S4 - Ep. 26 - Onchain Capital Allocation Book W/ Kevin Owocki
10 Jul 2024 · 11:17
Allocating capital at scale is framed as vulnerable to gatekeeping, rival decision-making and weak transparency, with programmable smart contracts offered as a more efficient and transparent alternative. The handbook maps 33 mechanisms, including quadratic funding, conviction voting and assurance contracts, and treats them as focused modules that can be stacked. Its endpoint remains aspirational: practical pluralism, more pro-social allocation and forkable implementations on Allo Protocol that other ecosystems could adapt.

welcome to the green pill. network podcast if you're just joining us we're building a coordination a network Society of thousands of hackers dreamers and doers using crypto to bring positive sum digital systems to the world this podcast features the people who are doing it and we publish a season of about a dozen episodes every couple months this season is all about lean mean Capital allocation machines Capital allocation is the process of deciding how to spend or invest Financial Resources with web 3 we can do more democratic more transparent more scalable more precise more weird Capital allocation than has ever been possible before so how do we build cryptoeconomic systems that precisely allocate capital and do it at scale and do it in a democratic way what are the coolest
experiments these are the season themes for green pill season 4 lean mean Capital allocation machines all right well we are about 22 Episodes into the lean mean Capital allocation machines season of green pill I feel like we've done a lot of interesting craphy of the design space and I really enjoyed this season as we wrap up the season I have a special treat for you I have written a book and it's based off of what I've learned in this season of green pill it's entitled onchain Capital allocation handbook and the subtitle is a practical Journey from present
mechanisms to Future possibilities if you're watching on YouTube then you can see the the book right here it's uh physically in my hand it exists it's not just a meme and uh yeah I mean I've published self-published a handful of books over the last couple years and I I think they've been of varying uh directions and and I'm just really proud of this one I think I've learned a little bit about the form of podcasting and the the form of doing books over the last couple years over 200 episodes of green pill and this is like my fourth self-published book and I feel like we're we're finally getting to a place where I bottle up my knowledge and my discovery of the frontier and decentralize it out to other people and so this is a a book launch episode about
the capital allocation handbook that I am releasing today at ECC so if you're interested in hearing the lessons of the Season being turned into a book you can get them at alow book. gitcoin doco and uh I'll just I'll just read you a little bit about the book so that you you know what you're getting into so this is the back cover of the book Capital allocation is the next Frontier Capital allocation is a simple concept it's the act of deciding how to distribute funding or resources if you've ever paid bills taxes repaid friends for a meal you've allocated capital capital allocation be can be a full-time job governments and Grant making organizations spend vast amounts of time and money figuring out process Logistics
decision making involved in allocating Capital at scale Capital allocation inevitably becomes mirrored in gatekeeping rival decisionmaking lack of transparency and accountability but crypto with its programmable smart contracts presents incredible advantages towards allocating capital in an efficient effective and transparent manner the internet revolutionized how information was distributed in society if crypto succeeds in revolutionizing how Society distributes scarce resources it follows that it will upend and improve How We Do Capital allocation what if we could solve coordination failures with capital allocation what if we could create better more Sovereign Collective action how might we bring centuries old capital allocation
strategies onchain can we invent New onchain Capital allocation strategies that were not possible before ethereum the next Horizon is hard to see alone but by exploring it together we can grasp it this book is a celebration of the design space and is your no hype resource to understanding the emergent pluralistic Ecology of capital allocation developing in the web 3 space I've enjoyed putting this handbook together of the latest and greatest in what's possible and it's my great pleasure to have a front row seat to this movement as a member of gitcoin and the host of green pill My Hope for this book is that I can pay it forward to you all right so that's the back cover of the book really am very happy with how this book came together I was reading it on my couch last night and man just so
much work has gone into the research of this and uh I really hope that bottling it up for you all will enable us as a ecosystem and a community to discover and cartography this design space more effectively than we otherwise would and um you know and this book is just a means to an end for me in that uh I want to get my vision out there I want to get what I've discovered out there but I would just be tickled pink if we were able to create internet economies that reward a pluralism of voices not just one Echo chamber if we could move away from like the mean coin and the degenerate meta and uh like actually allocate Capital to things that matter I I really would love to see practical pluralism and pluralism in general as
the root of an Internet era economy and um this is my way of kind of getting some of those ideas out there and what I would really like to see is that in a couple years or maybe 10 years I always asked guests what would happen if you're maximally successful so uh maybe I'll ask that to myself here but I I what I would really like to see is that people take these strategies and put them into the base of their own onchain economies and we can move from doing ineffective Capital allocation into doing pluralistic uh pro-social effective Capital allocation using these onchain Primitives and the the really cool thing about onchain in open source Financial economies is that someone discovers something like Amin solman
discovering molok da and then all of a sudden there was like springtime for Dows everyone was forking mow and playing out that meta and you know same with quadratic funding same with retroactive publics funding there's this pattern of people inventing something new and cool and then everyone else copying it or forking it and modifying it and it's a decentralized exploration of this design space and I just want to facilitate that and accelerate it and share this Vision uh that I that I have with all of you so anyway uh download the book at alob book.co doco I am uh I've got a free download option I've got a you can order the book for $33.33 there's a little 33 meme in there for for those of you who are skilled at reading between the lines and we're
going to have some sort of nft experience where you can mint it from there so uh if you're listening to this at ECC there is a launch party 711 uh at at 1200 noon at ECC DM me if you want an intro to that on Twitter and uh if you're not at ECC right now you can download the book like I said at alow book. gitcoin doco all right I just want to end by uh rattling off some of the mechanisms that are in the book if you've uh heard of direct grants quadratic funding private quadratic funding streaming quadratic funding retro funding conviction voting request for proposal self-curated Industries delegated domain allocation gift circles evolutionary Grant games Assurance contracts dominant Assurance contracts
social media based Capital allocation direct contract incentives impact attestations Universal basic income cookie jars Community currencies futarchy Angel investment mokal Stockell build Guild streams Source cred nosis safe honor Mutual Aid networks waffs zicat bonding curves revets decentralized validators bounties and hackathons or rank choice is voting then this book is for you so this book is a cartography of 33 different mechanisms that exist out there and what they're good at in creating Capital allocation to the people that serve them each of these mechanisms is good at doing one thing and um you know I think we're kind
of following the Unix philosophy here of having a modular architecture of these little Capital allocation modules that do one thing well but they can be paired with other modules so what happens when we stack these mechanisms on top of each other there's a meta chapter on that so at the end of the book I move away from the actual rote mechanisms and what are they and then I sort of like zoom out into like The Meta of what are we doing here exploring the design space so I The Meta chapters are stacking mechanisms how might we build a taxonomy of mechanisms so basically how do we cartography the space and create a taxonomy of mechanisms how would nature explore this design space I have a chapter or two on that how would slime molds or mushrooms how do they find resources and how can we use that as
inspiration for how we build Capital allocation strategies uh and then I go a little bit more Dow native I've got a chapter on ephemeral Dows and how they can be used to discover the design space the Dow of dows how could we build uh a a movement a mesh network of dows that are all working together in order to explore this design space from there and then there's a chapter on Alo protocol which is getcoins capital allocation protocol if you're just if you're skilled at reading between the lines uh getcoin coin is really going deep into this design space of capital allocation and that's why the protocol is named Alo protocol and uh we talk a little bit at the very end about gitcoin the capital allocation strategy exchange what if gitcoin went from quadratic funding to retroactive funding and actually built
all of these mechanisms on Alo protocol and made them forkable and easily implementable in everyone's apps out there it took getcoin several million dollars to accelerate quadratic funding and build that into our tools and what if you could just Fork getcoin grants and put it into your ecosystem I think that would really accelerate the The Happening of this Vision okay so there's a getcoin chapter or two uh there's a chapter on practical pluralism and why pluralism matters in this design space and then I have a parting thoughts episode which closes out the book so coming in at 260 Pages which may be intimidating but the book is like half pictures if you followed my work in the past you know that I really like adding
some visual Juju alongside the uh the things that I write and so uh the book clocks in at 260 pages and I'm really happy with how it came out I think it's very visually stunning and I think the design space is cool as so uh if you're into it check out alob book.co in.co again it's being released today you can mince an nft you can get a digital copy and you can order a physical copy for $33.33 so that's the green pill episode today we are wrapping up Capital allocation season with a book about Capital allocation that I wrote thanks for listening while you're here download the aloe book at Alo book. gitcoin doco please remember to like rate and review
this podcast episode it really helps other people find the regenerative crypto movement and helps them find my work and the more regen corners of crypto I think are something that we all want to amplify and thanks for tuning into this season it's been a really big pleasure for me to do this season of the green pill podcast and I hope you enjoyed it as well all right see you next time peace and love
