there's no right or wrong answer.

On this side, these guys are thinking, "No, I don't trust the internet. I don't trust a random guy I just met online. I don't know what they've done, where they coming from. I want to be able to meet you in person and shake your hands and and break bread with you. I need to be able to trust you." All right. By now, if you're coming along with me, you will see that in those two versions of country creation or human coordination, there is a team that is beginning to form. Trust.

Would we trust? And so this experimentation, the creation of country, creation of human coordination, bringing humans together, it's a conversation that will never die. it will continuous but when you begin sitting your brain right now you're thinking okay these guys I want to meet you in person doesn't necessarily means he doesn't wants to use internet it just means maybe he's bought ICO in 2017 and he's got scammed it just means maybe his family friends have told him that by this ICO and they said where do you meet that guy I met him online forum and and he lost all his

savings. So you see it's not that this guy doesn't doesn't believe in that guy but also this guy believes that the world is not a global village and I can have conversation on Zoom and we can build trust on Zoom and Google Meets and on on Reddit and all these amazing forums and Ethereum forums and all these beautiful places and we all convinced once a year but then it comes down to one thing. Who do we trust? Right. I'm being very mindful of time.

And if you kind of pay attention here, this little guy over here, they're like the gatekeepers. This little guy over here is more than a gatekeeper. He's what I call the feelers. He's a good he loves selling propaganda because these guys only dream to him and his job is to go recruit these guys and if you're hell enough in the blockchain space since in 2017 the first job title was called blockchain evangelist.

So this guy is like the blockchain evangelist and his job is to bring new guys into this online forum. All right, these guys they're very happy. They're the existing institutions as you can see they got love in their heart. your JP Morgans and all the Black Rocks and all these institutions, they're very happy. They got love in their heart and so so amazing because they're just trying to see how the whole things will end. And you can see this guy, they're not really shaking because they're in charge. They don't really care as long as free market economy works. And we get to decide who governs who. And we get to decide who actually dictates the market price and the market movement and the

flow of liquidity. We're all right. We're very happy. All right. We don't care whether you create your life for you. You're still coming to us to raise money. We all right. We're your VC. We're cool. But there is this guy here. He's feeling is losing the trust because he's used to meeting people in person and hugging and he's feeling a little bit left out. You can see there's a little puddle out there. He feels who do I trust? is getting paranoid every day and he's he's not helping it because when you look at here there's a little mail being delivered every day through online forums that is pushing out a lot of companies been hack and so this guy is not willing to participate but yet

these guys in the middle are looking to control both of them like I said there is no right or wrong it's just a little scenario him. But at this stage, you're asking yourself, who do I trust? Who do you trust? Do I trust the guy who has a vision and creat online forum and then create visions and eaters around that online forum and then coordinate in real in person?

if he belongs to the network state movement, it's taking that shape, right? And I know Baj is around here and I hope he doesn't um kind of smack my head at the end of this session, but it's great. It's great to have those communities where we all kind of bring together and then kind of meet in person and kind of where you put high agency people together. It's powerful. It works. entire >> but also >> what about those so-called primitive people in terms of the ancient knowledge in terms of those people who just want to be human and I want to call out my bias I'm a big fan of human layer a framework that I

developed 10 years ago and I've social experiment to test in various various capacities and I strongly believe that at some point the question will come to who do you trust The question will be more and more less on how do we build the systems. The question will become more and more in how do we self-govern and self-coordinate. If you don't pay attention, I've kind of flipped the game now.

I flipped the game because now you can see these guys then believe. Now we have this another magic lay on top of the internet. >> It's called AI. >> Come on. Go folks. You got to have your own agent. Come on. You got to make money. Create your own agent. They can trade for you. Make you millionaires and billionaires overnight. Right. Cool. And so this guy built and now he's going to build a data centers. Then it's just doesn't in hand because to this guy he just believe the internet it's an amazing tool of coordination and for those who subscribes those ideals and eats yes it works for them it's a no there's no right or

wrong these guys they're not getting left behind as well you see when they started a little bit scattered but they now they're now beginning to build their own hubs All right for those in San Francisco in Ethereum space we have the frontier hub folks will go to hedge city uh folks to Africa which I co-lead as well we have permanent hub in both Ghana and Kenya and we got folks as well in Austria hops common hub and people are beginning to see how can we actually yes it's good for us to move around on the internet and be magic but we want to be humans we want to meet in physical spaces and So we begin to have conversation about how

do we create an hub and then we begin to see the likes of the of the network state movement and the Zanzali movement and all these amazing movements and it's important to understand that this is a conversation that will never stop because when you look at it from when the constructing times of how do we actually coordinate human how do we coordinate power how do we bring humans together who decides to organize and who decides to actually dictate who gets what. Because in creating any community, in creating a country, there has to be rules and regulations.

And so in democracy, we have the constitution. And so in unlike community, we have the manifestos, the community bounds, the community agreements. But then this guy in the middle, he's very happy because it's the money guy. It's just not bothered. He's the money guy because he gets to influence this to some extent. You also get to influence this to some extent.

But then as you begin to play the scenario along with me, we get to this junction. And I strongly believe this is where humanity is at the moment. And it's very great timing election is going on in America. There's a debate where the Republicans or Democrats is going to win. There is a lot of conversation going across the world in times of the power of your passport and now that open doors for you and so I've had a conversation a lot of people who from Nigeria for example who cannot come to defcon in India because they all their visas were rejected

and then you get a hero in Europe right now where immigrants are blamed for everything they come into a country they're going to invade their country you can see that divide and rule convers ation never goes. It comes to one thing. What do we trust to participate? And this is where we are as humanity. Well, do we trust the king as a absolute authority and power? Well, should we trust democracy and we all cast a vote and believe that this guy is going to do the right thing?

Well, should we all just build hubs across the world? You can see these boxes. And believe that these hobs in the future becomes a a coordination point to move humans around and self-govern. Oh, there's a lot of Gen Z's right now. were thinking would do we actually trust. So as you play that scenario along with me, I want you to begin to see that should we trust the king and believe that the king reigns supreme?

Should we trust democracy and believe that vote will count? She will just leave these two aside and self organize herself. I don't really know what to do. You can see this is the junction we find ourel now. >> But whether we like it or not, humans still want to lead us. >> All these four boxes still wants trust. They want someone they trust. because there are too many >> whether we trust the king. We want to be able to select a king that loved us that would do what we want [snorts] >> in the interum community. Maybe that

will be Vitalic, >> right? >> And we want to be able to trust Vitalic that Ethereum and all the core developers are building this wonderful decentralized century technology that they're going to have the love of people heart and they're not going to compromise the tech, right? Should we trust democracy? If we're going to bring that to web three, that will be Dows and believe that these self-organized autonomous organizations are just going to launch their own token and put them the love of the people in heart. Has this work? Because we've al we've we've actually tried all these. We've had blockchains, online communities that goes through this process of having one supreme

leader >> wherever he says goes. >> Marine drive. >> We've done a social experiment in the web space in the blockchain space as humanity of actually self-organizing oursel and believing that whoever we choose to represent all of us will have a love heart. We've also have those who've experimented in times of let's build hubs and self coordinate and have our communities and we can do our own thing. And there's nothing wrong in all of these scenarios. But I believe we need to pay attention to this last guy cuz this last guy I've observed those three guys and I've seen that there is no perfect system in all of them.

I mean might have six minute left. I'm inviting you to continue this conversation in your own private space because humanity across the world is at a crossroad and whether death can happen in India I know that's controversial and whether developers here are B players or C player you can see who determines who is What determines who is in high agency?

Who determines who gets to play? Who determines who is smart, who is not smart, who determines who gets to belong, who make the rules. And whoever make the rules, do we trust them to make the right rule for the community? Human coordination and trust will become the biggest thing will become the biggest problem that humanity has to solve together beyond technology. and we'll get to determine who is right. Irregardless the way we go, irregardless of how it ends,

it is important for us to have humility as human collective across the world that there is so much I don't know as Michael. Now I've given my name away now. I started from Dragonfly online community anonymous to Michael because I want to be human and get to know you and so that when you walk out that you don't call me Dragonfly, you call me Michael. Irregardless of where we are as humanity across the world, the conversation around human coordination and trust is only going to get bigger. It's not going away.

And I believe that web 3 is the is the biggest social experimentation since 2017. And there is a whole lot anyone who is interested in human coordination and how trust get to determine how we go next in terms of selfcoordination has a lot to learn from web 3 cuz I believe generation coming after us will actually study web 3 as a piece of experiment to determine how human self coordinates in the future. But I want you to also take a moment together as we're playing these scenarios in our brain.

>> Everybody wants power. Everybody wants control. But the question is what if nobody wants power and nobody wants control? Is that possible? And that's why I'm very big on on the experimentation going on in the Zuzalia community. I was privileged to be part of for Zuzalu in Montenegro and it was great to see a lot of amazing people leaving Zuzalu community and creating their own thing. That decentralization of human coordination and I want to give a shout out to Zuzone as well for amazing work that the team are doing. the decentralization of human coordination get to allow Michael to present at

Defcon on a global stage and that is something I want to invite all of you to think about for a minute. The fact of bringing defcon to India and to become a controversial topic it's humble enough to actually for us to ask ourself who actually determines what defcon is who actually determines which community get to participate who gets actually get to set the rules who gets to determine who is smart who is our agency who gets to make the rules and who get to create a trust because if I got to make the rules for someone who looks like me alone, then I'm not creating any form of

coordination. I'm only moving towards authoritarian. But if can have the humility to admit that there's so much I don't know and there's so much out there in the world for me to learn, then I might be more open in times of creating something that we're all looking for, which is trust. >> Before you give your power away, ask yourself one thing. Who do we get to trust? Because this will be the next biggest question that humanity will have to figure out for the next 100 years and it's not going to get better. I'm not a doomer. I'm a techno optimist and I believe that humanity can pull together and I strongly believe that the future is coordination.

network is great but the human serability to coordinate itself irregardless of what you believe in is going to be very key. All right, I have one minute left. I want to invite all of you to begin to have a construct in times of what kind of future you want to live in, what kind of state do we want to create, what kind of country do you want to create? Because as a collective, we cannot play in our own little games anymore. And I want to use London as a typical example. They said by 2050, the people you're going to see in London are not going to be completely white or black.

They're going to be brown. >> And so instead of you fighting that, it's an invitation for you to ask yourself, how are these people going to manage identity and culture and coordination? >> Okay. And every technology in the future will not just be a technology. It will be something that brings humans together that creates the layer of trust and able to bring human together to selfcoordinate themselves. >> I'm proposing to the world today that the future of humanity is not just network. >> Yeah.

>> The future of humanity is coordination. And those humans who can build coordination tools to bring humans together regardless of race or color are the people that will real humanity for the next 100 years. I want to say thank you all for listening to me. It's been amazing. And thank you to the teams at Defcon for putting this >> [music]
