Well, um, basically I'm going to talk about this article called Geeks, Mops, and Sociopaths, the evolution of subcultures. It's an article which is online on a blog called Meaningness by the contemporary philosopher David Chapman. David Chapman is a very interesting uh individual. He has a very interesting mix of being, you know, he has a PhD in AI science. He is also a philosopher. He's developing his own line of thought in philosophy. He is super into technology, culture and he's really interested in uh the meaning how we produce meaning what in the

contemporary world and how we understand purpose nowadays. So I find this article to all around you know David Chapman's line of thought to be very interesting to understand uh where are we standing as a subculture in the blockchain because his work uh is is about you know he's analyzing how the the birth and death of subcultures.

So you know the title of this presentation how to win the culture game by being slightly evil. Uh it's a little bit I like David Chapman also because he he likes the shock value. Uh so yeah that's a little bit about David Chapman. Next slide. So a little bit about me now. My name is Santiago Petrucielo. Uh I have studied cinema direction. I worked as a cinema post producer for quite some years. I I colorized many ads, uh music videos, long and short form uh movies.

But most importantly I'm for the past four years or so I've been known in web 3 as bulls. Uh I'm the founder of a collective of artists called neutral arts. Alongside neutral arts we have on boarded to our artist collective more than 300 artists. It's a very active collective of 40s. We produce more than six uh no we produce six exhibitions art exhibitions. We produce odd residencies. We made a lot of online workshops with uh you know oriented to about different techniques. Uh we ate a lot of asado. A lot of asado. We really care about IRL.

Uh many of those asad were at my house. I really enjoy the company of artists. So that's yeah a little bit about me. Today we are hosting with neutro and alongside Wabit the creator economy this whole day. Thank you so much for inviting me. So going back to the David Chapan article, you know the the question this article rises is why does subcultures die or what's the vibe die? Subcultures, you know, you all know subcultures. Hippies were a subculture, Pangrock was a subculture, a music genre, a religious faith can be a

subculture, a political theory can be a subculture. Onchain art is a subculture which is my what's what I am interested uh in. So he notices that for many decades subcultures were really important and impactful and really really relevant to people's lives. People found a lot of meaning in subcultures and the subculture way of life. But in the early 2000s, subcultures started to pretty much disappear.

So he studies this this this phenomenon uh and he starts to wonder why why this this happened. So he found he finds out you know uh that he can identify three key players in the life and death of subcultures. You have the geeks who are the ones who are obsessed with the new thing the new cool thing. You have the mops who are the ones who are obsessed with the experience and then you have the sociopaths the ones who are obsessed with the extraction. I will go briefly one by one explaining a little bit who these key players are in the life and

death of subcultures. Uh and hopefully by the end of this presentation we will understand a little bit more uh about our subculture and what's happening with our subculture uh in the blockchain. So first you have the gigs. That's a geek. you know, artists are part of the gigs and this is also a gig. That's me. Yesterday I was invited by the organization to create a series of screens. Uh basically before there is a subculture you have creators creators creators are the ones who produce the new thing. Again it can be a music general. It can be you know people who

is developing blockchain technology for example. It can be a new artistic technique. It can be many things. But it's basically people generating positive energy by rifing off each other. So eventually these creators attract fanatics. Fanatics which is this other group uh which I feel identified with uh are people who they do not create like creators do but they do collaborate uh with their energy. It can be in the shape of time. It can be money, resources. It can be uh organization analysis. Fanatics are the one who throw events. Fanatics are the ones who deal with accountants. Fanatics are the ones

who build websites and basically do all the things that are not strictly related with creating. In this case, for example, talking about chain art, the art pieces. So when you have the creators and then you have the fanatics, you have the geeks. These both groups of these two groups of people they create the geek scene. So you have a scene now you have creators and fanatics. What happens is if the scene is too geeky, it will remain just like a weird little hobby.

But if the scene is sufficiently interesting and and there is not like a lot of friction for uh normal people so to speak to enter into the scene it will attract mops. Mops basically are the mass uh it's the mass consumers. Uh mops they are interested not so much in the intricacies behind you know the the complexities and the lore of the new cool thing. They are actually more interested in the final product, in the experience. They like to consume it. Uh and they like to feel like they are a part of the geeks.

Um and actually you know that the inflow of mops is a positive thing. It's the mops who bring new energy. It's the mobs who bring scale. It's the mobs who bring uh actual you know liquidity. Uh and this is very very healthy for the scene. This is the a way in which you know the creators some creators can start to go bro you know they can start to make a living out of this. Same for the fanatics. Many fanatics can uh you know uh start making a living out of doing the thing they love. So everything is nice everything is fun on games. Uh but you know it's the ratio is very important. What many times happen is

that mops start to uh outnumber the geeks by a mile and when that happens a series of consequences uh come one after the other. The subculture starts to get, you know, the cool thing starts to get a little bit more diluted like a light version of it. The mops is like they like the new thing but they like the new things that are more like old things that they can relate to. They don't like it like really super geeky. Um, and this and because of the mass adoption so to speak which actually is the key to bring a scene into a subculture is the mass of

the mops. Uh because it gets too noisy. It it generates the creators to step back. You know, they prefer like a more calmer, not so noisy environment. They want to go back to their geeky thing. And it also happens with the fanatics that they start to feel burnt out. They start to work a lot and it gets very complex and it gets very intense and they realize that the best uh output is the mops who are getting it in a passive way. They are consuming the output and the fanatics are putting all the effort so they end up you know burning out. So what happens is you know when they have

you have these two actors the gigs you know the creators and the fanatics retracting because they are old number by the mobs um at this stage the subculture will probably implode except if the sociopaths show up which are the the third uh key uh actor So sociopaths they act absolutely in selfinest uh they do not care really about the geeks neither the mops they see them as resources and actually sociopaths are very skilled in the one thing that the

gigs are very very bad at which is understanding how to extract money from the mops. Uh so they are really burnable you know the the gigs against the the sociopaths. So basically the sociopaths realize there is a vacuum in leadership and in power because the geeks are retreating because they feel you know outnumbered and you know uh overwhelmed by the mops and they you know go to bed with the best of the mops and start extracting all the liquidity and the value and eventually the mops realize uh that the value has been extracted that this scene I mean this subculture is not interesting.

anymore and there is nothing left and again the subculture implodes so basically the cycle you know once again is the gigs create the cool thing this attracts the mops the mops start to override you know overflow the scene the subculture so the geeks retreat the sociopaths take control and they manag to lead the mops into being extracted and you know the value is extracted because the sociopath develop platforms and protocols uh with maximum capital efficiency in mind. So the value is extracted, the mops realize there is no value anymore and the community

implodes. Sorry about that if that rings a bell to anybody. Um so yeah the interesting thing when I read David Chapman's line of thought about you know subcultures was that it was immediately easy for me to relate this to the life cycle of the NPFP bubble. It was really clear. It was like almost like the playbook was absolutely there. You know, you had the cryptoanks and the first OG's collections like there was something real there. you know, people really believing in in these collections and they felt uh like they belong to these uh collectives and communities um until

you know it start to get bigger and bigger and bigger and the platforms start to get more ambitious and more ambitious and the and the value got extracted and it imploded. So actually what we should be careful in three and this is kind of my point also is that we are not we don't keep developing uh platforms that are designed for capital efficiency. You know, if uh if you develop the platforms in this way and you consider yourself that you are in the geek side of things uh

you will be extracted and I think like it it's of my opinion you know like this is happening still happening. We are still developing platforms and tools with extraction in mind and not so much uh with the survivability of the subcultures in mind. So what do we do with this? And David Chapman's solution is be slightly evil. What does this mean? This means I mean first of all this is a problem only for the geeks. This is not a problem for the mobs or the sociopaths. This is a problem from the point of view of the gigs the death of the subculture is a problem for them. So being slightly evil

what means is basically uh that geeks abandon some some ideas of idealism and eternalism. They are essentially eternalists geeks. They really believe in the thing and they have faith that the thing would succeed. Uh so what they actually what they had to do is take a little bit from the sociopaths learn a thing or two to be more realist because sociopaths are essentially nialistic. So they really understand the world and how everything operates and they know how to play with the rules of the world. So that's the David Chapman recommendation be a slightly evil.

So a little bit of what could this mean? Uh these are not final thoughts or anything like that. It's just some ideas uh to trigger conversations. Uh instead of again developing systems for maximum extraction we should be developing them for maximum cultural superbability. That's actually item number three you know resistance by design. uh create friction for the extraction of this subculture. You can you can also you know think about empowering the gigs. This means giving the gigs and the keepers of the lord of this subculture uh really big cultural vital power so they can keep away you

know when they identify purely financial interests uh that may override the project. So they can you know be that and another option could be you know integrate them up. I actually really like this this line of thought uh which is basically education. Why are we not educating more uh uh you know the mob crowd and not treat them like fungible liquidity? instead, you know, maybe you can create mini geeks, you know, hey, let's you know, I want to teach you and tell you about all this lore and the unchain art scene, and I hope you like it. So, basically the cultural game is one by building and building keeping in mind a cultural resistance

when designing our systems. So, that's basically it. Thank you very much. If you found this interesting, you can readman full article in meaningness.com. Thank you so much. Bueno team so eh en español, ¿no?

Sí. Vale.

Entonces hoy nuestra responsabilidad a futuro, ¿no?

[resoplido] The truth is that I suffer my expectations of I like it to mix art with blockchain. These spaces that create those links between opportunities and people coming to these meetings is great because you know a lot of people who are doing amazing things. Me this type of gathering holds significant importance ensuring the continued growth and flourishing of communities worldwide and also to generate community since it grows in this way. Not only I invite you to come to the credit or economic event.

Muchas gracias. Gracias chicos. Se dice que soy fea.
