Everybody has been very quietly building | Chia Jeng Yang
European Blockchain Convention (Mar 2023) · 2 May 2023 · 4:49
Chia Jeng Yang, an investor, argues that mainstream enterprise adoption of blockchain has kept growing quietly through the downturn, contrasting the corporate blockchain teams cut in 2018 and 2019 with teams that are now expanding and attending the conference. He cites rising smart contract usage at one portfolio company as his own data point, without figures, and reads the period as one of maturity with bad actors called out. He says he moved from traditional fintech investing to crypto because it is global and permissionless, expects enterprises to use it widely, and holds that it is up to the industry to shape responsible use.

[Music] yeah I think the settlement has really hit an inflection point in terms of adoption of crypto blockchain Technologies we see that Enterprise adoption mainstream Enterprise adoption of blockchain technology has really continued to grow you know over the the past few months past few years we see these teams really continue to expand you see me where the is you know from Starlights from Disney's from all these large Enterprises really continue to to exist and for me that Maps a very fundamental shift from the last bit of academic experience in you know 2018 um 2019 where you know I like the job
that a lot of these blockchain Innovation corporate teams got fired back in the day but here they're growing they're there at this conference they are still here trying to talk to people try to build things try to go about shows just very quietly building um and and really because of all all the things we've done over the past few years and so you know that gestation period has really come to fruition I think coincidentally uh with all the the change and disruption and all the bad actors really being called out um protruding periods from crisis so I think that's a good thing I think that means a real adoption quiet adoption of blockchain technology and crypto uh
continues to go and that's a good thing for the industry um it's that's a side of maturity that we're seeing um you know and we have a portfolio company Alchemy of us whoever is that the series a where we've been able to track the adoption and use of the smart contracts which is continue to grow you know really throughout the time Denmark and so we're fundamentally really excited about the fundaments in business which in all my has really come stronger um and and while when experiences watching The Bad actors I used to be a fintech investor invest in very traditional Financial technology
instead of a large financial institutions smaller fintechs and everything in between and the one thing that got me super interested in in crypto blockchain is the fact that we're really breaking down some of these barriers that exist it's Global it's permissionless it's almost by definition an industry which demands that you know you go back you go home you try to really affect and benefit millions of people you know hundreds of thousands of organizations globally and that's what interests with a lot about the potential scale and I think that as we started to see it's really inevitable that we'll see you know blockchain crypto really be
utilized by Enterprises all acrossful and it is up to us really to shape response for use of this technology and use that fundamentally benefits consumers fundamentally benefits Enterprises and unlocks that Global the private PA and that's some limitations we have tonight someone will be excited about the potential thank you foreign what's great about being you know in Terra as a fun being so early in the sea of being here for multiple bear markets is that we're always going to see new
generations of super interesting entrepreneurs super interesting Founders innovate come off New Deals benefit more people and that's something we're super excited to see and so I think to newer generation of folks I mean from traffic coming with crypto uh we are long-term Pockets I think a lot of people can say that but not many people have actually survived multiple bear markets and been there been supporting you know key infrastructure players the entire way of the um the the journey despite multiple Market Cycles we're not where we're we're working here for a very long time we're not doing away anytime soon we get to support companies we want to be very Hands-On we want to be able to really think through some of the new problem
sets that are emerging and unique difficulties that crypto faces uniquely as an industry and we have been there from the beginning we'll continue to be here to support um all these major progress thank you
