Web3 weekly rollup: macro update, NFT ticketing, Ethereum roadmap and Klima DAO

29 Jul 2022 · 1:13:50

Web3 Academy hosts Jay Hamilton and Kyle Reidhead open with a macro update on markets rallying after the Fed signaled it may stop raising rates. They then cover Unlock Protocol's NFT tickets for EthCC in Paris, Unstoppable Domains, and the claim that about 40 percent of Ethereum's roadmap is built across the merge, surge, verge, purge and splurge. Klima DAO is the DAO of the month, described as aiming to raise the price of carbon offsets.

uh our social guy and content writer at web3 academy uh he put this like contest where for every follower we got over 1 000 um i would have to do a push-up on the roll-up and um yeah we started like 800 and something whatever it was uh and we are now at yeah 1045 so great job community uh and great job raul and getting that many followers in a week and a half but uh now i do some push-ups which i'm cool that sounds fun 40 45 push-ups no joke it's no joke it's gonna be uh you're gonna be out of breath it can be sweaty i won't even i won't even break a sweat oh yeah right i got the ac just pumped right now

yeah just like a little like we got some uh like uh like this camera magic tricks happen here you're like it looks like you're doing push-ups but you're not actually all right jay what's up today come on what's on the show we got we got a macro update uh to start off i want to give you guys an idea of what's going on in the markets and it's the sort of macro outlook uh we're going to talk about some nft ticketing really exciting to see um yeah nft so much application and nft ticketing is huge for onboarding web3 subscriptions ethereum roadmap and the dow of the month uh along with my gosh so many other things it's a it's a hot news week

this week but before we start let's share some gratitude i'll just go first i'll jump in here first uh i am grateful for the miracle of flight and i say that because i am about to get on a plane and fly to portugal in a few hours to see my boy and our team is getting together there and i am practicing gratitude leading into what i have heard is very tough times traveling these days uh lots of delays people losing bags uh canada super understaffed i've heard it all over the world doesn't really think it's

only just canada i mean i've been traveling i'm in seven countries this this uh this year so far i had no issues except for in canada although i didn't really have any issues in canada either so maybe i'm just lucky you're just lucky i think uh but uh grateful grateful for travel grateful for for all the uh people working working the the security and working uh the airlines and working the airports and allowing me to to travel and enjoy uh enjoy some time in europe okay what are you grateful for i am grateful for um our clients so jay and i outside of web three academy we run a a marketing agency called impact digital marketing which works with many of the top like crypto newsletters uh and media platforms uh clients like

bankless and real vision and lark davis and uh the list goes on um and what i really love about this other than being in crypto web 3 is it's we work with a lot of really really smart people and so i get to question really really smart people all the time which is i mean also why we do this podcast because we could do the same thing every week um but basically we're forced to like read their content and consume their content and um i'm just able to learn so much from it i am not a i mean i read a lot of books and i do a lot on on the investment side of things but that's i didn't go to school for any of that but i do feel like i have an upper hand in this world and understanding macro because i have some

very high profile and very like people that are really into this that i can question and talk to you on a weekly basis and kind of understand what's going on and so that's actually why i'm going to start the the macro start this start off with the macro outlook um because i just i have some insight um and i've shared this before in an article i wrote back in may and just want to give an update as to that but yeah grateful every day to have such amazing clients i love it well before before you share the macro update what's the web 3 word of the week guy the word of the week this week is opportunity uh and i say opportunity because if you've been in this space at all for the last however long there's just

so much opportunity it's it's crazy like there's so much opportunity for work there's so much opportunity for experience and to learn and to like build revolutionary products and services like it's just such a like uh um a ground that's just so ripe for anything and everything right now right like it's it's pretty amazing to see um and so i just think there's so much opportunity in here and i think we're just at a place um in web 3 and in this this whole kind of tech revolution where you couldn't be in the more perfect place right now it can be better timing to invest to get involved to join a dow to do to start a business to do all these things um i just think we're you know we're reaching

this sort of inflection point and if you're in now like the opportunity you have is just amazing amend opportunity jump on it get it well let's talk about the opportunity in the the macro the macro markets what's what's the opportunity ahead this is not investment advice yeah this is not investment advice uh whatsoever uh but i just want to read out the first tweet here this is what kind of spiked me to do this i thought was hilarious packy mccormick who's a legend in the web 3 world he just tweets out yesterday just need the fed to raise rates 75 basis points uh 10 or 11 more times and we'll be back to break even what he's saying here is yesterday the fed raised rates you know interest rates 75 basis

points and we pumped which doesn't make a lot of sense and i just the reason i wanted this update is there's so many people on twitter and just in this industry that are so confused like what is going on interest rates going up is supposed to be bad that's why we started going down in the first place right so there's just there's a lot of questions and i think it it just warrants a little bit of discussion here let's go to the article that i wrote back in may so i attempted to explain what is happening slash what is going to potentially happen in the future back in may and this was titled crypto bear market what does this mean for the web3 ecosystem uh if you want to scroll down basically the point of this article was to say look crypto is not the problem

the problem is actually what's happening in the macro environment right um because um we had inflation uh going to highs higher than you know what we've seen in the last 40 years back in may still is today we had interest rates rising uh in the us dollar rising those were kind of the reasons of why all assets not just crypto um were going down and so now all of a sudden we still have interest rates rising i mean inflation the last time we saw was 9.1 uh the us dollar is is super high still yet we're starting to see green in the markets like how does that make any sense um and i actually called in this article i said by the end of july end of june july i think is when we'll start to see the markets begin to heal

and that's actually what we're seeing right now and i think a lot of people are just confused as to why that is and i just want to kind of explain um what i learned in terms of macro so um we're in a macro world we are not in a world where it matters what happens in crypto right it's it's what's happening in the macro world right now and basically what people need to understand is there's these things called a business cycle so the macro people they get these business cycles and it's i don't want to say easy to invest but it gives you so much insight when you understand a business cycle essentially what's happening is you have the fed right this is why we're all wondering what the fed's doing are we going to raise rates whatever the fed is there and they have like two mandates

it's to keep inflation low and to keep um unemployment low as well and they have two ways that they can do anything about this that's printing money uh or not printing money or raising rates or lowering rates and basically all that is like when you print more money there's just more money there's more liquidity in the system right and so asset prices go up because there's a lot more money out there when they stop printing there's less money out there things are less liquid prices typically go down interest rates go up means it's more expensive to access money or to access capital for businesses i mean if you are a house owner right now you're probably getting just crushed because your mortgage is going up uh yes i am exactly and because most people are on a variable mortgage rate and then when

interest rates go down your loans uh are cheaper and it's much easier to get money right so it's very easy to understand that when interest rates are low and they're printing money assets are going to go up there's just a lot of money out there right and this is the business cycle basically what happens is every x amount of years you know you get an expansion of the the balance sheet meaning there's lots of money out there whether that's because interest rates are low or because they're printing a bunch of money and if you see this chart here that we have it's basically this like it goes up and then it goes down it goes up and it goes down and that's just expansion so we print a bunch of money and then it peaks and then we have recession right which is basically a contraction where we make

it money more expensive essentially and that then it goes down into a recession and then we have to force to print money again and we just keep going but the trend is always going up and that's why if you look at like a zoomed out version of the stock market it's just up and up and up for you know 100 years but if you kind of zoom in on them it's up and down the whole time based off these business cycles and so what's actually happening right now is these business cycles are happening much much faster than we've ever seen and it's always kind of done it this way is where they get faster and they get faster and they get faster because they get more exaggerated we have to print way more uh which means we have to like restrict much quicker and so you kind of

see the cycles really really speeding up and that's the confusing thing for most people but where we're at right now is if you look at inflation which is the first one we talked about um if you look at the things that drive inflation like commodity prices so our food and things like that and then you look at oil those are all going down they are all going down significantly yet it didn't show in the inflation numbers that the fed showed last month whatever it is the next one i think is august 10th but most and that's because it's a lagging indicator so what most macro people like the job of a macro person is to look at what is the fed going to do right and so macro people are looking 18 months in advance right and then retail people are reacting to things that are

happening right now we're like oh my god inflation is high right now i'm selling everything right whereas macro people like oh i knew inflation was going to be high 10 months ago so they're already positioned right and then the markets are somewhere in between they are future they're forward indicators but they're somewhere in between retail and these like kind of macro people slash the fed and so inflation we're already seeing is probably going to start coming down in the numbers whether it's the next one or the one after that um if it's the next one that's really really good if not whatever that's fine um and then we have interest rates are still going up but again this is what the what the fed is doing right now what you need to understand is what is the fed going to do next month or the month

after that or for the next six months and so on and so forth it's kind of you got to look further out the um the the line here and so the timeline exactly and so basically what i wrote in that article was like look they're going to raise rates for a while but by june july somewhere they're going to change their tune because they can't just keep raising rates because if you are a house owner and your your gas is now you know 3x what it used to be your mortgage rate is going up crazy like they can't break the system if they do that the entire country of the us falls apart which means the whole world falls apart they just can't do it that's what i explained that article so it's like yes they will push the limits until the seam starts to pop like your buttons

start to pop off and then they're gonna change tune and so what we're waiting for is when does the fed start to change and go bring the rates down and even though they just went up again one more time why did the markets go green it's because they started to give the idea that they're about to start changing so again we're not looking at what they did today we're looking at what are they going to do next time and what they said was this is finally they started to say we don't know where we'll go next time we might not keep raising right and actually raul had a tweet here raul paul where he basically said what they said is there's no clear guidance going forward um it's going to be a meeting by meeting thing it's data dependent right we're going to be nimble

which means okay we're about to start changing our tune and we're going to go back down now probably they'll pause first and wait but then eventually they'll go back down kind of thing so because of that reaction is why the markets are starting to go oh it's changing now it's coming they're going to start having to lower rates and eventually and probably a little bit longer they're going to have to print money and the reason is because a recession is coming right so in the inflation story's over right we don't know that yet but you will you'll see it in the numbers soon enough most likely and that's not a certainty i just want to say that but it seems like that's where it's going but the big thing here is what's happening is we're about to go into a recession i think china's already there

europe i think is already there or close to and the u.s is like free-falling it's like fast because they've raised rates and they've done all this so fast and most people think well recession that's got to be a really bad thing for markets right and really what the answer is no it's actually a really bullish thing for markets because recession means that growth has collapsed which you'd think would be really bad but what that means is when you go into a recession what does the fed do they lower rates and they print money so again we're thinking six months 12 months ahead what's going to happen here and the way that you typically see this happen is there is a spectrum on the risk of different assets crypto is the farthest end it is the the most risky you're gonna get and then you

have like growth tech stocks like meta and whatever right and then you have things like the s p 500 and then you have you know whatever gold and bonds and all that kind of stuff but the the riskier you get they are the leading indicator the fastest horse in the race so in november when the fed started to change tune what moved first crypto it just tanked it went faster than everything and then growth stocks went and then the s p 500 and then bonds and so on and so forth right and so the moment that we go oh we're going to hit recession or growth is going to collapse or whatever you're looking at what's the thing that's going to move first well that's crypto and that's what's happening right now the market is starting to see that the fed is changing tune and so they're

starting to deploy right and then you'll start to see um gross stocks will do the same now there may be a drop down when the recession is announced and blah blah because that's retail right getting scared and reacting but those who are kind of in the know that understand these business cycles they're way ahead they're already deploying they're already kind of doing this and so really the reason i wanted to explain this is it looks like the macro environment is clearing up now in the news that will not be the case we will say recession and they will say growth is collapsing that looks bad but at the same time you're going to see markets start to go green and that is a confusing thing but that's because people are just ahead of what's actually going on in the news and ahead of retail and i just want people

to understand that because um one position yourself however you want this is not financial advice but i think what this means is when we what we know is that when the fed starts to lower rates and starts to print money we have another one of these sort of like super cycles where there's a lot of growth in the industry investment comes in token prices go up and this happens in not just crypto this is everything right and this is always a really good indicator that we're gonna get new projects and all these new things are going to happen and new users are going to flood in they just want to make sure people are positioning themselves and thinking about it like hey we're going to have another win and i don't know if it's in one month or if it's in six months whatever but it is coming and

that means we're going to have another go at this just like we did back in 2021 and 2020. and that's crazy but i want everyone to be prepared because i think most people believe that is going to happen now the other thing to understand on macros it's not a certainty business cycles are not a certain i mean they are certainly going to happen but the timing is not and so yeah that's just the probability that it's going to happen it's likely going to happen sooner than most think although it is not a certainty so we will see where things go definitely things could get way worse and everything could implode that's going to happen at some point the assumption is it's probably not going to happen here but i think there's going to be a lot of opportunity for the space coming sooner than we think

especially with the merge coming which we're not going to talk much about today but i think we will next week um so i just think there's a lot of opportunity and i want to make people sure people understand what this all means does that help jay what do you think that was yeah i'm i'm i'm listening and learning help me [Laughter] this is again just the information that i get from big time macro people that are basically helping hedge funds and helping you know sovereign wealth funds et cetera they're telling them how to move and control their money um so again could be completely wrong but he has been calling or they sorry have been calling because it's multiple people everything that's been happening over the last like couple years and it's been

very interesting to watch and follow along i am curious uh to know if our listeners value this we don't usually do market talk uh like this so uh if you like if you like this this section that's talking about this tweet at us send us a message let us know would love to love to know if you guys enjoy hearing more of market talks not that we're going to start doing a crazy amount of market talks by any means but i'm just curious if it was valuable to others all right let's uh on onwards oh kai do you want to do some push-ups what are you going to do okay okay i'll do push-ups i'm not doing 45 in a row though that's too much how many how are you gonna do and like am i just gonna sit here and watch you or can

i just start talking about the next thing i think we gotta get you gotta play some music while i do this but i don't know let me uh let me this one's for rebel i'm gonna bang out twenty maybe twenty five yeah you could unblur your screen otherwise i'm not gonna see you there you go okay yeah and move the mic okay kyle is uh in a what looks like a prison cell of a bedroom right now and uh he's he's down in push-up position one two three four five great form six seven eight he's looking strong nine ten little red eleven twelve thirteen fourteen very strong fifteen sixteen damn impressed seventeen eighteen nineteen twenty twenty wow 22

23 slowing down 24 25 26 oh boy he's got energy 27 28 29 30 31 oh my gosh 32. and [Laughter] all right next up the open metaverse alliance uh was announced this week so basically multiple virtual worlds have come together

to solve key challenges uh of the metaverse and preserve the freedom of information owned by users uh you can check out the openmetaverse alliance at oama3.org uh essentially let's see who came into this we have alien worlds uh n animaka brands dapper labs decentraland decentral games m2verse space metaverse super world apps the sandbox uh upland me crypto voxels and vivi i don't know that one so a group came together to to really to create standards for this it's funny this announcement came

um after i saw a tweet um right before so i don't know if this uh kai this is from uh kai turner i believe is his name he said stop building metaverses start building interoperable standards and i heard an interesting take on this which was this was right after other side had just like launched their metaverse and everybody's talking about like my metaverse right other side's metaverse or yugolabs metaverse or this metaverse over here like these proprietary metaverses the thing we have to remember is like that's missing the whole point of the metaverse great explanation i heard was those are basically all mini verses right so what we should do is we should stop calling

those meta verses and we should start calling those mini verses because the metaverse there will only be one metaverse if we get this right assuming we get this right and we do this the way that we all envision it interoperable and composable there will only be one metaverse right now there might be many many verses which will be games and things that are off to the side there will actually be hundreds thousands just like we have one internet but we have many websites and things like that on the internet yes exactly exactly and so you're reading the better book right jay yeah yeah i'm bringing it yeah yeah i'm reading have you started it yeah yeah well this morning i was reading and it

started talking about this but for the internet um so this is really interesting if you want to finish up what you were going to say i'll talk about in a second but yeah basically all i was going to say was that we need to focus on standards right now interoperable standards so that when we are building we're not what is happening right now is everybody is trying to build the metaverse and then they're trying to say hey everybody else come over and build on top of mine right you know uglabs wants to build the other side and then they want everyone else in the world to expand their metaverse but that's not the way this works the way this works is we create interoperable standards that

permissionlessly allow anybody to build in a open metaverse right om which is uh punk6529's metaverse seems to be one that is is is doing this uh and they're actually not mentioned uh as a part of this um it's a bit funny to me but um so yeah so we'll see where this goes but i think it's it's important to think about this mini verse first metaverse uh distinction so it was just cool uh matthew ball from metaverse was the the book that he wrote and he um was just talking about when the internet was built there was um there was it was xfinity and i think verizon that were basically trying to to create their own internet um that was sort of close walled and he's like

imagine that but there was a bunch of people that fought for open protocols and um kept it and had these sort of like interoperable standards but he's like imagine that didn't happen he's like you would go on a browser for example let's say you created a website on the verizon internet or whatever browser you wouldn't be able to use that in the google chrome browser like right now we can go in any browser we can see any website he's like that wouldn't have been able to be done if they did it the other way they didn't have these open standards he's also like imagine you went to do like call someone or text someone he's like verizon uh like if you want to use zoom for example verizon could charge you like x amount if you did it within the us and then it would

be like way more if you did it outside of the us because that's not their jurisdiction so like they would have to connect with other internets and allow you to talk with people outside of their domain kind of thing and he's like what a piece of [ __ ] it would be if that was the case right um so these these interoperable like standards these open standards are so important um and so it's funny that it comes back around to the metaverse as well we need it there too yeah next step yeah legal structures for dallas this is a um a uh article that was shared on our discord i believe it was from uh chris is his name uh yeah c-r-i-z-z um so this is just an interesting take since we're starting in dao i wanted to read this and kind of

see what's going on we also have some blockchain lawyers coming on the podcast that we're interviewing tomorrow um and uh so it would be interesting to learn more about this but basically it was just talking about how um how dows need to form legal structures and it's really kind of a gray area right now for the most part um but he broke down i think it was like the five or six you want to scroll down there's like five or six yeah five different options so there's you don't set up an entity at all you just launch token and form a dao and basically the problem here is that there's liability if you start to do things the people in the dow are now liable um it's not liable through like a corporation or something you have tax burdens because there is no tax structure so just depending on for the

people i guess it's just taxes to them um and then it's harder to like sign contracts and like deal with real big businesses in the real world because if you don't have an entity there's no way to like sign a contract and stuff so you're sort of left in the dark there the next option and this is i guess if your members are from the u.s so the majority are but is a us-based llc um and you can do this in like wyoming and things like that you want to keep scrolling down jay um to the u.s based one yeah um actually uh you can go back up to the five i'll just i'll hit each real quick so there's us base which is basically just get an llc and you work just like a company essentially um and that's if most your members in the us then you have an

offshore foundation um which is uh basically like a not-for-profit uh you can you can um put your dow under then you have an onshore foundation which i believe is just in the us an onshore foundation um and then you have a combination he's like you can also do both so you can have a not-for-profit that does some of the things and then you can have the llc that does some of the other things um and he says that's more normal for the bigger dows that's kind of the route they're taking um now where this all goes you don't really know it's like we're trying to fit this like new primitive this whole new idea into a box that was you know made many many years ago so like hopefully we just end up forming something completely different because one of the beautiful things

about a down we just did it is like you can just have a big community from all over the world and you can just launch a token and away you go you can start right um and this is just like just adds this extra layer of just kind of honestly [ __ ] that you have to do um and so right now it's kind of a grayer we'll see what happens with it i'm interested to talk to these lawyers about it on our podcast um so we'll see maybe i would bet they could come and make up their own thing for what you know a dow is instead of us having to fit into an llc or not not-for-profit but um let's see kind of where that goes yeah we've got as kai mentioned we have uh two lawyers coming on the podcast tomorrow we're filming but it won't be

coming out for a few weeks uh but yeah i think the the the takeaway here is the dow legal structure is very convoluted right now uh i've had multiple conversations uh chris who shared this article in our community i had a long conversation with him he is he has a llc he also has a dow and he has raised funds and when you get into investors and investors own part of the dow like that gets even more complex you have to figure out the legal structure so yeah i don't i certainly am no no expert on this and don't have the answers uh but uh if you are starting a dow or if you are trying to figure out the legal structure of your doubt come into our community because there is a bunch of

people talking about this and trying to figure this out right now i think the big thing to understand is like once you want to interact if once you want this down to interact with the real world that's when you need to think about this kind of stuff if it's all kept down to dao or like in in the web 3 smaller community like you're you're probably fine for the foreseeable future because it is a gray area at the moment yeah it's when you want to interact with the real world uh that's when things become a little bit difficult and you've got to figure this stuff out but why would we ever want to interact with the real world you know we can just live in our what did you call them miniverses just live in our mini verses not never touch real grass no thanks

speaking of physical real things what's this so lana has opened a store in new york solana spaces they are called uh got us some photos up here it looks like an apple store very futuristic very modern uh a lot of a lot of media attention on this a lot of reaction to this um pretty simple it's a store where you can onboard to crypto you can set up your first crypto wallet uh you can purchase your first crypto um it's a way for them to to get in front of people that they're not getting in front of right now by being iro and being in retail

i don't know if this connects to their mobile play as well and if they're trying to push more into selling hardware in the long term which obviously would make very a lot of sense with a retail location but even if this is just a pop-up like even if this is just there them putting this there for the next three months or something like that they're going to get a ton of attention from this and they're going to onboard a lot of users because you walk by a cool looking store like this like you're going to go in and check it out and see what's going on another thing i loved is that in the store they have all of these um screens up on on the wall and they're clearly doing like nft partnership events so i saw like a bunch of nft communities there separately and all of

their nfts were up on the wall and so like it's yeah it's i i mean i think it's great it's great for onboarding uh it's gonna bring a lot of attention to not just solana to crypto in general yeah i see it's like apple tesla does this as well like tesla doesn't need a store for what they do right they can just do it the the way that they were previously before they start opening stores and people just order them they have enough demand but it's a nice experience right it kind of because tesla's a hard thing to understand once you sit in a tesla you're like whoa this is way different than any other car i've ever been in which is similar to web3 right like once you use a wallet you interact with let's say uniswap you're like whoa this is way different than

like you know getting into my bank or using whatever um so i think maybe it's the same thing which would be really cool i like it yeah it's nice yeah for those in new york you can check out the store it's in at hudson yards in new york next up unstoppable domains is the next crypto nft web 3 unicorn they did another fundraising round which is now valued them at 1 billion 1 billion with a b uh we got another unicorn on the on the coming out of the blockchain world which is super exciting um we had nft domains on the podcast what

like two months ago uh [Music] i'm sorry um on podcast a while ago uh i own i own a couple unstoppable domains i'm sure you do as well kai uh this is the this is this is all about the identity space right their their business that is focused on using domains to enable users to build online identity and digital identity which is a huge part of web3 that is really just in like i don't even it's not even in the first inning like it's like pre-game right now it's so early in the way that we are going to build our identities online but when you think about it the same way you have your

phone number and you have your your mailing address and you have your email um you know your dot nft or your dot x or your dot ens uh sorry your documents from ens which is not unstoppable domains that's ens uh is is going to be your digital identity i mean it's it's super obvious that this is the way it's going to go like websites were the same it used to be i think like an ip address or something that you had to put in there's a bunch of random numbers and then we created dns and everyone's like oh way better to like find websites of course we're going to use that same thing you guys there's a lot of people are like oh crypto's stupid you got to use this 0x blah blah blah it's like 20 digit number and it's like the internet was the same thing before and you don't

think the internet's stupid you use it but you just need to create the tools and this is another tool that just takes it basically it's a layer on top of blockchain so you don't have to think about these stupid numbers instead you can just send me eth to kylereadhead.eth please feel free to do it and it's super simple but i couldn't tell you on this podcast to send it to ox blah blah blah i don't even know what it is i have to go like search and find my wallet so it's just a better ux experience and that's what unstoppable domains is is really leading to charging super sick oh no big fan bullet shown unstoppable chipotle chipotle is offering two hundred thousand dollars in free crypto uh they're also offering what one cent guac

in one cent queso blanco nice white cheese uh by the dip eat the dip is their campaign which is absolutely hilarious uh i mean not much more to say other than chipotle you're amazing you guys are hilarious uh i think they also put chipotle ever put bitcoin on their balance sheet i remember when things were popping off back in like 2020 2021 chipotle was doing something i can't remember what it was but anyway yeah i think they put bitcoin on their balance sheet and i think they also started allowing crypto payments in some other stores okay yeah okay so they're they're going the direction they're making moves you know what's funny there's so in canada there is it's not chipotle but it's a it's a shawarma place what's it called

they're really big on twitter because they put bitcoin on their balance sheet like really really early on i forget their name i feel really bad here anyway i had never been to one i never heard of it but i think it's just in canada but when i was home in the summer i was driving by there's one right by my parents house and so i stopped in and uh and i got one there and uh and so like their marketing campaign which is basically what it was like they don't have a big balance sheet they're not a big company um it worked you know it got me two years later so it was awesome i tried to remember was it osmo's no wasn't that i don't know anyway way to go chipotle we'd love to see it uh okay here's the story for you i'm gonna try to give you the tl dr on

this uh but basically there is a a dumpster diving quest right now to find 181 million dollars in bitcoin that is believed to be buried in a dump so crazy james ho ho wells how wells james how else uh is a bitcoin miner been bit bitcoin money for a long time and he i think this happened like 10 years ago i don't remember exactly when this happened but he lost one of his hard drives which had 8 000 bitcoin on it and

when he lost that oh nine nine years ago so i i don't exactly know what happened nine years ago he lost it i'm sure he freaked out and tried to find it forever and then never found it then gave up but for some reason he has decided to reignite his plan um maybe i don't i maybe he somehow figured out where he roughly thinks it is but basically let me take you through um i've got a i've got some uh notes on it here on my other screen oh no the restaurant is tahini's i looked it up tahini's uh so basically you're doing this i'm going to do the rest of my push-ups okay i got 13 more to go do do the rest of your push-ups so essentially what he's done is he's created a business kyle's currently

doing push-ups we're getting one there's one i'm gonna stop counting so he's created a business and raised investment where the business's sole objective is to find this hard drive with eight thousand bitcoin in order to do this he has two he's they figured out the dump that it's in he has two dogs that kyle has now done his uh his workshops well done that was very quick um he has two dogs that are at this dump and they serve two purposes one is they um go around the dump trying to uh like sniff around now obviously they can't smell hard drives so i'm not you know actually i think they're robotic dogs i think that's what they are and then they

also are um they're like security because he's now now everyone knows where this that's at this dump so he's got security then he has um his ai technology that that basically goes through i think the a technology is connected to the dogs they can go through the garbage and detect things that might be the hard drive and then once they detect it they pull it out and then he has a team of eight uh i don't know if you call them scientists eight people that go through all of the garbage that's pulled out that has is suspected to maybe have the bitcoin in it uh

and if they find this bitcoin here's what happens this money so it's 181 million at current prices if they find it 30 goes back to james 30 goes to the the team that's trying to look for this 30 goes to the investors and then 10 goes to his community his town he's going to give 10 percent of this which would be like 18 million dollars to he lives in wales to his small town in wales he's going to donate 10 so uh good luck james i hope you find your bitcoin if not that's i feel like he's wasting a lot of money here to do this but uh tell me all right next news and you know every

week i feel like we're announcing something that's being built on polygon well here's another one and this one's mercedes-benz is the latest to be powered by polygon um basically what mercedes-benz is doing is they're building like a data marketplace on top of uh polygon and ethereum actually it's both and similar to ocean protocol i guess there's a lot of um which is basically like a a marketplace that you you tokenize um and then you can have people that's in your industry like buy and sell data from different companies uh you do it on the blockchain for transparency um and um i guess in self-driving cars there's a lot of data that's required for this that other people also want to use that's basically

the use case here and what they're building um how far along they are i have no idea um is this going to be successful i have no idea but cool it's a big name big name reddit has launched a official nft playbook reddit partnered with vayner to create a basically it's an e-book of i would say it's like it's it's part how to launch an nft but it's also part like what the [ __ ] is an nft and like understanding them so it's a beginner's guide to nfts and uh it's it's their lead magnet for their nft marketplace shout out to web 2 marketing tactics still being used and still happening of

course all that's still going to be involved i like that you switched to vayner 3 instead of it says vayner nft there but you were okay let's get into nft utility nfts nfts nfts so this is that was weird uh this is uh a nice quick threat that came out we talk about ticketing all the time and so when i saw this start i was like oh this is the perfect opportunity to kind of explain some of the benefits of nft ticketing and there's actually a use case at ecc that just happened that i want to talk about real quick so um here's a quick thread i think there's four things that um nft access explains here in this thread so um what are the kind of benefits of nft tickets versus normal tickets like do we

really need them right so here's the advantages one it prevents fraud blockchains are a trusted decentralized source for authentication purchasing tickets on the resale market people often can't separate authentic tickets from fake ones nft ticketing allows us to verify the authenticity this one's huge right like um this is this just in itself makes it good enough like this is perfect right because when you want to go buy a ticket on i don't know on um like facebook marketplace or something you don't know if it's a real ticket right maybe they just duplicated it and are sending it over right because oft times just a pdf with a qr code so um that's huge of course like they're actually going to send it to you we don't need a third party to do that um so that's huge lower fees and markup control on major ticketing platforms the

fees can cost up to 30 to 40 percent of the tickets face value that's crazy nfc ticketing platform fees are minimal in comparison and gives creators more options to control resale and markups via usage of smart contracts so that's really cool more revenue for creators this is also an obvious one and a big one i think the nfts unlock which is creators usually have no benefit from the resale of their tickets and the cost associated with issuing tickets is high nfts tickets brings more revenue to artists creatives and event hosts in the form of royalties from every sale so like what often happens is you launch a for your concert or your game whatever tickets are like let's say 80 bucks and then they go out on secondary market and it's the scalpers selling like a large percent of all these tickets for like

hundreds or thousands of dollars and the the um the artist or the creator is making just whatever they made on that you know 50 bucks or 80 bucks for the initial was and they make nothing off those resales um so now you can put a royalty on it and now you can make now scalpers go do whatever they want if anything you probably want to help the scalpers go out and stuff you know um because now you're gonna just make more so it's a great opportunity i think and then reusable um tickets have always been single use now this is less of a problem i don't know how many people actually have like i mean there are still print tickets everywhere um but i mean we don't need web3 for this necessarily this is the one thing that i would say is there's a lot of there's a lot of things that

happen in web3 that aren't necessarily needed you can just do them digitally in web too but nfts nfc tickets live forever on the blockchain and always in possession of the attendee this gives creators the opportunity to reward fans and reuse these entities in the future i guess that part is cool um because you could always go back and go who were the people that attended that one event and you don't need to worry about people changing their emails or like you know if it was all just um paper tickets like someone's got to try to prove that they went to this concert like 10 years ago and find this paper ticket they left a shoebox like no way so the blockchain is a great unlock for that so unlocked protocol is um is a platform that we've actually used a protocol story that we've used we had

them in the podcast many many months ago um really really cool what they're building basically they're building a platform where you can gate access and do memberships and things empties there's a lot of different utility around nfts and we use them for our proof of completion uh nft for the radical course that we created if you have not taken that yet go do it it'll get you fully up to speed on web 3 and where the space is going and then you can mint your own nft which is done through unlock protocol but what unlock protocol did is they partnered with ecc last week in paris they had the largest i guess the largest uh conference in europe um for for blockchain and ethereum for ethereum yeah which is the

biggest of all the other ones right so uh basically what they did is they wanted to have a cool experience where it was actually nfts rather than like your normal ticketing process and so it was thousands of people that they had to do this for weren't really sure if they were going to have the right ux for it if it makes sense like we're not really there thankfully anyone going to ecc probably already has a wallet and you know has probably used an nft before um but basically what they did is unlock protocol built in a bunch of new features um and they allowed for there was different levels like tiers of these tickets depending on who you were if you're a speaker if you're a sponsor you get a different badge and so there was a different nft that you could buy um they

did the basically they sold them at certain times they sold it really quick the the user experience was really good to buy the nfts went directly into your wallet they made it where they didn't want reselling they wanted only people that bought are the ones that that get it and so unlock protocol could do that so that's one feature that you you can't really get in web 2 i guess um is that sort of like the the soul bound nft essentially is what it was they didn't want any reselling though i think that's one of the best unlocks of mentees so i found that kind of weird but whatever is what it's like what if you couldn't go it'd be nice to be able to sell my and give my ticket to someone else you know anyway this is what they want to do but they also wanted the

check-in process to be with these tickets um so basically what they did is that the nft actually gave you a qr code um and and so basically you had to use this qr code which was like essentially attached to the nft and that was the way that you would scan and you could get in so it made for kind of a seamless process getting into the conference um because they just scanned his qr code the way they did it was kind of weird but it was like the qr code sent an nf or sorry once you got the nft it sent a qr code to your email and then you just had to pull up that email um so like it was basically they did it like the web 2 model because like i could technically just forward that email to anyone that could use that qr

code so like they kind of lost in my opinion anyway it's just kind of weird the way they did it um but i think it's just the only way that they the ux really works in this in this um industry right now um because like technically someone could hack into my email and then like go and use that ticket and then when i get up there i don't know that right so i go use my code and it doesn't work so that's the way it's a weird thing the way to do that is they clearly don't have that next uh app developed unlocked doesn't but like tokenproof which is an app that does this which was used a lot at events at nftnyc does it basically connects to your wallet and proves that you have that entity and

then gives you a qr code in your in your app but the way that they get around like you can't share that qr code is it's a it's a constantly changing qr code so if if you screenshot it and send it to somebody um you would have to like immediate they would have to immediately use it would be the only way it would work right oh cool so i mean that's the idea it's like look they did it they proved that they could have thousands of people using nft and not really have any issues i guess it was like most people like yeah it was pretty seamless um but we're still going to make improvements and it's going to get even better and better like the example you just gave so super cool great job unlocked and great job great job online okay next up damian hurst uh who is

a very famous artist uh he's in his 50s very you know top leading artist in the world uh i think he's the like i think his artwork is the he's the most value valued artist in the uk that's alive uh he's sold pieces of work for over a hundred million dollars so og top artist he wanted to get into nfts so a year ago he released a nft project called the currency okay fast forward a year later as of yesterday if you owned one of the nfts there was 10 nft 10 000 nfts if you owned one you had until yesterday to decide if you

wanted to keep your nft or burn your nft and get a physical version of your nft the exact same uh exact same picture basically but in a physical version um and this led to a lot of questions uh and kai i'm curious to know which way would you go would you would you keep the nft or would you want the physical and keep in mind that the physical is a damien hearst which like is worth you know potentially worth huge sums of money like very there would be no way these were these were like as of yesterday before the the end half the close happened

they were going for about like i think six or seven eighth so that's uh what like fifteen thousand dollars um or sorry i'm doing canadian again uh so that's about twelve thousand ten to twelve thousand dollars i mean i i'm the wrong person to ask because one i'm not super into art i do like some art but i'm not big into it but i also don't have a home right i'm nomadic so like what am i gonna do with this art so uh but i mean i would i would probably get the physical thing i'd leave it at like a friend's house or something until i buy myself a home but like when i do that yeah i would definitely want it um i think it's a super interesting question because

i think i would do the nft because mainly i don't even though i have a house i don't want to deal with a physical version right the problem with physical art is um it can get damaged and if it gets it's damaged you're [ __ ] right so would you put it like a screen up on your wall and display it exactly exactly okay interesting yeah which is where i think we're going right like i think 10 years from now we're gonna see a huge drop and not a huge drop in physical art physical art will always be a you know a store of value and collector item but i think that nfts on the art side i mean there's already

a lot of people are calling this the summer of generative art art blocks projects are all minting out and just flying while we're in a bear market so yeah i think i i want to say i agree with you the only thing that i now don't i'm just realizing i didn't think of this before it's like i don't like screens there's a certain time in the night where you don't want screens after sunset it's really bad for you it's bad for cicada rhythm um it is one of the reasons why we struggle with obesity and addiction and a lot of the problems that we have is because we completely [ __ ] up our cicada rhythm which is because we no longer live um by the sun that's what we're supposed to do as humans and now if you have screens like the tv's bad enough everyone's on

tvs and computers and phones and now everything on your wall is a damn screen too like jeez i don't know this seems bad this seems bad but i kind of want it too so i don't know i'm torn yeah yeah well it'll be interesting to see how this plays out over the next 10 years right is which will become more it's a it's a great experiment 100 are going to go more in the in the row of screens that's what it's always done right but which one will become more valuable is what i'm saying right like you know you had this option to decide it ended up being 55 149 wanted the physical and 4 851 kept the nft so almost 50 50 split

which is crazy now in 10 years i bet you it's 90 10. i would like because here's the thing which one's even more valuable 100 it's the nft it's the digital thing because how many people see your artwork how many people see your artwork uh right now how many people come to your house in a year let's say you know whatever 50 people whatever online though you have millions of people that can see your art so what's going to be more valuable easily that like there's just no question so yeah very interesting so shout out damian hurst thanks for doing that experiment um i'm going to skip a few things because we are way over time and i need to get on a flight web 3 subscriptions so this is a quick hitter so mirror is like a um basically a place uh for you to write

blogs or articles and they form an nft and so people can um people can basically buy uh and collect your your articles which is really really cool the one thing they didn't have was a way to communicate with those people right so like sub stack and ghost and these other ones where you write an article and people can subscribe to your articles and then they get an email as soon as you publish and so now you have a means for people to actually see your content whereas on mirror you would write your content and then it's like hopefully it gets picked up by seo but that takes a long time or you probably just go share it on social right um but the beautiful thing of a newsletter is like you everyone sees it and gets in their inbox immediately well now mirror has finally launched that and

so you can subscribe to publications on mirror and you can receive email updates on the new content so mirror is now like a newsletter platform that also turns your articles into an nft and you can launch tokens on it um mirrors doing some really really cool things and they needed that communication tool which all of web3 does and they elected to go with email and i love it the ones and twos let's talk about the blockchain what's going on with the ones and twos yeah this is just a quick update i'm not going to go through each one but vitalik was at ecc and he did his um famous you want to just click on the picture there um jay it might be easier but so he did his famous um breakdown of the ethereum road map um

and so we all know about the merge that's coming and i'm going to dive deeper into that next week actually we'll talk a little bit about the merge and what that means um but there's actually a bunch of things all happening and being built right now there's the merge the surge the verge the purge and the i can't see what that is splurge splurge that's what it is yeah yeah beautiful naming good job italic basically these are all different components of ethereum the blockchain that are all currently being built out at once from different groups and different contributors um which is really really cool to see that there's all these different upgrades all being built and it's not phase one phase two phase three they're all being built in tandem and they will all launch throughout as we go um but it's

interesting that right now only about 40 percent of ethereum's roadmap is completed so we still have 60 of the way to go right this thing is already you know um uh already has billions of you know dollars worth of transactions and it's settling billions of dollars you know per day um and it's only forty percent of the way built so you know what we think of web3 now what we think of ethereum now and kind of where the space is going is not even close to where it's actually going to be uh we've still got more than half the way to go in the full sort of build of what ethereum promises to to be um and that my friends is really freaking cool yeah we're so early it's such a a

reminder of how early or we don't even know what this technology is capable of yet or what it's going to do for us well this is another layer of what we just talked about of like the internet and how we those need to be open protocols etc then there's the metaverse the same and ethereum is one of the like foundations of the sort of um the uh consensus and the like financial aspect of it all right um and so it's another open protocol that is uh a part of the internet and so you're gonna have these sort of three big mechanisms that all are allowing different things to happen and they're all open and transparent et cetera and it's really cool yeah now at the end of this the theory of metallic is saying that ethereum will be able to settle

was a hundred thousand transactions per second uh which would be incredible now to be clear on that that's just ethereum that is ethereum the layer one the ethereum with its combination of layer twos is millions and millions and millions of transactions per second so this is again whenever i talk about scalability 100 000 per second is actually not a lot like visa still beats that i believe so like that's not unlocked to the world that's actually not that good um and that's like what a lot of the layer ones are saying oh well we can do a hundred thousand now it's like no one cares about a hundred thousand we don't succeed in web three if you have 100 000 transactions per second we succeed when we have millions of transactions per second because that's what this requires

so that's just the base layer can do that and that's fully decentralized maximally decentralized then you have layer twos and we go to the millions and tens of millions september 19th the merge let's hope it happens then that's that's the current date watch out for it aptos we've got an uh another layer one jumping into the into the game aptos has announced a 150 million series a funding round uh and this was started by uh a couple of the um a couple of the people who left facebook uh from um was it novi and uh demi

dm damn um so that was their like old crypto token that they're gonna make and then novi was their old wallet both those got shut down and so the leader many some of the leaders from those projects um started building taking the technology there and started building aptos and yeah they got a big funding from big players ftx jump a160 multi-coin um yeah all the big players okay web 3 community updates big things happening in the web3 academy i think i just said web3 community website academy community lots of exciting stuff coming out of our community if you're not already in our discord you should join because you'll be joining 785 members this community is not about quantity it is about quality uh 785 is

pretty we're pretty stoked on that number we're not trying to get a 10 000 person community we're trying to get a badass engaged community um and what's been going on recently we've rebuilt our onboarding sequence for new new community members to make it easier to understand discord and the many ways to benefit from a community man it can be so confusing joining a new discord it's overwhelming and you can totally get lost and we don't want that experience we want you to feel a sense of belonging and a sense of meaning and a sense that you are part of something and so in order to do that we're now starting to offer one-on-one calls to all new community members uh where we'll tell you about our community but we'll also talk about what do you want to achieve in web3 and what's the path to do so and we're happy

to you know i think about a lot of our community members are looking for jobs we're happy to help you down that path um we also have a new member info session that will be starting up next week uh which is a great way to network and meet others i think a big thing that a lot of people in web3 are looking for is they're looking for their tribe they're looking for their community looking for people that are you know if you're a dev you're looking for other devs that are learning web3 languages and experimenting with solidity and rust and there's a developer guild in our community where you can connect with those people uh and 70 of our community members speaking about what our community members are looking for 75 percent sorry 70 percent want to find a job in web 3.

so if you want to find a job in web 3 join our community because you'll be joining a whole bunch of other people who are looking for the same thing and we're constantly trying to develop resources to help you out with that you can listen to our podcast or read our article that went out about a week ago where we talk about the different ways to get a job in web 3 and the steps that you should take i also personally am offering one-on-one consults right now for anybody that wants help finding a job in web3 or figuring out their resume or you know should you have an off-chain resume should you have an on-chain resume feel free to drop me a line i will open up my calendar to you

and happy to support you in that journey we also have 57 members in the web 3 academy dao now which is super exciting to see that many people actively building and we have big news coming out next week about the dow so keep your eyes peeled and watch out for that kudos to everyone involved in the dao you 57 people rock absolutely okay some final takes so this is a cool one that i saw this is uh elliott's who's actually from coinvise which is a great tool by the way to mint tokens um and uh and do airdrops and all the different things that you need for

tokens we did it that's how we actually created our token for the dao but he tweeted and just said every company on earth will soon have a community so if you learn to copyright build narratives leverage web three on board people build relationships you become an immediate 10x asset for any company and i just thought that was a really cool take um those that are playing around in dao's right now um which we're seeing it happen in webster academy dao the things that we're all learning we're learning at a rapid speed on how to organize as a community how to use these different tools like poe apps and minting tokens and gating discords and uh and how to onboard people into the discord and get them associated in the community and do these events like it is so much and

all communities all companies are going to do this in the future because community is literally everything when it comes to digital um and so when you start to learn these things like it's such an unlock and you're gonna be able to get any job from any company in the future so kudos to all those specifically went through academy down but all dows that are playing in the sandbox and learning all these type of skills it's going to be huge in the coming years for you so here's a hot take for you this week a crypto punk sold for 3.3 million dollars uh which was just over 2500 eth uh

and the it was sold the reason one of the reasons why it's so valuable it was uh it's one of the one of the more rare crypto punks it's a uh it's an ape punk so very rare but it also is very valuable because uh it's it's being used by uh somebody as their twitter profile and as their name punk 4156 who is one of the founders of nouns dao and so it has it has a brand behind it beyond just being the punk itself um and after selling it punk 4156 um was a lot of people were saying like oh my

gosh like why did you sell your punk like sure 2500 east is is a lot but like your punk is so valuable don't you think the punk is more valuable long term and so here's what he says he says i think there are two main categories of owners one those with so much ease they're indifferent to spending 2500 on a punk and two those who don't understand how valuable 2500 east is going to be it's a good take so you know really good take because i think there is this belief that what is more valuable is the nft more valuable or is having the east more valuable and he's he's sort of saying he's saying he finds

himself in the bit of the middle uh because he's done very well for himself and he has a lot of ease so he definitely sounds like the founder of nouns dow is uh bullish on the merge that's very bullish on the merge but i mean 2500 eth that since it was at 3 million or something you said in east um and we're at lowe's uh and like i think what people don't understand is like you i'll get into it next week actually we're gonna get into the emergency let's see what else next week yeah yeah but interesting take what is more valuable and i think this is something that everybody should should always be thinking if you have nfts is like is the nft more valuable or is the east more valuable long term when you look at the potential of staking and getting yield from youth as

well as the long-term value potential increase in the price of ease talking a lot of markets here's a funny funny tweet for you uh so director of vibes seems to be a web three thing as someone who has a long enough career to remember webmasters rock stars and ninjas as titles trust me when i say get a real title [Laughter] i don't know like the one thing that is constantly in in the web3 academy community uh which is fun is like this dow is based it's built on vibes and it really is right it's a social community and so it's all about the vibes and so to make sure

i feel like jay your director of lives of impact digital marketing we don't definitely no doubt no doubt that uh there needs to be vibes right like there needs to be culture there needs to be there needs to be like a sense of belonging and that comes from um having vibes i can't think of a better word to use other than vibes i just think that the word vibes is so overused yeah and it also vibes when you're looking to fire when you're looking to fire during a bear market director of vibes is number one on the list for sure it works in bull markets doesn't work in bear markets oh that tweet was from uh kygani by the way on twitter kaigani you're putting out great stuff keep it

up uh okay our dow of the month give me a little drumroll our towel of the month is climadow and i'm not sure if it's climadou or klima dao uh so um why is it climadou because they are fighting climate change and they're doing it in a very interesting way essentially what climadow is doing is their mission is to increase the price of carbon offsets because if we increase the price of carbon offsets then

companies have to spend more and pay more attention to the carbon footprint they that they are causing so basically what climate dial is doing is they are they're sort of like it's like a d5 play except with carbon assets and carbon offsets uh which is fascinating a lot of people call this refi or regenerative finance which is we should actually probably do a podcast at some point on refi fascinating topic and a lot of really cool projects in the space of refi right and and brings a lot of attention to the fact that uh that crypto and web3 is not just about making money refi is about regenerating the world and

making the world a better place um so what climate dao is doing is they are buying carbon offsets and one of the problems is that carbon offsets aren't avail they're only available to like large businesses and so carbon offset for example would be like somebody goes and plants a million trees right that is a carbon offset to a carbon footprint that someone is causing so what what you can do is as a business you go by you're not buying those million trees but you're basically buying the carbon that that those million trees are pulling out of the world to offset your carbon

footprint that you're putting into the world right and so um climate is buying all these carbon offsets and as a result of buying all these carbon offsets they then are able to sell them to any business or anybody that wants to offset their carbon footprint so and you can do that all through crypto so really really powerful and uh yeah fascinating project and also important i think too because there's so much attention on crypto uh and web3 is being not environmentally friendly and not carbon neutral and you know and mining does take up a lot of energy and that's why we're all excited about the merge and

proof of stake and all of that so this is a great project that brings a lot of attention to oh wow like look at all the great stuff that web3 is doing to improve the environment i mean we had that pr episode a few months ago or a few weeks ago and we need more good stories we need to do good things for the world right if we just keep buying and selling monkey jpegs uh webster he's going nowhere um but when we can get these good stories then and make change to the world and impact the world in a in a positive way that's when you get the good stuff and so yeah great job uh climate clean medaille whatever you are clementine i think it is climadou uh a couple couple interesting uh facts uh about them one

i found this out while i was researching them they are a fork of olympus dao which is a a defy uh platform so really interesting to see olympus that was a stable coin that went to zero i think was it i think so i'm gonna just double check on that but i think it was ohm token you're right uh olympus that was also facilitated the removal of over 18 million metric tons of carbon from the market pretty incredible and that's essentially equal to planting 87 000 hectares of forest or taking four million cars off the road for an entire year

so we'll put the link in the show notes check out climadow klima dow somebody tell us how to say it please it's a great home didn't great um didn't go to zero but it was at a market cap of 4.4 billion and it's now down to like 300 million so like it it went pretty bad well maybe climadell will be the long-term story that came out about the olympus down then put in better news uh as i was researching this i pulled up coin gecko because i just want to see the token and ethereum is at 1700 so i mean that's exciting that's great news bullish bullish all right that's all we got for today uh a couple couple things to mention one we are
