From Self-Custody to Everyday Use: What Wallets Must Get Right
Pragma Tokyo 2026 · 26 Sept 2026 · 19:12
Seihaku Yoshida, founder of a large Japanese non-custodial wallet, makes the case that crypto wallets are becoming everyday payment apps, pointing to the fast growth of yen stablecoins in Japan. He describes a link with a telecom payment app whose users can swap their points into stablecoins, a Visa crypto card, and a convenience store trial in which staff simply scan a QR code in the wallet and the merchant receives yen. Because Japan treats payment-license stablecoins, trust-bank stablecoins and foreign stablecoins as different products, he explains that wallet operators must follow the legal framework for each one. He also introduces a wallet MCP (Model Context Protocol) service meant to let AI agents make payments.

Hello. Uh, thank you very much for uh, joining this session. I'm CEO and founder of the company called Hashbots. We are the biggest non-custodial wallet company in Japan and we have 1.1 million user is using our wallet. Uh I think wallet is no more uh tools or applications just hold the digital assets but uh wallet can be a next generation s up in digital assets. So yeah please let me introduce the overview uh of our wallet and what happen in the Japanese markets. So yeah this is the brief introduction about
myself. I we start the company uh from uh 2018 and uh we provided uh the world service to uh many telecom companies uh uh the financial institutions and uh we are also the uh non-conased wallet uh apps operator and uh we have the two very how do I say this significant uh application one called hashbot wallet and another one called a hashbot wallet for business. A hashport wallet is the biggest non-custodial wallet in Japan and over the 80% of the Japanese stable coin user is using our wart and the
hashport wallet for business is the biggest stable coin payment aggregator. Uh I think very similar to the laws uh uh like the uh breach in the state or the banks in the uh Europe and uh yeah so we the yeah number one world application uh in this country and we also the wallet service provider for Osaka Eiso 2025 last year. Uh I think the Osaka Expo is a very unique event uh for uh how to say whole Japanese financial industries. So because all of the payment uh uh is the digital no cash
in the venue, no cash in the ticketing and no cashing anywhere and uh the payment system is built uh was built by the uh startups hashbots. So I think this is a very unique uh event for the Japanese financial industry and uh yeah at the time we uh provided our payment service with uh uh more than 170 companies and uh it uh became the how this is the base the uh the current base of our service and uh uh the region why we can how do this acquired
uh uh uh more than 1 million user and uh has the region wide they are very active because we work very close with our shareholder KDDDI. KDDDI is the biggest uh uh one of the biggest telecom company in Japan uh and also the third biggest payment service uh apps provider in Japan. their application called AUP. Uh AUP has uh 35 million user and our WhatsApp is deeply connected with a pay.
Uh the AUP user can use their mileage point uh to swap to the stable coin and of course they can charge the stable coin to the QR code payment service. So we are deeply connected with the uh current onampramp channel and uh it is a very convenient user experience for the Japanese users. This is the reason why we can deeply how this uh uh connect with the users uh the uh lifestyle. Yeah. And we also one of the biggest crypto card service operator in Japan.
uh we collaborate with Visa from uh last November and we already provide it a card called the hashport card. Uh this card is deeply connected with the uh wallet application and the user can use the wallet applications uh deposit to uh daily payment. So, so this is a very how this is our uh unique service and uh we also try to uh connect our wallet ecosystem with the daily life. Uh of course in the match under payment is one of the uh how this is the most important uh area uh in hashbot. We already
integrate uh we already integrated our service with many restaurants, shops uh and it includes the uh the one of the biggest convenience store chain loone. Uh so we successfully integrated the stable coin payment ecosystem to lo's post system uh two months ago uh this July. So uh I this was um uh how do you say very big update uh in the Japanese stable coin ecosystem. So because we are not only just connected our QR code payment service uh in the store but we
deeply connected with the post system. So that means uh uh the staff in low zone can uh very easy to uh accept a stable coin payment in their uh post system. So uh yeah yeah yeah this is a payment for as loen uh we provided a QR codes uh for the uh user in our uh wallet application and they just show the QR code to the staff in the LO store and u uh and after the staff scan the QR codes uh they will provide a number uh and user just accept
One of the very unique point is in the leit uh how the payment methodology printed uh as a stable coin. So stable coin is not how this just a kind of the PC phase but it's already printed in the listed from the convenience store in Japan. So this is a very uh I think a big leap in the Japanese stable coin ecosystem and uh of course this is just a uh PC in one loon shop but we want to uh move the PC phase to commercialization phase uh in next year.
So uh I think next time you come to Japan you can use your MetaMask your hashport wallet or any other kind of the warts uh to make the payment in uh any loss on the store next year. Yeah. So this is uh how the basic methodology uh in uh the stable coin uh payment uh in uh the loon's case uh we provide the QR codes natively in our wallets application and uh the staff just scan it and uh we also connect it with their payment aggregation system uh so the users uh just show you a wallet
and the loon just gets the JPY in any time uh they want. So uh this I I think this is a very smooth uh uh flow for both of the M side and the user side and we want to make it more sophisticated and uh uh move it to the commercialization phase. Yeah. Oh, and the other point is uh about this kind of the QR codes uh C system for the loans and any other kind of stores. We not only limited the QR codes API opens uh the hashport wallet and the wallet we
developed but we open the API for uh any uh any kind of wallet count uh want to make the payment in Japan. So we open the API. So if some if you are developer and you're interesting in integrate your service to the Japanese real march system um uh real match and payment ecosystem or Japanese EC e-commerce ecosystem so we are very happy to uh work with you and uh uh yeah and we also uh provided uh uh the service for uh the SM MB uh small med medium cross uh business
owners uh they can just start uh accept the stable coin payment for free and uh yeah uh yeah of course after how this is a town own function how this we charge the uh fee in on site but in the daily payments we we don't charge anything so Uh so uh almost more than 400 shops is already how they integrated uh this uh QR code payment uh service.
Yeah, this is just uh how this is the flow of uh of the service and uh the point is our the payment gateway service is multi-chain, multi-war and multi-token. So uh we already uh integrated of course the Ereum, Polygon, Arbitum, BMBB chain uh base and uh so more than 10 chains and uh so and we just prime to uh integrate uh more uh chain uh in next year. So uh yeah the additional point is we uh already integrate the Kaya chain the has the
most famous chain in Korea uh two weeks ago and uh we just plan to announce the integration other EBM chain uh uh next Monday. So yeah the chain acquisition speed is very high. So we're very happy to how they work with the more projects to uh how to integrate their ecosystem to the Japanese uh merchant or e-commerce network. Yeah. And uh the other how do you say this uh very important momentum uh in Japan is the stable coin ecosystem. So uh in Japan uh just so for example in global the stable
USD stable coins already has a history has uh uh uh more than 10 years history but in Japan we only has a 10 months uh history. So the fastest stable coin in Japan was issued in last November and uh uh but the market is growing in a very high speed. How uh this is uh the overview of the type of the stable coin. So uh in Japan the tokenized deposit and uh stable coin is to uh totally different two kind of the regulation and uh uh uh tokenized deposits. I think as
a a couple of company is planning to issue the tokenized deposit but nobody uh already issued it. And about the stable coin, uh JPYC is already uh issues the stable coin called uh payment uh the stable coin based based on uh based on the payment license and uh the JPYG issued by SBI and start group uh issues the stable coin based on the trust bank license. So uh the the uh each how I think this is how to say this to two busy church uh that's how to say this uh the each different type of the
license has each different type of the limitation in Japan. So that's means how to say uh we call it's the stable coin but how do you say it's totally different type of the financial product in Japan. So uh for example the GPYC is based on the payment license they have the 1 million GPY limitation uh but uh the GPIC from SBI they are uh they based on the trust bank license. So uh so basically they are not a payment product but a trust product. So they don't have any kind of the limitation. Yeah. And of course USDC the foreign issued stable
coin has a totally different kind of the regulation in Japan. So I think in Japan uh in the wallet business we we need to not only uh only understand uh how the stable coin works but uh we also need to care uh how uh what kind of the legal framework uh adapted to the uh wallet. So that means that uh world side need to care so the stable coins legal framework and provided uh the distribution service based on the stable coins legal
framework. So I think this is a very unique point in Japan. Yeah. Yeah. Of course. Uh so in Japan the stable coin I think is one of the most important and popular topic in the digital assets industry. So JPIC so very famous and of course JPIC uh from SBI is already issued and the three top mega banks in Japan uh just a prime to issue the stable coin I think next March. So uh I think this is a how do I say this is just a big bump of the JPY stable coin.
Yeah. And uh uh the growth of the stable coin market is also uh how this is a uh uh it is a very good momentum for us. So this is a number of the hashport wir monthly transaction uh is growing in 30 average 33% per month. So this is very high speed and uh uh I think uh so we are uh very focusing on the Japanese market and I think in in Japan the stable coin related market has a big potential not
only for the Japanese players but for the international developers. So uh I think the issa global organized the conference in Tokyo this year is a perfect timing and uh I just want to more uh developers can find the opportunity in the Japanese market and uh uh so the last update yeah from me is about our new service called the hashport wallet MCP. So, so as you know uh in the global the metam mask the coinbased wallet and any any kind of wars they open the MCP but uh in Japanese market there are no any prayer
can provide u uh MCP for the Japanese uh payment uh sol uh payment ecosystems uh that means not only is the onchain transaction that's the uh so I think the MCP must uh need need to be control not only the onchain transaction but the uh offchain uh onamp off transaction and uh yeah we uh plan to start the service uh from uh 13th September so uh next Wednesday. So you can how this is just uh uh uh join our MCP and uh how this is understand how the Japanese payment
ecosystem works and how can they connected to uh uh the uh AI agents. Yep. And uh we also finish the test uh about the MCP. So we just uh yeah control our MCP to make the payment for restaurants and uh uh the hotel reservation. Uh so yeah I think there more uh opportunity will happen in AI agent related space and uh we want to our hashport wallet be house is the uh biggest uh wallet service uh provider uh uh not only for the uh humanity in Japan
but for the uh AI agent used by the Japanese people. So yeah. So uh my last message is so we are very open and I think the how do you say the big opportunity is happened in Japan and uh we really want to collaborate with the developers from global and connect your service to the Japanese uh uh uh uh Japanese digital asset ecosystem. Yeah.
Uh thank you very much for your time and uh please feel free to uh contact me uh after the session. I just working there. Uh so very nice to meet you everybody. Thank you.
