governance at gitcoin and is now running grants experiments for arbitrum and Umar does data and research at git coin I wanted to have them on the podcast today to talk about the git coin citizens round which was a retroactive public goods funding round that get coin ran in order to fund what matters in its own own ecosystem and so there's some interesting things here in that now that get coin has a its quadratic funding platform is a credibly neutral protocol that anyone can run Chris and Shauna Newmar are basically used git coin on itself so the product of Bitcoin grants is now being used to fund the get coin ecosystem and this is kind of like a
stepwise goal forward in in what Bitcoin wanted to do the last Market cycle Bitcoin grants was used primarily in the ethereum ecosystem and now it's been Rewritten as a decentralized modular protocol that anyone can deploy in their ecosystem so going from funding for the ethereum ecosystem to funding for any evm based ecosystem is kind of like you know ethereum going from the ethereum mainnet to being a modular blockchain is kind of like there's a parallel there in git coin going from a monolith a centralized monolith to being a modular tool set that anyone can for can use in their own ecosystem so we just kind of talk about the retroactive Qs citizens around why it's important to fund your ecosystems public goods and what was the
result of the first round on this episode and then we talk about what the future of Bitcoin citizens round is going to look like so I think this is a fun episode if you're into public goods funding if you're into Bitcoin uh and if you're into the regen ecosystem and you want to bring public goods funding to your Dow you might want to copy what the get coin citizens did one final note before we get into the show is that I am known as a founder of get coin but as of July of 2022 I have disabiliated from leadership at Bitcoin and am now just a fanboy of them like many others in the ecosystem so I still hold GTC I still use Bitcoin grants but in this episode I am playing podcast co-host oh and so um just really
excited to talk about the citizens round and to chart the evolution of Bitcoin over time so without further Ado I give you Chris Sean and Umar enjoy Valley Dao is an open Global Collective working to finance and democratize the governance of synthetic biology Technologies to protect the future of our planet research and progress into synthetic biology is critically constrained by the world of nation-state regulations and bureaucracy from middlemen but the potential that synthetic biology has for the world is massive it can produce a world in total harmony with nature we can grow stuff using cells like software it's awesome and the best part is we no longer have to pull carbon out of the ground to grow and maintain civilization don't you think we should be funding this Valley Dow does and that's what
they're here to do to try and make the solar Punk World of Tomorrow a reality today so join Valley Dao right now and save the planet at valleydow.bio what's up y'all welcome hello good to be here great to have you all right so tell me about the retroactive Qs qf citizens round how does it work Chris we'll go to you first yes so we ran uh the first get going citizens round uh a little while back in June and so the citizens rounds uh are actually really meant to reward people and projects Grassroots projects that have contributed to get coin success in the past at least right now it's we've been focusing on retro retroactive rewarding of people so
um yeah what does that mean like we have been using the umbrella term like Bitcoin Community engagement very specifically it means like everyone who has supported Bitcoin uh course ecosystem with educational content with promotional content data analysis support initiatives you name it like anything that makes Bitcoin more successful at achieving its Mission and the community at reaching its owners its audience and we want to reward those people so that's how it started and that's why we decided to allocate 20 000 die in matching pool funding for this first round and so that that was the first round which was a fully
retroactive funding round showcasing uh what people did in the past so uh yeah so that that is a in a nutshell with the citizen strand is about could we dive in on retroactive funding I know that that's been something that vitalik has blogged about and optimism does retractive public goods funding what's the difference between retroactive and other types of public goods funding I'm happy to jump in on this one because it was like it was a bit of a debate you know I think there was it was like back in February we were all in Boulder hometown sure walking over here um and uh at one of the good Queen Retreats you were talking about you know there's a lot of bugs in this product it's still pretty new this new decentralized Grant stack aloe protocol
we're not having the best time and we need to figure out how to actually like make this product better and one of the best ways to do that is to just dog food it to just use it ourselves and like buy dog fooding it and using it ourselves can we learn some lessons that then help us make better use of it that improve it so that when we give it to the next person they're having a good time and the thing that we we always tell people is like you can use quadratic funding to fund your community and and build itself and so we started asking ourselves can we use quadratic funding to fund our community and build ourselves and bring back this meme that used to be used to be president of Bitcoin building Bitcoin um and so that started coming up as a
conversation point and there was this really big discussion I remember in this giant you know room we were all sitting around in a circle me Sean Chris and the person who started it was our VP of engineer and Kevin Olsen who said like guys we need to be dog fooding our product way more and we were talking about how do we do that how do we experiment with it in order to make sure it works and since optimism was like picking up a lot at this time with uh retro pgf really gaining a lot of like momentum and just being talked about more I think this was like right around RPG F2 maybe so um it seemed like this really great mechanism for understanding where value was already being created and then rewarding it there and so like we
thought what if we do this for our Bitcoin citizens because we had so many people in our ecosystem who are already creating value like we just saw like John Ruth and our Discord talking to people answering their questions giving them support you know their Carlos was making videos on how do you donate to get coin you know the product sucks so there needs to be a video on how to use it at that time sorry it didn't suck but it needed a lot of improvement um and and so like you know the those kinds of things really help so like Carl cervone was just like you know people were just doing these things Carl was creating data dashboards doing analysis on the impact of our grantees and we needed the dog food and we wanted to reward the community members who were
doing things like this and give them an incentive to just continue doing that sort of thing so it just kind of very naturally came about that you know maybe we can get two birds with one stone here dog Twitter protocol help our community and incentivize the type of behavior we want to continue to see yeah and it's actually very much you know also it's it's the Darwin as as a Dao we are still struggling and I think all the hours are Dowing is hard um but when I started at the out at the Dow like two years ago like it was it's always been beautiful to me to see people just coming in and being like hey how can I help what can I do being of service and we never had this mechanism of just being like hey we see you
like what we've done in the past is like hey we'll just like send those people some some tokens and some people were like yoloing this but there was I we weren't really using this in like a consistent way and like with this program with the retroactive funding that we can use on our very own program we can actually incentivize this and it's it's bringing back the spirit that that Omar mentioned and and it feels like we've succeeded with this first round and this is just the beginning China wondering how uh this fits in on your side so you're the get coin governance guy um and I know you're into solving governance how does this fit into your passion so it's interesting um the first pass of like going super deep into Dow
governance is like how do we make decisions but um when I volunteered to kind of help run this round it was because I wanted to understand really the git coin product right now I wanted to understand the ins and outs of it as I got into it I began to realize that grants is basically how web3 is growing and building itself and building its ecosystem so we spend a ton of time in the Dallas talking about what decisions we should make and what how are we going to make those decisions do we have the right people in the room to make the decisions but a lot a lot of times we spend looking at how we're making grants and how we're executing those grants and what the ROI is on those grants and that's when it began to dawn on me is like we spend a ton of time in the Dow
thinking about governance but really where a lot of the money and where you're allocating a huge amount of resources to direct work is in Grants and so for me it was I I hate to say it was kind of the light bulb going this is a huge area of governance that is kind of underserved and we have not been doing it well across the Dow ecosystem and we got to do a whole lot better on this so it was kind of like an aha moment like okay governance is a whole lot broader than I thought it was and it was through this experience I'm like okay there's a lot of huge problems in here that need to be resolved and somebody's got to sell them take a lead on this and this is where I appreciate being able to participate in this to see how the system works the
problems that we're experiencing and the problems that need to be solved I mean I it feels to me like there's a spectrum between Dow governance and capital allocation to an ecosystem I mean after all one of the biggest governance questions you have is capital allocation to an ecosystem and what if we could evolve from just voting on proposals and work streams to like a more fluid Community Driven Democratic way of allocating capital and maybe just maybe it's not evolved from too but it's it's like a yes and I I predict in the future that Dallas will have multiple ways of allocating Capital that are designed to do one thing and do them well and select the work stream budgets in the citizens rounds will be
complementary to each other optimism does Mission and intense which I think is really good and so yeah you're welcome to respond to that take it's interesting in that component there is like there is not one right way to do this Capital allocation there is not one right way to do governance but we know a lot of ways that aren't working today right and I think that's the key point that we need to recognize is that these experience are all brand new we're all trying to figure out the right way to do it and the interesting thing to me is like what experiments can we try and using the architectures that we have in place today like Bitcoin right what other types of experiments can we use uh these platforms we have today to play with capital allocation and I mean if you think about it if we get a 10 bump
or 10 Improvement on how much money that we're spending on these grants that's huge that's I mean how many tens of projects can we fund if we're just more efficient in how we do this right now grants oftentimes feel like hey there's a big pile of money let's try and give this pile of money away as fast as we can and we're not thinking enough about what's the result what are we getting out of this now I know that there's going to be conversations about you have to allow for the making Merchant ideas to get there but at the same time we also have to be paying attention to what are we getting out of all this spend and is that the most efficient spend that we can possibly make yeah I I wanted to add to this uh the need like the other thing that that shot
already mentioned is like we we have we actually got the funding to do this ourselves through a gcp I get so this is a get coin governance proposal and that is that on other allocation mechanism that is also not perfect just yet there's a lot to learn here um and it's but it can indeed be totally complementary and it is indeed so much of experimenting that we're doing like we mess up a good coin I think like in when when this is being recorded like we have seen quite some proof of this this week like we mess up we're just like humans um like discovering a new way of yeah using technology allocated Capital making decentralized decisions
um and the allocating Capital thing like um it's a very silly thing but um I think it's good to remind also like our protocol on which we are building like is aloe protocol it's very silly but I never read the original post and it took a while for me to make that very silly click that it's aloe it's about allocation and so that's what we're trying to do and it's a protocol on top of which we are experimenting and and that is very exciting in that in the allocation space it's really also cool to just like dial deeper on do you have to ask for permission before you start beginning some piece of work and ask for funding or can you just kind of start doing it and then as people
find it valuable um keep keep going and I feel like you know with with gcps with quadratic funding with retro funding and with budgets for work streams like it really is you know like like you said a Waki like complimentary like there needs to be some of all of these and what what I want to know though is like what starts to Bubble Up out of the ecosystem if you tell people you can work on whatever you want and if other people find it valuable if anyone in the community finds it valuable they'll be able to make that clear they'll be able to sort of put their voice out into the ether and say like I find this valuable by voting for you in qf and then you'll be able to get a larger sum of funding
because there are more people who find that valuable and then just like seeing what happens what do people start working on you know like the first round it's exciting to see this and what's what's really exciting is to see like what happens in the next round and the next round and like what what do people keep building on there's gg18 obviously happening like right now so it'll be good to see like how do people help this round be successful and afterward um but also like uh you know Milwaukee you were one of the Bitcoin citizens in the surrounds who received votes and funding um you did you sent it all back to the matching pool um but I'm I'm wondering just like what was your experience like in the round and
and uh what kind of things would you hope for citizens to build one of the sort of interesting things about me is that I'm an Insider Outsider or an outsider Insider when it comes to bitcoin because um you know I found a good coin six years ago but when the Dow needed to decentralize a decentralized myself in past the torch in in no longer in leadership um and and so like I have all these relationships uh in the in building super modular which is the Venture studio built in in the regen ecosystem but like I say get coin hyper certs and optimism or like the ecosystems that we're building the most and like one of the things that I always try to think of is like if I'm if if I wasn't like the
founder of Bitcoin and I wasn't didn't have all these relationships within it if I was just the median person who was into the mission and had like skills to bring to the table in what ways could I bring those things to the table like if I wasn't an Insider Outsider Outsider Insider like if I was just an outsider would I be able to contribute to the mission and and so I think that that's the primary valence in which I participated in the citizen round is um you know how how would I be pulled into the regen ecosystems orbit and be able to stay there and still pay my bills if I was if I was an everyday person and so that's the sort of like user Persona that I try to to do and then um and then I break the veil of that
when I I'm like hey guys the product just doesn't work here and I'll put it into the support request and then the customer support people are like Oh Hey Kevin good to hear from you again um we'll tell the product team so you know it's just dog fooding um and and through the years I get coin we've always dog food our products in fact many of the people who are on on the Bitcoin dial now uh were brought in through like Bitcoin bounties or hackathons or like moonshot Collective which are is like a side effect of of dog food in the product so um just creating this cycle where people like a coin have uh empathy for their users because they are the users so the product I think is is a is another cycle I was trying to build there but um yeah it was it was great to raise some money
and to just send it back to the matching pool as an exercise in in dog fooding and hopefully over time the good coin ecosystem it what we want for ecosystems that use bitcoin's products as far as I understand is that you have one round and then people start to realize oh there's funding for contributing in bitcoin's ecosystem and that changes their behavior and then there's another round and then that reinforces their behavior because they get more funding and then the Cycles just sort of uh spirals upwards from there and no one has to get hired no one has to do an interview with Kyle the executive director of the Bitcoin foundation for a full-time role they could just contribute value and get rewarded for that value I think is like is is my goal so yeah and you're welcome to respond to
that yeah I actually we had a great conversation I remember two years ago um I exactly remember where we were even sitting on the ground and I was telling you about this idea of like hey as a steward as a get going Steward I I would love to do these this and that thing I want to allocate part of my time on doing this and that and that and that um but I want to have the freedom within the dial to really bring the value that I want to bring but I'm kind of restricted by the role that I currently have and we all are and that is that goes Way Beyond Bitcoin as well so I really like love that point that you're making there well how how can we get to a future that we could actually all do this and people
just see the value that you bring um because we all get bogged down in in the systems and the structures um and the procedures and the roles that we need to fill um and we should go where our energy is and that's that's of course like a utopian Vision um we won't be there tomorrow but like I think experiments like this especially like the retroactive part of it to to come back to that point can help us do this because you bring the value first you show what you got and then you actually get rewarded for it and I think it's a beautiful mechanism that that we should really continue focusing on I think what you hit there is an interesting point is that we do have to have that balance right because it's expensive to be in a Dao right it's like it is and not everybody can afford to do
it and we are missing out on a tremendous amount of resources because it's so damn hard to get in and it's so darn expensive to give away three months worth of work or intern for three months and and and when you need to pay your bills right and so I think having that multiple mechanisms to reward people or to show that there is a pathway is important and Chris what I love about what you're saying is I'm gonna bring my passion I'm gonna work on what I think is important but at the same time temper that with yeah but are you adding value and do the community does the community think you're adding value we need this to be a super quick cycle so that I can spend you know a couple hours couple three four hours maybe a day or two working on something and find out that you know
nobody cares okay I'm gonna stop that even though I want to do it No One's Gonna nobody I can't get rewarded for it let me go find something that I can get rewarded on and if it's still my passion area I might still decide to go do it because it's my passion area and it's okay if I don't get paid for it but like increasing that cycle of being able to turn my energy and effort into something I can pay my bills with and getting the feedback that nah it's not really adding value that's important and that's where I think the mixture between retroactive and proactive funding is something we're always going to have to strive for we just need to increase those cycle times and give that be better at providing that feedback on what makes sense what's adding value and what's not adding value
to the network yeah I think I think that's a great point that like what does the network and the community actually what is their response to what you are doing and I think that is the magic of what for me what Bitcoin can actually bring to the world it is you see where the community signal is it really like it cuts through the noise and it shows the community actually wants to allocate funding to what you do whether it's retroactively or not and like the more that is the power of community like one person can maybe have an opinion on this but if an entire group of people is saying like this is valuable then you could continue doing this and and there
is something there uh that's what has attracted me to get coin in the in the first place because it actually um it actually incentivizes long-term thinking uh the short-term gain can be very clear to people but a community needs a little bit of time to you need time to Rally the community and the community needs some time to actually see where the value is going and and that's that's that thing that git coin does that's that's quadratic funding um yeah and I really like what we can do there but again indeed this is not just Bitcoin there's a whole lot of experiments in this community and and it's a combination of a lot of things Chris one of the cool things we saw too with this round was like
um there were already so many people that were doing like good things for us already like just you know John Carlos Carl and like this sort of stepped into the to amplify their efforts and and Inspire more but but also like you know it starts the cycle but the great thing is in any Community with life and Juice there's like already people doing good things that should be getting rewarded all right Chris can you tell us a little bit more about the results of this current round yes this was actually um the most successful round to date um and I hope by the time this Gap up gets published we're already totally
beaten of course but this is the first round that we did on optimism and so if you look in when I say more successful it was a most successful in terms of funding versus the matching so we did a quadrupling of the matching funds in donations we gave 20 000 in matching pool and we got more than eighty thousand dollars in die from crowd Sunday we had uh 50k uh contributions 17K unique contribution contributors and so in total we had like 100k going to to grantees and this was this completely blew our this out of the water and this was way more than what we expected um and and that was great to see so it
it really shows for me two things it is that people really value Community uh and of course also um yeah that effect of like lowering gas fees has a big impact and um we'll we'll go into this in a second but um I still wanted to say like on on the success um what made it such a success for me as well is what we already touched upon is that regard um such great energy back from the people so we have this telegram Group which is like a grand season and we just like got like daily messages of gratitude from everyone because they were so surprised I was like I was just doing this and I just got like 2 000 already in direct donations even apart
from matching funding so everyone was just like so surprised and and even emotional from like hey I'm just doing this because I think this matters and now you're just like rewarding me with like actual money so this was just like beautiful to see and very inspiring for us and we saw so we have been like using the Twitter account at Bitcoin citizens which was just like gifted to us basically from get point we like renamed it to ad Bitcoin citizens as the old Bitcoin Dao account and uh yeah we also saw like a big spike in in traffic we saw so many like retweets and and and responses to all of this so once people started to understand what this get quite citizens
thing was about um yeah they got really enthusiastic and that's why I really believe that this next round has got to be even way more successful because now people know now they know like hey if I do something for the git going ecosystem uh if I just like get some people together and I explain them how to use metamask how to do donations why it is quadratic funding thing matters and what it actually is I can get rewarded for it and right now we're just living burglar people still need some monetary rewards for the things that they do and we want to give them this one so like I I think it was a success and I think we can get way bigger even so that's that is a tldr if
I think about kind of the work that we did here it was a complete surprise that we did so well but the real power of this in my mind is like we ran this on the self-service round which means we didn't ask anybody's permission to run around we just did it and anybody can do that so if anybody is in a community today and you've got your nft Dao and you've got you know 2 000 rabid fans that are just giving away their time just because they love this thing we took a small seed amount of money and four you know forexed it um to deliver a huge amount of benefit to the community so if you're in that Community you want to find a way to reward somebody you don't have to ask anybody just go grab and own your own instance of this self-service get coin
rather run it on your own and see see if your community is as rabid as ours because I'm sure there's a lot of communities out there that could use a tool like this uh we got some stats I think to share too like we were expecting to get 20 people participating in the roundness grantees and maybe like 200 people donating and in the end we got 60 applications and uh 17 000 unique contributors uh to Landing to the round so it was like every expert it's pretty crazy blowing out of the water and we heard I mean we're getting into this thing there was there was there was some like I'll say pockets of resistance saying you know we tried that before it doesn't really work I'm not sure this is gonna I mean it's gonna be a fun
experiment but okay let's see what happens I mean I had really low expectations and this thing just blew my mind at how well it worked yeah and then and then maybe what we do want to also get into of course is as I mentioned like this is the first round with like our new decentralized platform on optimism this had some secondary consequences that we we need to be real about um we had a lot of um airdraw Farmers come come over and visit us so like when we when we now talk a little bit about like the Civil attack thing of it like first of all the question is of course were we civil attacked what is a civil attack and does it count in this context we had a lot of interesting discussions uh with the
three of us on this so um or maybe like you can go a little bit in into these results and what we learned from this yes absolutely um I think these results were pretty surprising um so so you know just kind of with that expectation in mind that we expected like yeah 200 people to donate and we received 17 000. I'm just looking at that number first you know you're like wow amazing um people really love this but then you're also kind of like really do people really really love this that much and also how are they even hearing about it how do they know it's happening and so like things were suspicious pretty much immediately and we wanted to dive into like how many of these users are real
um and you know one of the things we found while looking at the data you can very simply just like look at what else have people done on chain which is exactly one of the things kitcoin passport is excellent at doing um and one of the things we found is that there are a lot of signals that these wallets are associated with airdrop farmer activity that they like to you know mint everything they can they like to bridge to all the chains that they can um and they are really um farming for airdrops and it makes sense too I think because like if you hear Bitcoin optimism first ever retroactive quadratic funding round you might think you could have some expectation for future reward uh so in some ways this this was definitely you know a place
where airdrop Farmers flock to and that affected the results the grantees who you know I mentioned earlier who sort of inspired this round uh John Carlos Carl many others like uh Ivan with his Dune dashboard um they didn't necessarily end up doing the best in the route instead some other organizations that we didn't expect it the number one recipient was in order to say an organization uh that I hadn't even known about before this round began and it was really interesting to see them do so well um and sort of as like while we're digging into the results it became clear like a lot of these voters are probably here as
airdrop Farmers a good portion of them are Bots that are attacking and in order to really have good quadratic funding results we need to be able to descend from them and so it was really really nice to see get coin passport did um a a good job at defending from keeping a lot of people out and keeping a lot of people in Bots out um with a high score of 20 you know a lot of negative activity was kept out of the the round and it was also a nice test bet to see how are some people able to still get in and can we identify who they are how they're getting in and then use that to prevent them from getting in for the next really big round um there were there were a lot of things that like kind of like just like testing
out this round um and are helping us improve our processes for allowance to come like between the beta and the citizens around I think it's it's really allowed us to automate a lot more at the Civil dissection and I think that's really just going to continue to be useful for GGA 10 and Beyond um we had we had like a 50 right Umar in airdrop farmers at least 50 days yeah the hard thing is like you can't really know how many of them are airdrop Farmers for sure one of the sort of interesting things I think about this problem is that you know having studied a lot of protocols and ecosystems some of the like the the like the there's this thing called fragility which is basically like a system it's a
shock event and does it collapse or does it stay the same but does it does it does it get hurt and then it and then respond back and and go back to an equilibrium or does it get stronger and one of the things I think that is the coolest thing about airdrop farmers and civil attackers on git coin is the way because the minimum donation is a dollar they have to basically contribute to public goods in order to attack the system so it's almost like there's this move in like Jiu Jitsu uh or karate of like using your opponent's momentum against them and one of the things I think is interesting is that um is that there's a huge data problem and and and architecture problem with
preventing fraud preventing civil attacks uh preventing airdrop Farmers from from moving the matching funds around too much but what I think is cool is that in order to even be at the table to have to fund public goods and there's sort of an interesting system design attribute there that uh I wonder how much airdrop Farmers actually funded the get coin ecosystem public goods by trying to attack the mechanism question like I have there for you then Kevin and we we briefly already talked about this is um are there other ways to benefit from these airdrop Farmers that are indeed just gonna fire um how can we um use this money um but avoid that the signal gets distorted because we indeed like we got
a message just today from one of our members who was like I'm actually sad and I regret that I contributed um that I did actually took part in this as a grantee because this I do so much and this is what I'm getting back this is not okay and he is totally right so like how can we how can we have a situation that the signal is not distorted um I've heard talk about like okay maybe we can have like uh the matching funding as a Honeypot and actually like you get you could get potential future airdrops if you contribute to the matching funding but how can we do this so like just like wondering if you have any thoughts on this how can we improve the signal yeah I mean I think the most important
thing is that the people who are civil attacking or airdrop farming don't actually move the funds around too much and I'm really excited about Joel Miller and cluster mapping as a mechanism to prevent civil attacks in the future uh maybe not worth it going too far into the uh what that is on this on this episode but we actually did a green color episode with Joe Joe Miller uh episode number 109 Next Generation quadratic funding with Joel Miller for people who are interested in in learning more about that I think Joel is uh I was chatting with him a little bit earlier he's he's gonna hopefully try and test out what some of these different qf mechanisms look like on the citizens around data and see what the results uh may be in other
yeah I know that that mechanism is in the works I think the jokes submitted it gcp a get coin uh Community proposal to make it work well I think that we're getting towards the last 10 minutes of the episode so maybe I will start uh talking about the future and we can wrap up from there so can you tell me about the next Quinn citizens round the next experiment here and I'm really excited to learn about the next one because I feel like ecosystem building is about creating lines not dots it's about like the general Trend and I think each qf round is is building this flywheel where ecosystem public goods get funded then that increases ecosystem utility and then hopefully increases the treasury that will go into the next like this is
a flywheel that's being generated here so all that's to say is when's the next round coming what's the plans in the future um so we are going to announce the exact date very very soon might already be announced by the time this podcast comes out um what we're gonna do first is we want to I still share some more Lessons Learned both with the team we've been like in touch we are in this privileged position to be in touch non-stop with um the the product team so a big shout out also to Meg for for listening to all the feedback that we've been giving um and many others on the team as well for that that matter um and so we want to like continue sharing this information uh digesting um what we can do better how the product
can be improved with the things that we've learned um and then also see like okay we had the questions about uh everything that has to do with eligibility criteria it was really tough for us to sometimes see like okay and and I I know every round operator struggles with this um but for us specifically um I think what we already like kind of in agreement on is that we want to focus on uh people alone so no more projects but just like people um so this is about the Bitcoin citizen so that's one thing that we are going to change change but more is coming we're going to have these discussions in the coming weeks and then in September we are going to open up the applications we're going to review all the applications and then normally the Run
round will run in October um so important in that context is we it starts now it starts today basically because right now we have gg18 and we are watching we are definitely listening and seeing what other people are doing and we will start on our channels also promote and ask people like hey what are you doing how how can we help you to help so that's basically uh when it starts that is today so on that note um what we're also going to do is we are going when you go to like at Bitcoin citizens on Twitter we will be pinning a thread there um with things that people see so if you see something say something if you see someone who does something beautiful in
the entire ecosystem just like like you know flag them praise them and then we know the moment that the application start that we can actually contact them and hopefully they will already be aware of the rare so that that is definitely the call to action thanks Sean we wear anything to add there yeah I'll add one more thing which is uh one definitely super excited for more versions of these Bitcoin citizens round and please get involved with the one coming up in October uh applications September and the other thing that's kind of like really cool I think is you know this round really like highlighted for me how important it is perhaps just like robust civil resistance and great data science and data analysis for Bitcoin um and we already have a lot of members
in our community who are doing data science and data analysis and so one of the ideas that's currently coming up is what if we run a retroactive quadratic funding ground for data science and Analysis for Bitcoin for things like simple defense what kind of things would people come up with what would they do uh and I'm really excited to to hopefully kick that off uh in the process of putting together a proposal right now uh and getting it on the governance forum and so like if you're listening to this and you're someone who does uh data science or data analysis or if you're interested in civil defense keep an eye on the governance Forum maybe by the time this episode airs will even have that proposal up um but yeah excited to just create more
avenues for people to get involved and see how git coin can build itself Sean anything you want to add no I'm good these guys nailed it already well uh we're getting to the back five minutes of the episode and so I'll just ask you all an extremely open-ended question is there anything I didn't ask that you want to say and Chris maybe we'll start with you since I know you're you're good at improving yeah so there there's a few things uh well first thing that I definitely still wanted to mention is we have currently funding um with like the current market situation we have funding for this round too um but we have been dreaming about more citizen shrines as well and so this is
this is something that we just like see that that the community likes and that is very beneficial for the entire ecosystem so we are seriously considering to ask for more funding um and I would say like you know um we've seen we've seen in the past few days um a lot of anger and frustration and about like where git coin has made mistakes and to be honest like it is and then this is just um an evolution in our society and there's a lot of polarization right now there's a lot of negativity this is not just like has nothing to do with Bitcoin
this is the technology that we are using that is actually being used against us and so you know if you you can put it as you know anger or hate versus love or scarcity versus abundance um I really want us to have a soberpunk future I believe the citizens round can contribute to this even if it's just like a small part um so I hope I hope we can continue doing this because I really do believe that humans are meant to thrive and um technology is there to help us with this so that is my wish that's what I hope that we will work towards so I am putting it out there in the universe and manifesting that there will be endless
citizens rounds and that this is just the beginning this is this this was an experiment and right and I think that with it it did way better than any of us thought it would but I think it also LEDs Credence to the fact that we do need to experiment we do need to experiment experiment more we do need to push the boundaries wherever we can and I think this is a good Avenue a low risk Avenue for trying to do that so one of the things I appreciate you about this group is hey I have an idea let's try it and we can and it's okay if we give a shot at something and it doesn't work out and it's great if we give something that does tremendously so what I appreciate about this this Avenue Avenue is like we're pushing the boundaries on what we
can do and we'll continue to do that so that's what I really appreciate about this experiment on the note of appreciation I'll just putting in some appreciation for everyone who helped make this like round possible uh so like definitely first just thank you to the partners in crime Sean and Chris were like coming along on this journey and helping make all of this happen and really excited to see it continue to go forward um and also like big shout out to everyone at Bitcoin who helped make this happen uh you know Matilda was really huge at M M for just like helping us with comms um big shout outs to Meg at Grant stack uh for helping make this possible Ben Connor for their advice um and yeah you know excited to see
almost like an ooda Loop of our own between continued Bitcoin citizens around in the main program it's also like a a b cycle where it's like you know a is the main event but in the B you learn so many little things that end up being helpful for a later on and you could kind of run these riskier experiments and and see how they play back into it um with like civil defense but also you know one of the things that happened this round was like Sean came up with this great review system for us on how do we actually like look at grantees and that ended up playing back into gg-18 where we reused some of that scene format um and so you know just kind of like sometimes little things like that too can aggregate because we have faster cycles and it's cool to see feedback
happening well thank you thank you all so much for joining the podcast one last uh question and just to warn you this will be a hard ball or public goods good yes all the goods are good all right it's going to get you on record on that one well thanks again for joining the green pill podcast y'all really excited about how bitcoin's dog fooding itself and running this qf round and just excited that anyone who's out there can run their own qf rounds on bitcoin so uh there's a link in the show notes you can check out the review of the coin citizens round if you're interested in that and you could also get a link to manager.getcoin.com in the show notes which is where you can go create a quadratic funding round in your own doubt in your own ecosystem from
