ZKV presents...Privacy on Polkadot - Introducing Phala Network - Marvin Tong, Phala

5 May 2021 · 14:10

Marvin Tong, founder of Phala Network, introduces the project at this ZKV session on privacy within the Polkadot ecosystem, recorded in April 2021. The talk positions Phala as a confidential computing project built on Substrate, part of a broader look at privacy-preserving infrastructure being built across Polkadot's parachain ecosystem.

[Music] my name is marin chung i'm the founder and ceo of fire network so i'm so happy that you know so many um privacy preserving services in pogba ecosystem come here to share all the information and yeah it's an honor to be invited here so i will make it quick so uh yeah our team is founded in our uh 2018 q4 so by that time uh when we uh the the prosper of decentralized applications ecosystem already rise up so by then we realized the one thing that

uh if you want to achieve the true wife's reversion like gallonwood uh provided uh we think uh we need to like you know use a trusted least way to run the applications but in the meanwhile we need to keep the confidentiality to the users otherwise no one will use web story applications so then we begin to um explore the technical possibilities uh to web 3. so uh basically speaking uh pharah is a more than just another you know blockchain offering confidentialities uh i will uh pharah is um based on fallout we provide uh three

major services to the community the first one is blockchain itself you know combines the p2p network is trusted execution environment hardware to um verify the software variables of blockchain for additional security assurance and we all based on following we can build a privacy preserving cloud service and because the cloud is so you know special that it can keep the confidentiality when you are using the data so in the meanwhile we can provide your you know like data control services back to the user so we call it take back control from the internet and uh you know uh

network the blockchain itself is a privacy preserving blockchain based on substrate everybody know that and we aim to become a person of kusama and pogdog and uh uh for of course you know in early this year we will join the kusama star ocean and after that we will join the pokedog and uh the specific function of foreign network the blockchain is a confidential smart contract you know it means that you can write the smart contract with a trusted easily but in the meanwhile you can keep the privacy preserving and uh in another hand you know pharah is a com

cloud computing protocol because fire managers or global network of computation resources is very well performance and the ability to scale the performance uh to rival you know like amazon or google uh cloud platform rather than just like uh bitcoin or ethereum so this is very a special part of pharah that um uh we we and um uh about when we're speaking to the data on the poke.light paper there is one sentence is that data is becoming a resource more valuable than already

but we are giving it you know for free so uh the final you know steps or the final version of our team is that we want to take back users uh control of their data you know to themselves not to the you know like the google facebook companies so this is very important and uh based on this concept and the confidential smart contract ability we applied a branch webster foundation called web3 and lighting so it's a you know a google analytics-like but decentralized version uh data collecting and data managing tool not only for the developer for the application builders

but also for yourself for everybody user it will coming up after the blockchain it can run very well as a person and uh yeah i think the key part of today is i want to share something called technology of pharah we all know that there are zero knowledge there's npc there are trusted execution variables three major technology of privacy on blockchain now uh pharah is using um a a confidential you know technology called tee trust execution environment to ensure that the owners of every walker node can purchase your potentially

confidential code of data or all data sorry uh even while running it for you so um crucially the final you know the the the consensus layer the gatekeepers uh can manage the blockchain also manage the uh entry and encryption between user and worker nodes this provides the you know additional layer of security uh to make sure we don't rely not solely on the keys to protect data privacy and as a uh dirty uh just mentioned uh we we both think that blockchain is a very valid uh you know way to help to improve

the security level of te itself the single te is not so security as you imagine so uh this is by far i use a te blockchain hybrid architecture so the the the code technical uh part is here how do you verify this t and blockchain you know in two sides we uh the architecture of pharah is that when when he needs to verify to blockchain that he will send a remote attestation code to uh intel or amd hardware systems and we after we got an are a report from the ge inside we will use the bridge the the bridge between t

and substrate you know to write the uh extreme sync to the blockchain so that the key pairs and the public key from t and the and the blockchain and they can trust them with each other and when we if uh uh what we want to verify from t from blockchain to t we run a very light uh client of substrate inside te so that we can you know like authorize the uh set uh the the the information from ancient to option so that's the basic concept of but of course it's a more completely standard because there are so

many questions the basic design of fallout you know uh the blockchain entities is that we mean to ensure the security and the confidentiality of blockchain and smart contracts and then we're introducing no more security improvements pharah is able to defend the or the ones that attack how you know how is the key question we use three major roles the client which all you know operates on normal devices equipment without any special hardware requirements and we also use te worker which operates on t and servers at the computing nodes

for the confidential smart contracts and we also have a role called gatekeepers as you can see they are operates on te workers and serves as the authorities and the key managers of the key workers so this is a very a big improvement for the traditional you know key architecture blockchain so this gives us some of the ones the privacy the consist the code integrity and safety i will not say more here so we got two big advantages from um you know fallout network in this uh computing uh architecture the first one is that we can run

confidential smart content because you can uh build a trust bridge between blockchain the client itself and the te right so uh in this perspective we can run date without any data you know exploring into the public we can run very confidentiality program for the user themselves and also authorization key is in user's hand so uh in our confidential smart client contract we have command like operations and query and another hand this gives us a huge cloud like you know

service on substrate and to all poke. you know ecosystem because you know the traditional blockchains you know every server run the same program it means that if you get a 10 servers but you get only one server performance because all of them run the same program and in centralized cloud although if you have 10 servers you have 10 servers uh you know performance but you can't trust them the control is in the you know the the cloud platforms hands but uh we combine these advantages together so this is follow where the trustees meet

the performance is a very uh is we can call it the trustees cloud uh yeah so compared with the competitors like oasis license secret we have many uh advantages i'm not saying a lot here but uh yeah and uh when we speak into the consensus fala like uh we have a very specific one that we call it proof of cpu which is satoshi's you know traditional version although it's not approval work but the the control is minus the a6 hand but in fallout we can really make a happen that every cpu has one vote how do we make that happen

we separate the consensus and the computation so it's um uh it's a two layers of the the the computation and the consensus uh to make that happen uh we design a very specific economic you know uh to the pub to the to the miners to the cpu manners and to the gatekeepers that the consensus uh they can uh further sorry the the gatekeepers they can adjust you know a responsibility for the consensus and the cpu providers they can only responsibility to the computations so uh yeah so this is

why our economic uh give 80 percentage of our token to the miners to the community you know so this is a very fair distribution to the to the to the public and uh yeah so uh for now we already test a lot of cpus by the fire community and we have a like a very clear motherboard and devices these that reach standard for reach level of security so that uh we can uh can go in this year that we will launch our purchase

on consumer first as a canary network and in our test net for now we already got you know like 14 000 of course cpus running for pharah it means you know it's a quite big uh you know computing cloud already but we will like increase it more and more so that until one day we can replace google or amazon you know cloud service so uh yes so uh uh after we are launching kusama's uh as a person we will not only provide our cloud service but also we will create some very interesting use cases

visa privacy preserving so that uh not only for developers but you know general portal community and uh webster user kind of got a feeling that oh you can do this oh you can do that so uh i will put some examples as we got backward which will preserve privacy or transactions and secret device you know you know to the to the d5 user and we got web stream like keys for the data user and we also will provide some bridges that bridging uh from the other blockchains into te so that you know it's a most scalability

breach way rather than game theory based um two-way stage so yeah that's it i think uh uh yeah in fact and this is me marin we over we always covered our eyes to you know impressive the people that you know we are a privacy preserving uh service project you know so uh yes thanks for all of your time thank you
