SOTS #43: GitCoin Grants & The Future of ETHStaker

State of the Stake · November 2020 · 9:17

This episode of State of the Stake covers EthStaker's participation in a Gitcoin Grants round and what the funding raised could mean for the project's future. It discusses how quadratic funding from Gitcoin Grants supports community-run public goods like EthStaker's educational and validator support work. The conversation considers how sustained grant funding could shape which initiatives the community prioritizes going forward.

01:00 - Welcome to SOTS #43

[Music] hey everybody i'm superfiz from the east staker community and this is state of the state 43 on march 11th 2021 i should know the year so state of the state is kind of when i sit around and shoot the bull and tell you what's on my mind about the growth and direction of the staking community on the ethereum beacon chain we work hard to represent home and solo stakers but we also um really focus on the health of the beacon chain so we talk about things like client diversity

and decentralization a lot i work with the eath staker core group who are buddha unvetica who produces this lamboshi and worth halter patricia worth halter who you also know from coap so or you might know from poep you might not that's cool too so today i'm kind of excited i just had a talk with my friend colfax colfax is developing a single click installer and one of the things i was supposed to do today is promote the um the eatstaker basket of git coin grants and so i would really like if you took a moment and it made a contribution to the east staker basket of get coin grants

01:55 - Check out the basket of EthStaker GitCoin Grants

i imagine that like any normal person would probably i don't know if this is right or wrong but it sounds like you would donate um one thousandth of your annual income so if you make fifty thousand dollars a year it would make sense to donate fifty dollars to a git coin grant that's just kind of the rule of thumb in my mind just apply that however you want but i don't i don't love talking about grants i don't love that so i wanna talk about something a little different that was spurred by this idea so i was creating a uh a basket of bitcoin grants and in that basket is oh it sounds like i'm talking about get coin grants trust me i'm going somewhere else um was

03:10 - The 4 domains of EthStaker Initiatives

ethereum core uh and i mentioned you know that's buddha on vatica lamboshi and patricio and myself and then the ethereum due diligence committee who is organized by madison asher who runs the ether.io and then steakhouse which is they're developing a single click installer right now and that is under the lead of colfax i want to talk about that more soon and then ethereum studymaster which is run by anvedica and so what we have like are four four domains of e-sticker and it i've realized after speaking to colfax

that we would be a better managed organization if we kind of branched out into those four domains with eaststaker core really just managing the overall community and supporting the community just as we always have but then ethereum studymaster being the education branch of that managed by unvetica and so maybe they continue to develop ethereum studymaster.com maybe they manage the educational quizzes um and so uh maybe that includes trivia i'm not sure but that is our education or our our learning branch would be ethereum studymaster.com and then we have like people who want to

04:24 - STAKEHOUSE as a repository of software products.

contribute as developers like you have skill with um by you know any number of languages any number of talents and you come to eat staker and you're like hey how can i help well colfax is running right now steakhouse and um instead of steakhouse being just this first product which is the single click installer we're kind of envisioning steakhouse as being a repository of different software products that are developed under the east acre umbrella maybe we've provided a grant maybe we've provided support or maybe we've helped to connect you with people or maybe you just want to be a part of our community that's that's great and so those those tools and that

development would take place under uh the steakhouse umbrella and now there are a lot of tools that already exist and we need to know are they valuable tools are they safe for use and that falls under the ethereum due diligence committee which is led by madison asher and right now their focus is vetting staking pools and you've heard me talk a lot about what i look for in staking pools there are four or five kind of beacon features that i'm looking for like open source truly decentralizing the network supporting client diversity giving back to the community more than

06:35 - Ethereum Due Diligence Committee as the vetting body

they take from the community as in not being run by some big conglomerate and one other that's really important that's not on my mind but maybe it'll be in the comments anyway that is um well and so that is me talking about client diversity or talking about staking pools but the ethereum due diligence committee really vets uh those pools for are they safe to use so they may not meet all the fizz's criteria for what i think a healthy pool would look like which is really a high goal and a high bar that i want everyone to reach for is looking for are they going to take good care of your funds are they charging a reasonable fee

are they operating legally are the operators known um things like that that will give you a greater assurance that if you participate with a pool that your money will come back to you safely but i really see that the eddc as kind of the governing body uh or like the vetting body of the the east acre ecosystem and so when they get through these pools and when they begin looking more broadly at the ecosystem maybe they're even vetting tools that steakhouse has created and they're looking they're taking those tools apart and saying um are they right for the community are they um do they have the community's best interest in mind are there back doors are there red flags that should make us

avoid this so these are all this is kind of a new thought for me and i just wanted to get it out there and maybe get some feedback about as east acre grows as we mature what will we become and uh today's thought is that eastaker will become this semi-departmentalized group of community educators and supporters our education branch our development branch and our vetting branch or governance branch so yeah i'm interested to hear your thoughts about uh i haven't done the best at responding to comments but

09:16 - What does EthStaker look like moving forward?

that's something that i intend to get to so if there's something you'd like to ask me shoot in the comments and i will work to get to it um but yeah i'm really interested to hear what you think of this it's one of those things that i get like it's a big deal to me in my head but it's probably not a big deal to anyone else what it means for people at the end of the day is if you want to become an involved and eat staker now we can target you better toward the thing you're interested in doing whether that is developing products whether that's supporting users whether that's educating users or whether that's vetting products through the eddc and i would say right

now the eddc has expressed a significant need for people who are willing to vet products with them um so yeah that's me today and again this came from get coin grants or from discussing bitcoin grants i really uh would encourage you whether or not you invest in whether you support e-stakers grants on get coin please go to get coin please choose one or two grants uh one of the things i've kind of been saying on the down low is it's not actually about the money it's about building the community through small signaling like um even that like the one died donation is

a signal to the people running something that their work is welcome and i really hope that you'll go and dig through the projects and find something that is kind of a diamond in the rough and give them a little bit of encouragement and say hey look i know that no one has seen this but i think it's cool and i hope you keep working on it so yeah um i hope you have a great day and take care we have been what like 38 days on the beacon chain without a slashing pretty exciting the merge is coming more closely uh or coming more quickly than any of us might have guessed so i'm really looking forward to that and we'll talk about in the future take care have a great day
