Where Lava Network Fits in The Modular Thesis

23 Mar 2024 · 16:35

Robbie Klages sits down with Lava Network co-founder Yair Cleper and the project's CTO, Gil Binder, at ETHDenver to discuss how modular RPC infrastructure fits into the broader modular blockchain thesis. They cover Lava's decentralized data access layer, why existing RPC providers struggle to scale privacy and speed across thousands of modular chains, and where Lava sits relative to monolithic incumbents in the space.

[Music] [Applause] [Music] he GM fellas welcome Denver have you guys been to eat Denver before uh it's actually our second so we were last year I think it's a bit different Vibes know there's a bullishness in the air yeah

you feel it can you feel the energ yeah we never F bullish book bull market before so I think uh definitely yeah I mean we were we were Media Partners of modular day yesterday and it was hacked absolutely you could it was so busy you could hardly move around like in the event so I think there's a lot of excitement around obviously the market there's a lot of excitement around certain sectors modular and modularity being being a very very uh uh timely one um and very exciting one so would love to understand uh your perspectives on the modular thesis and then we'll dive into lava and and uh how it fits in if it

does yeah sure so you know I think uh modularity is like a way for um with free to scale because you can have all these components that being pre-built and they've been built in a way that's uh very reliable and you can just rely on them build on the shoulders of of giants instead of Reinventing uh the will scratch every single time uh so I think modity is is very strong and we build lava around being a modular data X Slayer um so I think as we see rollups uh and more and more chains come into play they're going to be using this Wonder little stat yeah very cool okay so uh the world of uh bajillion rollups there's be there's going to be so many um all of these

applications whether uh we're going to see general purpose rollups or application specific rollups I think everyone aligns on the thesis that we're going to see a lot more of these Sovereign execution environments um that ultimately interact with with the rest of the the web 3 landscape um so given that now we have a lot more uh literally we have a lot more of these execution viets a lot more of these modules um a big big questions how we're going to connect all of them for seamless and easy user experiences so would love to understand how lava uh attempts to solve that problem yeah definitely so I think like before jumping in to what is lava I

think it's very important to understand our journey you know we we've been uh in web to and uh followed a couple of startups before for so very techy and have a background of scaling product yeah the first thing we realized and it came into web three is that the infrastructure is shipped and it's very very hard to uh communicate it with this data access sale that g was mentioning before so I think if today doesn't matter with which thesis you choose right if you go totic chain if you go to uh the modular uh phes or um the wallup Centric phes at the end of the day um the next Bull Road going to be impacted by how many deps and

application will be built on those skins and um if you think that there are few different layers to that making a lot of impact whether it's the execution layer where you know data availability in consensus or the settlement layer at the end of the day the DS need to speak with the data access they need to R write dat and if we don't take care of that and not make it scalable available much less fragmented um we believe that the barel to entry for DS would be much harder and that's exactly what we St about awesome okay so traditionally um users interact with uh the data they Access Data

through rbc's um that's kind of like the channel of communication so could you kind of like tell us like what really is an RPC that's like the data point the access point like what why is it necessary what like we need to access the data right that's yeah that course first first problem the RPC lets us do that I said my question is how does the RPC work um and we can get it to the N yeah so so think about uh RPC is like uh when you talk to Facebook we go to any website you need to go and get that data from them and they have like database right and in the end blockchains are just like a um a with sensus based distributed data base so how do you go and get that

data so in rpcs when you go to your wallet we check your balance that balance uses the RPC connection to get that balance when you send a transaction you send that to an RPC out and then distribute it and gossips about it all across the network so this is basically what RPC is so so I just want to make sure I understand correct so the the RPC is gossiping this question and like I ask the RPC what is my balance on this network and the RPC goes and and gossips to all almost the gossip part is only for transactions the uh weary part is uh an RPC node usually has its own State its own database essentially and it just sares that database and gets your balance and that node is uh responsible

for syncing with all the other nodes in the blockchain again in the latest State as the blockchain continues and progress so awesome as as one of the full nodes in the distributed yeah network uh but to keep it simple it's just the server you talk to to get information right you need to know your balance you want to know the spot CR of M pair all that information is coming from an RP not okay and and now in the world of bajillion rollups all of them are modular um we now have all of these we have a ton of databases right yeah okay so now we need to access data from these databases and that's what lava helps us do so think about we were talking about the modular thesis right and we were saying you know there's going to be you

know thousands of F chains and rollups and even one litic chains maybe not thousands but many of them we see them already but what is an important aspect of modularity is also composability how do you how do you connect all these chains right because who's going to direct with a thousand chains so difficult and complex so the next thing over um I think over a modularity is also possibil in the next level of chain abstraction completely abstract chain and making it GL friendly for to use so when we build lava we thinking that you know lava is like that layer and that basically like going from imp to this for the morei people but basically it's that protocol that gives you the uh the

ease of use for developers to access all these data making and for us we were like uh not not seeing only the fragmentation though but nobody going to run NOS for thousands of chance and you sit to today the cetro provider are hitting the the the the top of what they can um you know what they can offer up to double uh digits amount of chain 20 maybe maybe 30 but what about if we go to the you know to the thousands of f roller who can support that and who can bring the DS to communicate with those St yeah and and the familiar names of the states that I that I recognize are teams like infura or alimine I think is

going do block Dam and great so um why are so they're bottled there they're they're not able to scale they're great right they they build really great reliable services and we we learned a lot and we're learning a lot from how they ground their operations but think about uh scaling not in terms of requests per second but think about think about scaling in the number of chains they have to support corre it's just so difficult because uh it requires different operation almost for every single in each one of these nodes to be efficient in it and and and also what they are facing challenges with the within DS if you know they hit the single point of failure if they are down so they need know to start implementing

load balancers and backups and and and many stuff many many routing solution for that that we built as a in protocol um modules of what is lava bringing to together maybe I can explain how it would work like when we have a thousand yeah how lava would support So in lava uh we have a concept called SP it's basically a specification and it tells you what apis what RPC uh commands uh these nodes need to do so for example for one rollup you have one command for another you have another um in lava anyone uh can come and propose these rollups these specs on chain uh and whilst they do that they can get also a

small reward throughout uh upgrading it maintaining it so basically it's harnessing the bar of the community to come in and advocate for their rollup and bring it to L you get all that service one more thing that I think is like really cool and really sets us apart from um other uh providers seiz provider and and also the seized one is that anyone can come on chain and basically put tokens in a PO on that P so let's say you go and you ring uh let's say blast you bring into llama anyone uh on another can or any blockchain can come in with any token on a pull to incentivize node Runners to start giving that

service but in their na native token I do have I do have questions there but just what maybe one one thing to add uh as you mentioned the great centralized provider that some of the already working with us we don't do the RPC we not serving but we bringing providers and kind of the distribution channel for them but in some chains we find out that the super tech users are you know running not anyway and but they don't get monetized for the existing infa so think about the concept we started with wber for NOS right um they signing up in five minutes and receiving like uh rewards for the uh the up and running in consisting INF over there very cool I'll

tell you guys a quick story when I first got it to ethereum it was 2016 and uh in order to B some e in a non-custodial wallet at the time I had to run a full load so I had to download the entire blockchain in order to have a wallet Rings the bill fact and no one was monetizing me to do that right so now so now you mention that there are node Runners that are running these nodes that they're not they're not getting monetized and you're now able to incentivize that oper if you're running the maybe you can join no that there's a lot more to that story but I'll tell you guys another time we're like a distribution challeng for them right okay okay I mean let's talk more about this economy because I think a lot of like what our audience is very

excited about is the opportunities to get involved and I've earned some some toets as a result of Performing some Serv providing services or performing some operations so what are what are the different node the participants in this lava economy there's node Runners and then and then yeah so so uh we have uh validators which are basically uh no runs for lava that progress the blockchain we have have um basically what we call providers which is which are uh entities or people who running nodes like you run a full node for ethereum and they provide access to Consumers on our chain and we have champkin champkin are um these Advocates uh for rums or all chains that they come

they build a spec they push it on chain and they keep maintaining it uh whatever software is required to be behind it to support these RS very cool okay we present them now also the the Foundation is presenting the the the magma uh yeah the magma uh program now to incentivize you with point system um they doing what they what they call uh for non-technical uses everyone every crypto user that has a w can just uh sign up and immediately change the endpoint to love one and start receiving points so basically if you really believe in the values of web three if you think think about all the

values that brought us you to jump into this Rabbit Hole you know privacy censorship resistance um singing point of fa we mention so all of that are solvable and if you want to be part of this journey join the M pom Point yeah and that that's a very easy way to get involved right it's only a matter of switching out the RPC end point in your medas or your your went through wallet Yeah we actually we we think it it's actually too simple know what's happening left to wait it's in s we we we were not we were not expecting that you know we we launched it we announced that and 200,000 wallet and me our losers just join anding that you know the team has been

working like around around day like and and we we we are very lucky it's like our team in lava the initial contributors a lot now what mean building with the community is amazing and it's feel like family they love a fun yeah very cool no that that's all right I mean I think uh I think we covered quite a bit here and like uh this is a great introduction to our community I mean we can we can certainly talk you know at length about some of the uh the technical specs um I guess one one uh thing that maybe we can end on is like a theoretical conversation here which uh is like let's say that there's a new Rook right can we walk through that like what that process

is um from proposing it all the way through to a user uh maintaining that yeah of course so the first step would be to basically uh see what technology stack it's based on for example if it's based on op stat uh or it's based on arbitr we have pre-main specs with that so the champion will take that spec uh change a chain ID and make sure it works tested locally make sure it works and then uplo the governance proposal on chain uh once the proposal is on uh the the chain can vote on that and then that can take couple hours and as soon as that is deployed uh providers U basically NOS can join and stake tokens on that chain on that spec uh in tendem the ecosyst come on and say okay I see

that the spec is on we're going to give uh let's say a th000 tokens every month not runers on this chain now users are able to access this chain and all of these do providers through our protocol and at the end of the month the providers get paid based on how compl the service F how much service they get awesome so based on cup time yeah uh and and uh fresh list of data is very important fresh the latest the latest block right yeah and think about all the rollups and chains that want to be deployed on celestian Dimension right um they need to go through the same hustle like they need to start Contracting different centralized provider have uh you know working contract with them try

to understand the end of the month what's what's the pilling looks like we take the burden away from each and every those rollers by you know what we what Gil mentioned before the ibbc public RBC um all of that is under the hood within inside to the community is there whealing and rewarding at the end of the months and bringing strong provider for make all the equos system scalable uh that's what we call build whatever were very Co incentivized public rpcs connecting the modular landscape cheers that's that's a lot of one hope you guys enjoy eating that thank you man
