Web3 Rollup: sports leagues using NFTs, Lens whitelist and the metaverse report
9 Sept 2022 · 1:06:38
The Web3 Academy weekly rollup with Jay Hamilton and Kyle Reidhead digs into a Hype Research metaverse report comparing Decentraland (about 300,000 monthly users) with Roblox (226 million users), brand activations such as Absolut at Coachella, and the NFL's Rarity League helmet PFPs ahead of NFL Rivals. They also discuss NFT trading volume down 99% as speculation fades and how to claim a Lens protocol handle.

gmgm welcome to the weekly roll up where we run down all the top web 3 news from the last week to keep you up to date and ahead of the crowd my name is jay bird and as always i'm here with my co-host kyle read head and our goal here at web3 academy is to help entrepreneurs businesses and creators explore and learn how to use web3 to transform business models and build thriving communities in today's roll up we are talking about so many exciting things going on metaverse adoption what's happening in the metaverse a lot of big brands adopting ticketmaster talking about adoption ticketmaster is getting on the blockchain i know we're all super stoked
about that let's dive into what's going on there the biggest sports leagues in the world nba nfl uh fifa fifa i was going to say champions league one of the soccer sports uh are using nfts we call it football over here in europe jay come on oh man let's not have the soccer football debate today the gods the gods and utes if you've been anywhere on crypto tour this past week you've been seeing i'm sure to gods and yout's big nft project that's just been blowing up on solana solana nfts what's going on there we're going to break that all down for you and so much more and and we are giving instructions
uh for how you can claim your lens protocol handle so many of you must have saw our tweets last or earlier this week uh where we have partnered with lens protocol and we are giving away a white list to those who were following sort of a quest for us and we're going to give you instructions later today or sorry later in this episode on exactly how you can claim your lens protocol handle if you've never heard of lens by the way lens protocol well the future of social media is here lens protocol is a web three social graph designed to empower creators to own the links between themselves and their community it allows you to own your content on your followers on your data it's a wonderful thing and we are excited to allow you to get access to
lens protocol because currently it's not open to the public but it is open to web3 academy listeners so stay tuned and later on in this episode we'll show you exactly what you got to do yeah yeah man i'm excited so much today welcome back jay i didn't have you last night but i missed you it's nice to see your smiling face again hi i miss you guys man i miss you guys here's here's a great quick story as we jump into gratitude so uh i i am grateful for taking time off it was wonderful to take time off spent time in paris and amsterdam uh with my beautiful fiancee but i'm also grateful for this show and on our vacation i was clearly
thinking about this show because i sleep talk so uh and i sleep talk quite a bit apparently i never know this sam will always tell me the next morning so we wake up one day and sam's like she's laughing at me and she says do you know what you said to me last night so the middle and i rolled over and i whispered her i was like hey hey do you want to be on the weekly roll up [Laughter] so where is she are we bringing her up no she's upstairs she's upstairs otherwise i would grab her so apparently even on vacation i'm still recruiting guests for our podcast nice i love it what are you what are you grateful for
okay i am grateful for exercise um so you know one of my favorite things is every day i gotta find you know 20 minutes minimum to exercise to do some yoga to just move my body and i find that so long as i get at least 15 minutes in of this it changes everything it changes the way you think it changes your energy levels it changes how you feel it's sort of like a reset to the brain and so anyone out there that's you know feeling down when they wake up feeling lethargic feeling fatigued feeling maybe anxious or stressed or whatever all you need to do this is like one of the biggest hacks i think in the world and a lot of very successful people live by this all you need to do is just go
and get 15 minutes of increasing your heart rate and all of a sudden your whole brain like everything you think how you feel will just change just like that um i think it's like one of the best call it medication even though it's not a medication but one of the best like treatments um for whatever it is that's going on if it's something to do mentally um and i just it's an it's an addiction for me to be honest it's something i gotta do every day and i love to do it in the morning and so very grateful for the ability to move my body and get my heart rate up i love it man true words true words i went for a beautiful walk this morning i didn't really get my heart rate up because it was like 6 a.m so i was huffing with my coffee pretty slowly but
[Laughter] all right what's what's the web 3 word of the week kai the web 3 word of the week uh is a little bit ironic but it's no time off uh except for jay who just took time off i feel like the web three world doesn't the web dreamworld doesn't take any time off like the last couple weeks is supposed to be the time when everyone's on vacation uh and not much is happening in the business world yet like it just doesn't stop we keep launching products there's new things coming out all the time there's new announcements um it just seems even the last few weeks i mean the merge is coming so you can see everyone's still working on that there's just so much going on and it's like isn't it labor day weekend like shouldn't we have some time off and it's
just i don't know seems like there's no time off in web 3. i don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing let's get into the news of all the things that are being built right now kyle what do we got up first on today's docket here well this was a report from hype research that came out just sort of diving into the metaverse uh and particularly looking into decentraland and roblox decentraland is a decentralized um uh web 3 version of the metaverse and then roblox is obviously i think what the most popular metaverse in the world right now um somewhat of an open platform where anyone can sort of build and create games and do things on it a lot of cool experience going on there and so they were just sort of breaking down um some of the difference between the two
what the adoption's like what the users are saying over there what brands are doing it was quite interesting so i just want to run through a few things you can just see here that they have the brands that are actually activating and running events on these two metaverses already uh decentraland for example has absolute has coca-cola forever 21 sotheby's samsung mac dkny i don't know what the other two are ellie uh and something else but roblox has tommy hilfiger nike gucci kellogg's vans ralph lauren chipotle um so some big time brands that are already experimenting and playing around in the metaverse um and so very very interesting let's go over to page five i believe it is yeah page five
and it breaks down some of the platforms just like on user base in that so decentraland um has three hundred thousand monthly active users not massive by any means ten thousand daily active users it's actually quite small roblox on the other hand though 226 million overall users that's pretty big um 54.1 million daily active users 67 of users are under the age of 16. so that is pretty interesting now roblox is not technically like web3 they don't have nfts or any of that kind of stuff yet they do sell virtual assets but you don't actually own them right they're just they're owned by roblox whereas decentraland does allow you to
own uh in-game assets in the uh form of nfts uh and these are things like uh avatar wearables um owning unique names virtual real estate things like that so that's pretty cool um and then just sort of breaks down um some brand use cases which i think we'll dive into one of them the absolute one which is pretty cool um but uh in terms of monetization they're just talking about in the metaverse brands in roblox anyway um brands and creators sell digital items um to their in-game marketplace whereas in decentraland you can do like token gated events you can sell nfts and all that kind of stuff so it's kind of two different types of metaverse i think eventually they will sort of
both end up combining into what they are roblox is more about the user experience um because it has nothing to do with blockchain so it's a very nice user experience tons of games on there a big social concept on roblox mainly for kids but there's i mean there's all age groups on roblox decentraland is more like blockchain building um it's all about kind of nfts they're starting to become games and things and so i think they're both sort of like merge at some point uh to be this like amazing user experience that also uses digital ownership like nfts but let's move over to 11. i want to look at what absolute was doing let's just want to touch on a few things here that i think are really interesting first
the the size of roblox at 54 million daily active users and the fact that 67 of those are under 16 what that is telling us that is a clear signal that the under 16 age bracket is already active in the metaverse now they might not call it the metaverse but they are they are in these types of virtual worlds they are spending time in the virtual world so what that means is when we talk about and i think people are like how is it possible that there's going to be a billion people in the metaverse in the next 10 years right they don't think it's so hard to grasp that type of exponential growth that's
going to happen but this is the clear signal right here you're talking about in in five years 10 years those people are going to be in their early 20s they're going to be in jobs they're going to be in careers they're going to be building and they came from virtual worlds they spent time in virtual worlds so that's native to wow it's native exactly and that that native is that is a huge signal to the growth that is going to come is that they grew up with this so it will be it's the same thing that happened with mobile and the move to apps right there was a generation that grew up on mobile and the move to apps was very simple for them right and that exact same thing is going to happen now so that's one thing i just want to point out
purchasing digital goods is native to them as well they've been doing that since they were born essentially since they could hold on to their phones exactly roblox so yeah like all the time he's gonna be so normal to them it's weird for exactly 30 plus year olds you know most of our listeners but so normal and so like native to them well and i think that like it will we always talk about the user experience but user experience will get better and we'll get more used to it and we might not all spend time in the metaverse in the same way right like zoom is a version of the metaverse in a way in that we're meeting online right we're in the metaverse right now as we film this uh the other the other comment i want to make is both kyle and i are reading
matthew ball's book the metaverse right now which is a great book uh and one of my biggest takeaways was his ability to define the metaverse and what really helped me was understanding this he gives this um breakdown of a virtual world versus a meta galaxy versus the metaverse and so roblox and decentraland are our virtual worlds right they are small pieces now what they will ideally do is they will connect to other virtual worlds through a meta galaxy and then in within the meta galaxy you
will connect to the greater metaverse which is basically like the internet today which is just protocols and nobody owns it it's fully decentralized right so i think that is also an important distinction to make is that these are more virtual worlds as opposed to the metaverse because it's not possible that one person could own the metaverse so long as the metaverse is built with open uh right open protocol exactly which we don't know if that will happen uh we hope that that happens and it's i don't want to say it's likely that it will uh it's hopeful that it will uh and so long as that happens then yes all these are sort of their own things and you can go in and out and they'll be interoperable etc kind of like what the internet is today exactly but there is no
straightforward pathway to that yet um but there are people working on that and we hope that that becomes a thing so which brings up the one point is please everybody when you're talking about this build interoperable standards right right that's what's important we need support them yeah yeah so absolute which is a vodka brand um they have we're doing some pretty cool things actually in decentraland i just want to highlight them just so we have kind of some ideas of what's being toyed with and experimented with right now um and so absolute celebrated 10 years as the official vodka sponsor of coachella by recreating elements of the music and arts festival in decentraland in a virtual experience called absolute land
basically what they did is they had an anti-gravity dance floor where visitors could come with their avatars and just like float around between the floors so just sort of something fun a little experience to kind of test things out they had an absolute bar i don't know how this thing worked but an absolute bar where visitors could order a cocktail and it'd be delivered to them in the real world i have no idea how the hell they made that happen maybe it's like you could buy a bottle and they like send that bottle to you but it would have to be like us only maybe i don't know how they did that well i think there's i think this activation happened at coachella so you would have been at coachella and that's probably where because then you're already right okay someone just shows up gives
it to you okay cool yeah uh they had a selfie room where visitors could share selfies on social media for a chance to win uh nft wearables so kind of gamifying some stuff um and obviously good marketing and branding for absolute to do this they had a museum gallery where visitors could discover and explore the brand's rich history and art uh and they did pride tunnel and rainbow rave where visitors could share dance moves on social media for a chance to win pride themed absolute land nft wearables so just kind of creating a fun experience digitally um and you know again it's just sort of something that is um an experiment and it teaches people what the metaverse is like and i don't know i went to a concert in decentraland
i think it was last year it was like paris hilton uh it was dead mouse actually is who i saw but perisilta was also there which is weird and um it was cool it was like a bunch of people like running around jumping on each other while dead mouse was literally playing on stage and i was like i was just sitting on my couch while i was waiting for my girlfriend at the time to like get ready i think we were going to dinner um so it was uh it was an interesting fun little experiment and i think this is what absolute's doing and it's just kind of cool to see yeah i think it's great to really to understand how much fun this stuff can be and brands are are highlighting that i mean you guys if you're listening to the podcast you can't see the slide we're
looking at right now but there's some uh wearables there's this like puffy absolute jacket and these pride uh absolute sandals and they look sweet like these are awesome and i think this concept of like wearables in the metaverse is very very foreign to us like i i would fully fall into that like why on earth would i ever buy you know a jacket for my avatar but as we spend more time in the metaverse i i buy into this like i can see how i would want something cool for my avatar to wear around like that's my identity that's me right when i played grand theft auto when i was younger i would spend so much time on my
character trying to make him cool like have some sweet swag and um i remember doing that when i was younger for sure so if this is something you're gonna but i barely ever used it so now imagine now when you're actually using this to go to work or to do whatever else you're gonna do go to social events and things like whatever kids are doing in roblox now like why wouldn't you want to soup that thing up go to the last slide 31 there's just some interesting stats i wanted to uh i wanted to to show just on like user behavior inside the metaverse now the metaphors are still super super early we are light years away from like having the technology ready to actually perform to what we need for the universe to like create good experiences um that are more similar to the real world um uh matthew
ball highlights that a lot in the book but um even now like i mean if you've ever been to centuryland it is a terrible looking game or experience to be honest but when we look at what the users are saying uh 59 of metaverse users are excited to transition real world experiences into digital ones 92 percent of metaverse users care about building their digital identities so there you go 62 of metaverse users have engaged with one or more branded virtual experiences and 79 of metaverse users have made a purchase in the virtual world so very very interesting very very bullish for the metaverse um and yeah as the experiences get better i think people are going to love this
stuff these stats are incredible we're already there like we're already you know like it's not the metaverse in the way that like matthew ball pictures it in the way that i think a lot of us picture it but like we're there we're online we're building digital identities and we're purchasing stuff there we don't quite have the ownership yet but holy geez we are there it's getting there and the biggest brands are all playing around as well yeah and as should you if you're listening to this and you have a company start playing there start participating in whatever way you can whether it's the metaverse whether it's nfts whether it's uh some form of blockchain or crypto like who knows what works for best for you but get involved don't sit on the sidelines there's
there's lots of fun to be had okay i got to tweet up here uh just on the topic of the metaverse in the last this year so far this year uh so we're what eight months into this year there has been 150 u.s trademark applications have been filed for metaverse web 3 crypto related goods and services that's more than double all of 2021. if you want a signal of the growth that's happening and most recently uh i was looking at some recent ones what do we got here um ford filed trademarks for virtual cars virtual vans clothing and an nft
marketplace sony music filed trademarks for nft backed media including art music nfts and hermes which is a luxury brand filed trademarks for nfts virtual currencies virtual clothing and footwear so it's coming it's coming fast there's a lot of money going into this space all right this is ticketmaster is going on the blockchain uh and ticketmaster is huge like i mean every concert uh sporting events i don't even know what else but everyone uses ticketmaster for this kind of stuff and they are now uh building on top of flow not to nft their tickets just yet i don't think the ux is quite there and honestly probably the reason they're not
doing it yet is because the scalability is probably not quite there yet to actually do it like if you want to go i mean i was at the barcelona game last night 100 000 people right there's no way we could use nfts we all went into the stadium at the exact same time whatever blockchain you're gonna use is gonna crash for sure so they're not quite there however what they are doing is they're using the flow blockchain to let event organizers issue nfts tied to tickets so creating sort of like memorabilia and things when you do purchase a ticket on ticketmaster and i believe this is their sort of like step uh stepwise approach to getting to nft tickets itself because honestly when you think about this there is no point in having the actual ticket and then an
nft tied to it the nft might as well just be the ticket right why would why do we need two of these tools these digital tools uh when you can just have one and one you actually get to own um so right now it's just an experimental thing i don't think that they have the confidence to like allow an entire event especially a big one to just use nfts i don't think most people even know what to do or how to purchase them uh or how to use them so they've got a sort of this is their way of teaching their users like hey yeah you can buy your ticket the normal way the web 2 way but check this thing out over here if you have a wallet you can get this and it'll stay with you forever and you own it and just a cool experiment in a sort
of an education component to their users which is amazing i would assume ticketmaster is trying everything they can to eventually make nfts become the actual tickets uh who knows how far away we are for that but um super interesting yeah really really exciting to see love it all right metallic our boy vitalik buterin who is the founder of ethereum uh is releasing a book and this is just a book from all of his writings over the last i think it's like two or three years all about proof-of-stake so the book is called proof-of-stake uh the making of ethereum and the philosophy of blockchains uh metallica is just a gigabrain as you would call him
in this space and he writes and writes and writes all about blockchain and research et cetera and so they've compiled all of his writings into a book and they're selling it via an nft it launches on september 27th but what's really cool about this is you purchase the nft and then they will send you a signed book by vitalik itself but all of the proceeds from this uh from vitalik's portion of this uh will go to get coin bitcoin grants so it supports open source public goods uh and git coin is the one who will then decide where that money goes and bitcoin grants i think is a dao and they'll distribute that money to projects in the space um so really really cool um probably gonna be a very technical book to read to be honest if
you've ever read his uh his articles they are pretty aggressive um but i'm sure there's plenty to learn nonetheless i i was reading a uh an article about vitalik the other day and i think he's the one he's the one leader that everybody should follow uh and should try to keep up with but at the same time it's tough to read his writing like he is he is so technical and so deep that often i find it's almost better to find an article written about him or somebody that's digesting and reproducing what he's written but it's just a couple takeaways from this article they were talking about how um when they first started ethereum uh which was
i think they there was it started in switzerland i think there was eight eight people in an airbnb and there was a real uh sort of budding of heads a real controversy around whether ethereum should be a business uh and there was a few people that really believed that it should be a business it should take on google and it should you know essentially be you know the new internet but as a business right and vitalik he's just so he's so altruistic to the core like it's so fascinating to have this leader who believes he was never in it for the money and he said from the beginning he
did not think it should be a business he always thought it should be a foundation or some form of not-for-profit and that it's its purpose in the world would be to make the world a better place to improve public goods and and he actually they it came to a head where he um had to ask two of the founders to leave and one of those founders i believe is now the founder of cardano blockchain yeah so uh you know it's just it's so like what how refreshing is it to have a leader like this who is not focused at all in profit like it's just it almost doesn't make sense like this is we don't have anybody like this in our world
anymore when when you look at these blockchains which are really the foundational layer of all web three um i mean there have been many that have blown up and did not go well and a lot of it is around the community that's building on like building the blockchain or building on the blockchain and one of the reasons why i'm so excited about ethereum um one i mean obviously it's gross and everything it's doing it's accomplished so much but like the leadership from vitalik and others in the space um has been so incredible that it's just created such an amazing community of people who really get it they have deep rooted ethos um and it's it's just created an amazing community the other one that i would say that's doing this and is in the it's still newer but it's also it's solana i think anatoly is also
an amazing leader he's extremely smart like just a gig of brain as well just like vitalik comes from qualcomm so he's big on this in this world of telecommunications and hardware and all this kind of stuff but he's also created a really really solid community and you can see that when you look at the communities of all these different blockchains i think ethereum and solana kind of stand alone um i mean the terra community was just completely toxic and look at what happened um you have stuff going on avalanche and same thing and uh and why is it toxic weird i don't know what's going on that community why is it taxes because it's profit focused i mean there's a there's a simple takeaway here if you're building a community and you're mission focused
you will attract the right people that all want the same thing as you and you'll get true buy-in and true commitment right 100 if you're building a community that is profit focused then you'll you just get a bunch of money hungry you know apes like you know it's it's it's not it's not what you want yeah so shout out vitalik keep it up my man i love it okay next up here a16z has launched open source nft licenses this is absolutely huge for any nft project out there and these licenses are called can't be evil
licenses which is just incredible because it's a play on google's original mantra of don't be evil but let me just break down basically i wrote an article this past monday if you haven't read it all about cc0 and uh nftip rights in general it's a big it's a big it's a big thing to understand it's very complex and it's a challenge in the industry right now because nobody really understands and the main issue is that right now if you buy an nft most people think that they own the ip of their nft but you do not the current licenses do not allow you to have that ownership essentially what is
happening right now like board api club is the easiest example of this is you are being given a revocable license so at any point board api club can take away that license from you if they don't want you to have it so there's just a lot of ambiguity right um and so what a sixteen zed has done here is they've come together and they've released these copy and paste licenses that anybody can put into your smart contract for your nft project to basically achieve a couple of core purposes one protect the creator's ip very important to grant nft holders a baseline of rights that are irrevocable
enforceable and easy to understand and three help creators and their communities unleash the economic potential of their projects why why do they call them can't be evil well because blockchains enable a new version of the internet where people don't necessarily need to trust each other or companies to transact it's not the hope of google's don't be evil it's the certainty that people can't be which i just love and there's a tweet here from chris dixon can't be evil is greater than don't be evil uh and so i'm just gonna open up just quickly take a look at there's a great chart and if you in our show notes we'll link to
this article that explains all these licenses sorry i got a little bit i think sica at the end of my vacation so my voice is a little bit off today uh there's six licenses here and what's great about these six licenses is they cover the various types of rights that you would want in an nft project uh so one of the things let me i'm just gonna pick out a few examples one of the things that a lot of people are afraid of especially a lot of artists is there's a big fear that what if my if i go cc0 or if i give rights to my nft holders what if they use it for hate speech what if they take that nft and
they put it on a political campaign that is related to hate speech well that would be awful well one of these nft licenses has hate speed hate speech revocation in it so you can revoke the license if somebody uses it for hate speech amazing right these licenses also cover commercial use they cover modify and adapt they cover copy display and distribute so can you commercialize can you sell and can you sub license uh so shout out 816 said this is the again this is the interoperable standards that we need that everybody can build on top of let's go a16 i say z you say zed i say z which one's canadian which one's
american zed is canadian is that oh yeah yeah that's weird i didn't know that you're american [Laughter] i'm not american but uh [Music] you've been gone from canada for too long yeah right i say football now instead of soccer that's right a little bit of everything so uh here's some cool news so we've talked about tornado cash a lot you know the us um treasury department sanctioned tornado cash uh we don't really agree with it um and so we said there's probably gonna be lawsuits and things well today coinbase announced um that they are funding and supporting a lawsuit by six individuals against the treasury department sanctions of tornado caches um smart contracts um this is really cool we're
not gonna go into any more details of that because we actually don't really know yet this just was announced just before we started recording um but really really cool to see coinbase the the leader in the space the one of the only public companies in this space is not just like supporting it but they're actually funding it so they're putting their money where their mouth is so kudos to brian armstrong and the crew of coinbase um this is awesome to see and uh we'll keep everyone updated on how these um how this lawsuit goes i mean i'm sure it's gonna take months and months if not years um but uh we need we need this kind of stuff because this is gonna set precedent and this is really really important for our industry so thank you coinbase let's get on to nfts jay yeah what's
going on in nfts guys not much i mean there is there is there is there is a lot happening but this article i like the title that says looks bear which is a play on looks rare the nft marketplace uh but check this out open c turns into nft ghost town after daily volume plunges 99 from its peak 99 and now that's in terms of transaction volume um that's a big drop now look here's the thing it makes sense because in a bear market speculation just goes out the window and we go back to fundamentals this is why in the bear market we're talking about things like cc0 nft royalties right the fundamental things of these nft
businesses we're not talking about the dumb stupid floor prices of some stupid monkey profile picture right and so yes speculation's gone so people have stopped trading these things people have stopped putting their life savings into these ridiculous pictures and people are going okay what just happened of last year what are we buying what is this stuff and this is when we start to figure things out and build the next generation of nfts so it's actually a very exciting time so i love this headline seeing that it's down 99 it means we can start to like figure these things out and build something that's actually useful it's actually very similar to what happened in 2017 where in 2017 there was the ico mania so this is when tokens first became a thing
fungible tokens and everyone launched any token they could about the most ridiculous projects everyone bought it there was insane speculation uh and then it they all went to like they all clapped like 99 even the good projects at that time um which was actually a great buying opportunity for the blue chips um and uh but so you know the same kind of thing happened that's exactly what's happening now nfcs are not dead they're not gone they're not going anywhere um and like to be honest we have so much news coming up talking about all the new things going on with nfts there's plenty happening it's just they're not getting these over ridiculous prices people are not then trading them we're starting to build things that actually matter people so they're buying fts to use them right
or because they want them um and i think you know the big unlock aventis is not really these big pieces of art or these big like you know boarded yacht club type stuff it's actually the like free style of entities like sold by nfts that are like data points for your reputation and your digital identity it's like other ways of using nfts where you might not even ever trade them because you're using them for your product or your membership or your identity or your certification or whatever that to me is really a bigger unlock empty and i think that's where we're about to start seeing things so i don't know i'm still super bullish on a tease i think so much is still coming from the space and i'm happy to see it
down 99 i'm not gonna lie i luckily didn't have a lot of bags on ft so i'm sorry for those that did uh but like me [Laughter] no i agree i think it's uh it's a good thing it flushes out the speculators and let's bring in more builders speaking about builders what's going on with uh with the gods and utes this is one of the hottest nft projects and i think a really good example of of of an nft project doing things the right way so to gods if you don't know the project is the biggest pfp project on solana
i believe that their floor is um i think in east terms around solana terms i think their floor is about 15 eth so quite a high floor and a a a very successful project a great community very bought in and the gods created uh a spun out of the gods was called was dust labs and dust labs is unlike yugo labs is like the parent company of board api club and crypto punks and me bits um dust labs is not the parent company of the gods but it was spun out of the gods so there's a connection there but it's sort of a side thing um but dust labs uh also recently created utes uh and utes just
got so much hype and for good yeah for good reason it's fun to say utes um and one thing i want to touch on here is one of the reasons they got so much hype is their branding was so good and they built a community around a mission their mission was to and it still is they're actually minting right now they've had a couple issues with their mints so it's kind of delayed they were supposed to meet a few days ago and i think i think now it's happening i'm not on the waitlist i'm not exactly sure of the uh the exact days that it's minting but one of the reasons it's been so successful is because this community they built was all around this idea of we want to build a community of web 3
enthusiasts who want want to build and want to be part of something not speculators not traders uh and in order to to mint you had to actually apply like they had an application and i know we've talked about jump community being so successful and what made that so successful was they didn't they weren't focused on being the biggest they did applications they did interviews and in a way now the ute project is 15 000 pfps so there's no way they were doing interviews with 15 000 people and i don't know the ins and outs of the application i did not apply but just this idea of
you need to have a mission they had a clear mission and then you how do you make sure that your community is sharing in that mission and wants that same thing and they did that and as a result they've had incredible success they also just announced i believe earlier this week that they've raised seven million dollars uh two dust labs to continue to build that out so really great success uh and just a great and also their branding like i said it's just amazing i love their branding i'm looking at on my other screen here i'm looking at a couple images that are super cool this actually just reminded me that we see the 99 drop in uh volume on open c part of that is also because when the like all-time high of the volume was
which is last year back in maybe november or something i can't remember exactly when it was they didn't have a whole lot of competition whereas now they have looks rare they have so rare uh they have flow blockchain which has been around for a while but if magic eden they have um pseudoswap so there is a lot of action still happening on a tease it's just not all on open c anymore um which is probably a good thing um yeah i just remembered that all right let's move on to sports entities this is pretty crazy um so lots happening in the sports world and man i was at the barcelona champions league game last night first time i've been to like a european football game and that's sweet it was pretty amazing and 100 000 people in the stadium and
all i could think of was like and they're like they're singing the whole game they're just like they're so everyone's wearing a jersey like it was pretty cool and all i could think of was like oh we gotta tokenize this community like what is gonna happen because also the barcelona is a little bit different where they don't even have like owners they have members so you actually they kind of have a dow model for the barcelona club which is super interesting um and they vote so the members i think you buy in is a wait list and then you all vote like they're like shareholders almost they call them members and they vote on the decisions of the um of the club which is funny because they're also 1.4 billion dollars in debt so they didn't do a very good job uh but this is what i learned yesterday
but anyway speaking of sports so um the big news here was that nba has partnered with so rare so so rare is an nft marketplace on ethereum and maybe potentially polygon as well i'm not quite sure uh but anyway they are basically launching an nft fantasy um fantasy basketball game it's free to play um and it's like collectible-based fantasy basketball game kind of thing um and it's gonna happen for this season the 2022-2023 season and they're the official partners of so rare so so rare can use the nba as like their like their logos and things like that and vice versa um so super super cool i mean the nba has been
a marketing machine and a branding machine the last 20 30 years whatever it's been like they became one of the most popular sports in the world over the last 30 years because they've just been ahead of everybody every sport in terms of marketing digital branding digital experiences etc uh and now they're stepping up and including nfts now they're not the only one i mean i think we go to the next one here we have what is it fifa is also doing i don't know if this one's fantasy but they've launched fifa collect um which is uh it's kind of like what um well the nba top shots thing it's similar to that um where you can collect moments from fifa world cup in the fifa women's world cup
um and they're nft based i couldn't figure out what platform this was actually on or what blockchain they're using um i didn't dive too deep into it but so fifa's doing the same sort of thing where they're starting to introduce their fans to nfts so that is really cool and then the final one is jesus yeah you got this one yeah the nfl is also entering the space with uh nfl rivals it's called uh which is there essentially they're building a sort of like a fantasy-like game um that it sounds more it sounds like it's half fantasy half like arcade game
but what's interesting about this is they it takes time to build a game and it also you don't necessarily want to start by just launching a game we talk all the time on this podcast about the importance of like dipping your toes in to the space and so what the nfl did is they have this nfl rivals um road uh which essentially says that they're going to launch this nfl rivals in 2023 but they wanted to get into the space the nfl season starts today actually today is the first day of the nfl season uh and so what they did was they launched rarity league
which is essentially a pfp collection of helmets for each team so if you're an nfl fan you can buy a pfp of your favorite team to show show off your support and then as a result of having that pfp you will get early access to their game that they are building interesting you know when i look at these three i think the nfts as moments i don't really get that i don't know why people want to buy a replay of like a cool moment it doesn't really make sense to me and going back to like cc0 and licensing and stuff like i'm sure they doesn't come with a whole lot of rights uh i don't know but i'm assuming no i
think the fantasy idea though this fantasy league is super super cool when they get there they're not going all out on this one it's just a free thing where you can collect some nfts it's not really like the nft is like i think useful to the experience of the game itself but when you get to a point where there's only a certain amount of like let's say tom brady nfts in your fantasy football game and you get to own it from one season to the next and like you actually own that player um man you could do some really really cool things so i i think the route of fantasy football's entities or fantasy whatever any sport with nfts is really cool the moments thing and whatever and then this is cool i do think having some collections and creating a game
eventually around nfts is just like another way to create some competition and some fun in sports so i think this is actually quite a cool idea we'll see where they go with it but very interesting and i think the other the thing to me is it's all about just getting nfts in the hands of your fans because we talk about this all the time it's just a huge unlock of access to your fans like currently the only way you access your fans is through their their email address right like great i have your email address what can i really do with that like you know i can just send you emails like that's not very exciting if i have your wallet
address i can i can i can give you access i can token gate access to certain things because i give you a white list to the lens product i can give you a white list oh oh what do you think's coming up next this is actually no we're going to explain this because so what happened here um i'm going to explain why wall address is so useful so um just to your point that you're just going on jay so lens protocol is a partnership that we've created with them as i said it is not public access to get your lens handle this is like creating your instagram account or your facebook account except this handle lets you get access to all the apps built on top of lens protocol there is lens tube which is like the youtube version there's lenster which is like your facebook
there's so many um and you only need one you get one handle and it allows you to go into all these applications with your same profile and everything and so really important to get your name this is why you want to be on this whitelist and you want to do this so we put out a tweet saying hey we partnered with lens protocol you've got to follow us on spotify on apple podcast and on youtube screenshot and then share your wallet address on twitter and we will copy and paste that and then we'll get to your whitelist well we had 3 500 people do this so obviously we can't handle that much that's insane even if it was emails we couldn't do that so we said okay what can we do here well we just got everyone to subscribe to our podcast and most of the people anyway
are ideally listening to our podcast here's what we're going to do we're going to take the people that are actually listening to our content consuming so like the real people not the bots on twitter right and what we're going to do is ask them to follow us like on the blockchain so we're gonna get you guys to follow our lens handle right now and all of a sudden now we can just pull it from um the ether scan or the polygon scan whatever it's called and we can automatically get every wallet address of someone who follows us and we can drop you nft if we want we can send you tokens we can whitelist you on lens and we don't have to get any information from you don't need your name we don't need your email we don't need to do any of that stuff so that's kind of the
solution and what's really really cool about these applications being built on blockchains and so if you want to get a whitelist for lens protocol all you have to do is go to so the link will be in the show notes but it's lens friends.xyz slash and this is then our lens protocol handle which is web3 web3academy.lens okay the link is in the show notes basically what you need to do is click on that link and you'll see on our screen here if you're listening it's basically just our profile on lens protocol and all you can see here is you can see our followers you know who we're following you can see a description you can see like links to our twitter and our website whatever all you have to do and you don't need a lens protocol handle to do this because
again it's just via the blockchain but you'll see at the top right there's a spot to connect your wallet you're just going to connect your your metamask wallet or whatever wallet you have but in this case jay is actually going to do it so jay just click connect wallet let's hope that this works you can never really trust the web 3 ux live here but all you're doing perfect that was super simple oh the screen's coming up full screen here relatively simple just connect your metamask wallet to the site to um lens uh to the lens friends site and then you're just gonna click follow and it's gonna ask you to sign a message um i believe in order to do this yeah science game to lens yeah go for it there we go
now you're just clicking follow so what you're doing is you're actually following our lens protocol handle which is an nft and you're following our wallet essentially our wallet address it's a click follow i don't even know if you'll need to sign again we'll find out here what pops up um but once you do that then you're all set that is all you have to do and what's going to happen boom it's following the the check mark so listeners connect to lens friends uh dot xyz web through academy dot lens just go follow you connect in your your metamask wall and then follow us that will allow us to pull your wallet address and automatically create a whitelist for you now it will take a few days because we are going to get lens to uh have to give everyone the white list so expect next
week um i would say probably by wednesday which is september uh what would that be you got a calendar up by any chance september 14th september uh go back to the lens site and you will be able to claim your lens protocol handle at that point there's nothing more that you need to do my friends that is all so thank you for all doing this and i'm excited to allow everyone to get on lens and let's start chatting on there and try out the new the new world of social and to be clear i you don't need i didn't need i i followed web through academy without having a a lens handle right so you don't need a lens handle in order to follow on lens friends so anybody anybody can do this
and then yeah get whitelisted all right let's talk about uh fit for digital i can never say physical and digital combined yes thank you kai so there's a lot happening around physical and digital combined which i think is a massive unlock particularly for the fashion industry and so last week clone x launched their what is called forging so if you have a clonex nft which is uh
artifact artifacts owned by nike this is their pfp collection and if you have a clonex nft you can forge and by forging you get access to digital there you go perch digital merch so uh if we look here in this collection uh you get access to there's shoes there's a hoodie there's a t-shirt there's a hat there's socks all different types of merch and what you get is you'll get the digital version of this and then you also can claim the physical version um
so really really interesting and there's a lot of brands experimenting with this right now i actually am wearing my digital hoodie so this is i have the adidas into the metaverse nft as part of owning that nft i got to claim merch and i just got this about a week ago uh because it's your wallet address on there so yeah so my wallet address is on the the hoodie you're gonna use your ens name at least i know hey it like it looked but it's kind of cool the wall yeah 0x and it is kind of like it's kind of cool um and then and then there's g money logo and ape logo a punk's logo and an adidas logo oh that's cool so i like it
pretty pretty i think it's it's a pretty uh exciting unlock because again this comes down to as we just said when you have your fan's wallet address there's so much you can do with that by giving them access to different things and and so that's i think really exciting but the other thing i think is and we haven't really talked a lot about this yet we talked a bit about this actually earlier in the show is this idea of like we are going to be building our digital avatars and when we build our digital avatars we will like you said kai in gta you spent tons of time creating your avatar and dressing him up
and what does he look like and what hat does he wear and what shoes does he wear well what we're going to want to do is we're going to make our digital avatars just like us in the real world we're going to want to give it the same shoes the same hat so how cool is it to be able to have a pair of air force ones that you have physically but then you also your avatar has those air force ones on it i think that it's i don't know maybe it's i think it's going to be really cool i don't know if i fully grasp how cool it is yet but i think it's much cooler than i even think it is i think when you read bathyball's book you start to see the big picture this year like whoa okay launches what's going on with launches
in the web3 space some exciting new launch is fx hash which is a generative art nft platform built on tazos blockchain blockchain we don't talk a ton about but a great blockchain nonetheless has created fx text which is another uh publishing nft platform so a platform that you can publish articles on and then sell them as nfts you could sell them you could give them away for free people can collect them but what's really interesting about fx text is that these these articles are not
non-fungible tokens they are semi-fungible tokens semi-fungal tokens what yeah so wrap your head around that well i don't know what it is yet we have non-fungible tokens we have fungible tokens what the heck's the semi-final token do you know can you explain it yeah okay so so a semi-fungible token is okay so here's the thing a non-fungible token uh is a one of one right which uh cannot be it's immutable right once it's created it cannot be edited right uh the the thing for publishers is you might want to edit your content you might want to edit your article so
semi-fungible means that you can create a article and then you can edit it but you edit it on the blockchain so if you were to edit it it would show on the blockchain it would show past versions of it so anybody could see and it would show when you edited it what you did so it's fully unblocked on the chain but it is it does allow this ability of editing uh an article which i think like is really interesting i could buy an nft piece of art from an artist and two years later they could like re that art or like upgrade that art into
something else and that's semi-fungible with that yeah yeah that that would that would explain it interesting i could see some use cases with that you could also get rugged like what if they just say they do this beautiful art piece you buy it and they're just like draw a black line over top of it totally and i think this again this does not this is not about speculation this is not about making money this is about collecting and supporting right you know you would want to support some of your favorite authors because i think one of the big things that we we talk so much about art well writers and authors are creating art in their own way right and we need to tokenize that and support them and so you know we've talked about mirror we've talked about other platforms that are
doing this same thing uh it's just every time somebody launches something new there's always a little twist and semi-fungal tokens is it's a new twist keep up with what's why are you going to listen to the podcast when you start explaining web3 to someone don't start with semi-fungible tokens that'll lose them that's for sure okay another launch in the space this past week is the warehouse so uh genies which is a leading digital avatar startup has launched the warehouse which is a nft marketplace to purchase clothing for your avatar and so are these non-fungible or semi-fungible
these are non-fungible these are fungible uh as you can tell i've gone down the i've gone down the digital avatar uh rabbit hole recently uh and i have not purchased any clothes uh on the screen right now there's a pair of bunny slippers that you can purchase for a digital avatar and this this again this might sound completely ridiculous but as we build our digital avatars we will want to dress them up and make them look cool and isn't exciting to buy them a pair of shoes and maybe you buy them a pair of shoes that is a limited collection and then over time those shoes create more value and then you can sell them uh so yeah cool cool to see uh great of really
i mean the genies if you want to follow the digital average star space check out genies they are a real leader in the space can you use these can you put these clothings on an avatar right now like you've shown a lot of these in this episode and i always try to figure out like i understand eventually they will go on avatars but i don't think that that's even like yet i don't think the tech is there yet is it that is a great question uh so i do i think that i think you can within certain worlds right right so you could in in decentraland for example like in decentraland you could buy
clothing that is already in decentraland right so it's not interoperable yet i don't think you have to purchase it within the virtual world but we're definitely going in that direction it's just it comes back interoperable standards that's what we need right like yeah because you gotta understand an nft is interoperable in the sense that it can go from one application to another and be recognized but that doesn't mean the thing that is the nft whether that's a video or a picture or something is actually then interoperable with the the game or the world that you're in just the standard of the nft itself the ownership the id is the only thing that's actually interoperable right now um
the actual image or thing that is displayed of that id is not really interoperable yet we're a long ways away from that to be completely honest um okay under the ones and twos as we begin to wrap up this show um this is really cool so arbitrary nitro uh was launched um recently and the cost to do a transaction so to send eth on arbitrary nitro which is um uh they need to update here's the cybertron one but which is a layer two on ethereum is now one cent one cent and you have full security of ethereum and it's one cent to send eth and what's funny is this is a tweet here from david mihal i'm just going to the top of it again um the internet of money should not cost
five cents per transaction it's kind of absurd so this is vitalik a quote he said years ago where basically he was predicting that blockchains this is back when like ethereum was the only thing that existed and it was expensive um and so he was saying that eventually they'll be under five cents um to do any transaction uh he's like even five cents itself is absurd which at the time was like wow that's kind of crazy like it's gonna get down to that cheap and uh and this is just david mihale saying check we've done that it's now below that uh arbitrary nitro is under it's basically one cent to do a transaction that is pretty incredible if you have seen the stats going on on arbitrary right now since launching this it is crazy they're getting so much transaction volume um so many users heading that way and they
haven't even launched i think um odyssey they launched it forever ago then they stopped it they waited for nitro and it's coming back which is like a marketing campaign amongst all the apps um this is gonna be really cool to watch um we actually have the uh cmo of arbitration coming on the show in the next couple couple weeks um and we will talk all about this i wanted to highlight that here uh but keep crushing it arbitrage this is sweet to see a layer two under one cent love it this is what we need scalability we're gonna do it we're gonna do it we're doing it we can do it [Laughter] okay santiago santos he's a legend nft collector uh and pretty big in the space um but uh he tweeted out
today uh just a great take and i think it's great to share for the entrepreneurs that are listening here and he says web3 builders should assume majority of users won't change their behavior they'll continue to value convenience and utility above else make it fun engaging in feature parity with web 2 apps then sprinkle web through magic don't assume your users will care or notice web3 elements up front what he's saying here is most people don't give a [ __ ] about decentralization or ownership or any of these things that we all preach and love in the ethos of web3 they actually don't care whatsoever all they want is a great experience does this thing make their life better right and yes there are some things of owning and really the the
benefit of owning is the interoperability because if you own it you can take it from instagram over to twitter you know what i mean i mean obviously you can't right now but in the web3 world when we have those versions you can and that is a huge unlock that is something where people go oh cool i don't need to go and create another account over here right they don't actually care about the ownership aspect of it it's the features that ownership provides same with decentralization they don't care about decentralization but sure they probably like to not get banned off a site for saying something or having to deal with trying to send someone a different country money and have to pay these ridiculous fees when it's permissionless and decentralized well it's super cheap it's free it's easy and you don't have to like worry about using paypal or something like
these features are really good but they don't care about these other things that people love and preach and stuff in the web three in the in the crypto world and so basically what he's saying is like look if you want to build in the space web 3 users like the users are not going to change right they're still going to look for convenience they're still going to look for great ux and that's i mean one of the things holding back this this entire industry right now so like whatever you're doing if it's an nft if it's a token or something it's gotta it's gotta give value to these people and not just in monetary terms but in utility and fun and engagement and maybe community um or access or whatever it is like it's got to make people's lives better
just the fact that it's decentralized or that they own it doesn't really matter and i mean we're seeing that right now with the whole nft world going down 99 most of that everyone's just like oh but i own this art cool it's like no no one cares and you can see that by being down 99 it's got to have some use to it you know yeah well what was the stat i saw recently there's 20 23 million or 24 million uh nfts on ethereum on the ethereum blockchain and uh 165 23 million collections 106 yeah 23 million collections and 164 of them
are valued at over 1 eth so the the this statement that 99 of nfts would go to zero is essentially true and it's because there's not enough utility there's not enough value right so you nailed it santiago kudos man preach let's create more value i hope this is the right one i got one uh one hilarious tweet here i gotta share so uh greg who is just one of the best [ __ ] posters on twitter jose canseco so if you guys don't know who jose canseco is he was a former professional baseball player
and he tweeted looking for a crypto token developer and greg said hey it's greg dm me jose and i can help and so then jose dm'd hey are you a token dev and greg responded no way jose [Laughter] oh nice greg you know greg got a free tesla from tom brady have you seen this what no i forget what he did um but he bet tom brady that he couldn't forget what it was something about um typing faster i don't know something ridiculous it was the most ridiculous exchange i've seen on twitter ever and i
think it was tom brady and tom brady actually bought him a tesla and sent it to him it was hilarious this guy's a legend greg gosh greg16676935422 [Laughter] he is one of the funniest people on twitter like oh my god he's amazing well that's a wrap folks but jay it was great to have you back on the show we've missed you over here at webster academy good to be back man good to be back thanks for listening everybody and uh yeah get outside exercise do some exercise this weekend 15 minutes it's all that's all you got to do 15 minutes and watch what happens look at your watch wait till that 15 minute point all of a sudden you're gonna be able to exercise way more you're gonna feel way better it's a game changer um but for listeners if you're still listening right now do us a favor go follow us and
