New Official Avalanche Block Explorer (And OP Stack!) with Routescan founder Jack
22 Nov 2023 · 16:31
Recorded at Avalanche House in Istanbul, The Rollup's Andy talks with Jack, founder of Routescan, about the shift toward unified, multichain block explorers. They cover the migration from Snowtrace.io to Snowtrace Multichain, the launch of Superscan and Routescan's own EVM explorer built on the OP Stack, and how Routescan is positioning itself as the Avalanche ecosystem's rollup landscape expands.

man himself what a guy yeah uh we are at the palace of avalanche house today it's quite a Vibe now yeah yeah I'm seeing the view I'm seeing the boss for us here and it's really really quite the view yeah yeah I mean Jack I just steep into Avalanche house and Jack knows everybody all the way up to the founder of avalanche how did you get so involved in the ecosystem oh well the thing is the founders were were intimate friends of of goon since a few years and then when the um when when aanch was um was launching on Main that uh we're like okay we need an you know they were like we need an explor and so we just kind of you know chimed in and you know made the Explorer in two weeks it was a very bad Explorer but you know just you know you
know made the made made the know data work and then so then we had a few months to work on AA scan like version 0.1 for um the test net launch the last test net launch on September something and then on September 20 2021 or 20 um the minute launch and we had you know um the aisan ready with xchain indexing live and then in a few months also C chain and then you know C pchain and so on yep and so you're you're pretty much like an Avalanche OG in the space I mean that that that that defi craze was was wild and I'm just very happy to see Avalanche keeping uh the support I think that this event is going to be one of
the best events of the whole week uh so looking forward to diving more into that for our community who who may be not so familiar about uh what the avisan Explorer is what route scan is what you guys are doing with the L2 space would love a quick brief about what you guys are doing with snow trace and you know kind of the updates there then we can dive into the other side on the uh ethereum side too yeah so basically um aaan is a block Explorer for the Avalanche network is the first world's first unified block Explorer in the sense that you have you know you're used to block explorers being single chain and that means that you you click on it and you have a a website that just shows
you information about one chain but then you know we we had I me goner you know that I just you know we just met and it was saying like from the beginning was saying to us I want aaan to be the place where I when I where I want to see everything that is happening on Avalanches one single place and it was very very vocal about also this this kind of you know details that we still haven't implemented because it's still a long way but like to be able to trace the money from one chain to the other like a seamless flow and that is really really what what is happening on on Ava scan you know you you you you just cannot do everything of the but we have the unified experience so you can go on
the address details you see everything you like KN bank and you can go on transactions list you can see every transaction that be happening across Avalanche all the blocks and all the verified contracts and so on everything is Unified at the back end level so basically you don't have any waiting time this is not any you know more competitional um work for for your computer and for your browser and anything and so this is like really fast and you can see that also on rout scan rout scan is our um is our evm focused product because we would we you know for for Eva scan we had an avalanche Focus product because we have C chain that is evm but we also have achain and pchain that are different from evm so they have you know the uo based models so that is
different so how can we how can we just go out and serve other chains because this is a good indexer a fast and cheap indexer that can serve well the blockchains and so we're like okay we can use the same indexer the same technology that we use on the back end but on the front end we need to still have something something you know different from that and people were very vocal about asking about you know ether scan features and so on because you know ether scan is the leader about this but the thing is ether scan is as we as we saw in the last few weeks ether scan costs a lot of money and so we found out that we actually could provide the same quality of service for a fraction of the cost and and that's what what we did so
we we in in March of this year we started you know surveying blockchains about that and in in six seven months we had the first deal came through and on September 1st we announced indexing of boba Network that that has two rollups one on BNB and one on on ethereum and then shortly after we announced um medis and you know I can you know I need to read I I like to be transparent about this there were some issues with Boba and medis but just because you know there were ethereum l2s and we we weren't ready you know we just you you're not ready until to do it you know you can't prepare you know for for forever and so we had some issues you know ebis about like the interface that
you know we had some to add some new pages or make some like adjustments but right now the satisfaction for my clients is actually you know from what I have we weekly we we we ask our clients what has it been have you have you have any issues but they seem they seem happy so that's what I'm you know satisfaction is a it's an alltime high for our clients outside Avalanche but also inside Avalanche you know um we we continue to serve subnets and and and also we are doubling down on Avalanche because we um this journey out of out of avalanche was just to take also to double down on on aval lunch as well um and and so we we we after we launched the first two explorers we also launched
flare and flare scan and then it was the time that you know with with G and Kevin and also Luigi and everyone else was supposed to happen I was supposed to happen the switch from snow Trace to a new Solution by us um you know it did happen faster than we thought because ether scan announced it you know abruptly on on on on October 30 but we're doing the best we can to to ensure that the the transition is as seamless as possible by November 30 and actually we are we are announ we have announced on our blog post that we are going to transition for on on November 27th so we have three full days to ensure everything is happening smoothly yep
awesome so so uh simultaneously being able to provide really quality services for Avalanche and within the ecosystem and then also expanding kind of the the bounds and the product because you know there there are tons of new Chang coming out you know there's there's just been there's been this thesis recently about like this this 10,000 rollup thesis right where we're going to live in a world of 10,000 rollups and so also rollups aside there's going to be tons of other chains too which which you know could be potentially service with route scan or with super scan or with or with uh AA scan or just whichever kind of scan you decide to create next or or to build so um yeah I'm curious how how do you plan to position for this 10,000
rollup or let's say say you know a million chain chain kind of thesis uh with your with your product Suite um and how do you see it playing out so let me tell you one one one nice thing so we had some discussions internally about the the velocity that we could uh take new clients on and I was very very very rude in saying that we cannot take on new clients or we cannot search from new clients why is that because we have a statement that is really really really like our second value propos position that is we can do an Explorer in less than 5 days and we can Ure that so we can assure you have a Explorer live ready in production in 5 days and then we tell you let's let's let's use it
from one month before we go actually public but we you will have the Explorer live in five days this is something that no other Explorer provider can do no other and so that is basically how we can we can you know help and ser and serve all these 10,000 rollups is that right now we have this five days rule but then we're hoping you know when we had subnets at the big just had subnets actually for avalan subnets we told them that they could be indexed in 24 hours because that is what we can do but you know as we as we go out and you know go from more chains and maybe they're they have more transactions and so on
that is going to be more difficult but we are working on streamlining the process even more and so that you know we're hiring new people and so on so that is faster and cheaper and simpler to actually index I'm I'm I'm just you know my my vision is that maybe in three five years you could just have a subscription for your Explorer just like you do with a another sass like just when you subscribe to fortune or whatever just subscribe with your chain you input your RPC your archive RPC with d bu Trace active and then you're ready to go like really few minutes just pay like a permission was kind of uh able to kind
of have just a ux where people can just jump in and and join if they're launching on a rollup as a service provider or a Ras as they call it so so which kind of Switching gears to the to the rollup World which which uh rollup Service uh rollup as service providers are you speaking to now um and which uh and kind of what's your plan attack with with the op stack so yeah um we you know I personally really like the idea of the optimism Collective you know everything to be transparent everything to be like having to go through a process and so on and and and the thing about you know the plans with the op stack is to actually do the super scan the super scan right
now is a proof of concept because we you know we we we submitted we submitted the the project for the retr BF round three but we need to you know transpar we need to get some money to continue the indexing because that that costs still a lot of money because we index the four base like base chains like op Bas zor mpgm so we need money to you know cover those server costs um and what was the other question again I about the RAS providers oh yeah yeah yeah we're talking to different Ras providers um and you know it's it's really um it's really hard when you when you are like um one one provider and you need to like to more partners and you just want to be
sure that everyone gets treated not specifically in the same way but everyone gets treated the way they need to be treated so like we're talking to gwit you know conwi is focused on the op stack but then also we're talking to gelato to ultr layer and we're trying to understand what are the needs of each each one of them and you know I need to tell you this is hard are you know because for example Al layer has this flash rollups thing yeah so how can we like maybe they they can like Just Launch 2,000 rollups in a day and how can we count for that you know we have we have a solution that is really light on that we call it the davet Explorer on
rout scan so just basically go to davet you input your RPC you can also like uh input that in the in the explicit URL and you can just have a light Explorer with basic transactions and blocks and and and and and basic uh addresses information with the gas balance uh and that is like real um deal for like defit purposes and for flashh purposes but also for just you know just regarding about this we have this delet Explorer from from rousan that is a explorer that you can just input your RPC in the popup that you you will get on on on the website it's on on defet brow scan. or you can just use the implicit explicit
URL um to just have the information from your RPC directly connected with an Explorer and then you have just like basic blocks and transactions and address details with gas balance and and that's it um but we're all so young sorry so um and yeah I can see how with the flash rollups from outlayer it's like how do you uh if these rups can be created and then shut down instantly how do you how do you plan for uh some sort of monthly recurring revenue or like how do you structure your your team and also these these all the rasses are similar like they all have similar offerings but like you said there's like little key differentiators you have to kind of account for uh but you you you you kind of wrapping up that that thought on the
dev net there yeah I no know that that's what exactly what I was you know going at thing is we have some also you know Avalanche has asked us because the Avalanche has a avoc cloud that is a um like a something like a RAB is ass something as a service um program process I don't know and and so maybe they're spinning up I don't know maybe they're spinning up thousands of subnets that we don't even know it and and and padrick um you know VP of engineering was like uh how can we have maybe verified contracts or more features on the devet and we're like you know we need to index those but then I'm like how can we maybe provide a full index Explorer for people that are
just testing or for providers that are just testing so we're we're thinking brainstorming about a way to just get paid once for every try every kind of like uh trial that you want to make you can just spin up 1,000 explorers but that is you know just that is after the no Trace migration so yeah just so just to kind of wrap up here I know you've got a panel upcoming what's the what's the timeline on the snow Trace uh my my migration and kind of how's that looking now so that is looking good um we have we are indexing about six 7% of verified contracts on on snow Trace every day so we should be
finished right now we are about at 25 27% uh of 1.5 million verified contracts so that that's a lot so we will actually like load on to snow on the new snow TR for a few days so you may be able to see degraded performance on the uh soon to be new snow Trace but by November 27 everything's going to be smooth and we're continuously you know everything that we won't have also from for other chains uh we will implement it and the thing is since rout scan is a block Explorer platform it means that you know train developers don't need to pay any upgrade fee because every upgrade that we do is going to be
relayed across all the chains that that will support if your chain supported so if you have like if we make um if we work I don't know with either spot hands uh 4337 account faction standard support and and and all the chains that support exactly that standard will also support that so you see how this is really scalable and scales to thousands of brups and submits let's go thank you brother thank you brother thank you Andy thank you so much thank you pleasure cheers all right
