Envisioning Eco-Futures: Empowering Nature through Sovereignty and Innovation

EthPrague 2024 · 1 Jun 2024 · 20:40

Treating nature as a sovereign entity with human stewards, rather than as an asset, is the premise of this talk by Rica Amaral. She describes a protocol that links ecological data collected by local stewards to digital assets so funding flows back to field projects, and a portal where holders can see the animal or land behind their asset. Proof-of-concept campaigns with companies produced artwork badges and collectibles, and she says the projects keep about 70 to 80 percent of the money raised, with a typical campaign minimum around 10,000.

hello everyone nice to to be here nice to see some familiar faces here as well so um I'll be speaking about uh how can we Empower thank you um can I ask can I see my direct okay and can I see my notes uh that's okay it's okay um so for style yeah yeah for style that's fine so yeah

so uh we're going to talk about how can we Empower U Nature by make like uh acknowledging its sovereignty through Technology Innovation and human human uh stewardship and how this is um important for us or as a partnership for us for um changing the relationship that we have the relation that we have with natural resources in in nature itself so um first I want to talk about um what sovereignty means right so sovereignty means self-governance and I I think everyone

here knows a little bit about governance and it's really understanding their complexity because nowadays in our society we really um we see the natural resources as just assets right and if it's not something that you can feed the the economical system there's no value and because of that we have all these problems we have there we have now so Mass uh Extinction we have you know degradation of of nature Etc and in contrast with that we do have like traditional communities or indigenous communities that saw nature as sovereignty as own entity and because

of that they see others as stewards and they saw nature as you know a vital part of um of our um uh um Society or their societies and yeah so one thing that is very important to to realize is that uh I really like technology and I think technology is something that can really help us and um and it's not the end goal because some people say oh technology is something you know that's the problems that we created that you use technology to to fix the problems you created but I see that more as a tool as a very

powerful tool when we have very Advan tools nowadays for that um to actually get the goal of biodiversity restoration and imagine like you know a local community or a that they have like smartphones or even paper and pencil to um you know check or uh uh GA data from the fors that they do and with this you know they can really push forward a new way of um funding their their efforts or um being supported with the things that they need with education and everything else um because

um in this way it kind of like you start flipping the economics of uh of you know like funding like like bi biodiversity um I want to talk a little bit about like Sovereign nature initiative that's where I work in right now and we created like two ways of dealing with this data or this Echo data that stewards um produce uh one is the Deep protocol so deep protocol is a protocol that links the echo data to digital Assets in a way that um creates a circle of funding forwards and efforts around the world and uh and besides that we also have the

real port portal that's where actually story happens or is the stories history and engagement happens so everyone has an asset with the with the with like with the E EchoLink asset they can see which animal is directly connected to that asset or the land and the stewards the people that working with it so it's really like a a way of creating this relatability that so important when you're dealing with uh um biod diversity or restoration um this is probably everybody knows and I think it's very important to say also about the work that we do so rwa means you know real word assets but for us that's a

different meaning uh for us it's really about reward animals and it's really you know it's about life and it's about um acknowledging this life uh their entities like their self entities because for us and that's really our belief and that underpins everything that we do it's that life is not an asset um and that's why we tried everything that we do uh uh to to other beinging and to understand that when you give agency to to to Nature that you see them as something else than just an asset but besides technology um there is something very important for us that is community and without the community it's really hard for us to um push forward

the Environmental efforts that we want to do that's why that uh we say that human stewardship is so important so these are all projects that we work with our partners so we have like Kenya Costa Rica Romania and Portugal um and through the things that we do you know it's that's how we do change because it's about education it's about engagement it's about really giving them the tools and the knowledge or exchanging knowledge for them be able to you know provide or do the afford or the the actions they are doing on uh on land and just to give an examples because I've been talking about like a very conceptual things so this I'm going to just examples how can you use this

Echo data and connect to assets and how they can translate in Impact for them so this is a project that we did with NG the Energy company and the idea here was like their CSR program or the CSR Department wanted to promote their uh environmental efforts in Daka Bay in Morocco to internally to all their employees so what they created was we created this um Echo badges through the data that we collect so that's why also art is so important for us that's why we try to create like artistic um pieces so an artist is also a datet science collected data from the stewards that from the D protocol as well and

from that she create all this this badges we create like 12 badges there was distributed for for the for the employees and create an engagement and for the local community working there these translating in them reorganize themselves to push some policies to you know uh preserve the dolphin the bottom of dolphin in the dban Morocco another example that we have that uh oh you cannot it's supposed to be a video but it's like those like uh we did with wallet connect so those called sound waves so for their launch of the web three inbox they wanted to present ENT or celebratory nfts for all the alphas we started using their their their new um feature of messaging for wallets and

this is um so the artist also create a whole video from the conversation of Wales in the Caribbean and with that so the the H1 got like a frame of this video as a celebratory nft as well and the impact that it had that they were able to hire new people to work like local people to work in this restoration and preservation um efforts as well the third uh like little uh uh example that we're going to do is about like the pups that we did for Poka doer last year because they wanted to engage their um their their the people their public into environmental uh uh efforts and make

something different from just the PO so they can see what what's like you know like they do things also for for sustainability so we created these whales and dolphins uh pups that could go from rare to Legendary and was like basic nfts uh or poops and they also like the people who got the legendary they also got a trip to see with the researchers from Portugal like the Wales and and and the Dolphins uh research and with that as well so the people who work on on the field with this the aim the they steward they were able to expand their education program about the preservation of whales and dolphins in in Portugal so this was

just a little little examples on what we could do with this Echo data those are all small PCS like proof of Concepts that we did because we still like expanding and experimenting and seeing what what is possible with this technology right and so here it's my you know nowadays everyone has their AI generated pictures in the presentation so I also don't have mine here but it's just to say that um it's been said that you know data is a the oil of the 21st century so the idea is really to use this data for a good use and I think that even though they can sound like zootopian I think that it's you know the technolog is there it's it's able to do

it for we can really fund biodiversity restoration and and trying to you know create new ways of integrating Financial system with economic with ecological systems as well and it's really about not seeing nature as just a a backdrop of a society but it's really an active participant of it you know then and and creating a way for us all to you know restore biodiversity mainly um so this is was really short talk because probably you know I My AG my notes with me but anyway I can talk to you more and explain the

technology here in my QR code you can check our website there's the white paper there there's all my context there and it's really idea of like creating like AEP e Echo crypto techno artist Topia of you know from from from what we have from helping biodiversity restoration thank you thank you and uh we have a lot of time to ask questions if there are any please yep yeah so now would you say that nature is data as well what do I mean by Nature so the data that we get is from the stewards and they could be from

track patterns could be threats could be behaviors could be number of of of uh um individuals in a species could be sounds also that's very important for preservation restoration so it could be any kind of data that it's important for the the work they are doing on field okay yeah main thank you anymore okay thank you thanks for the amazing uh presentation I hope to understand more like uh the fund raised uh to help the nature like how would it um do we need

to go back to Fiats and then like to uh go into the projects because like the normal World Is Still web to right and how does it go like so um so the projects that we work with so is a very small scale so of course the the Deep protocol they directly uh uh send the money for the stewards but they had to of course offramp it uh uh that's that's the way it is right now uh and we help them of course doing that so that's we work directly connect with them so all these projects that we see we work with we know them personally we go there when we do research with them we have a head of of field research in our team as well

who does that so we have like a personal connection with them to also help them because they are not web free at all uh uh some are like more you know uh tech savy let's put this way or more integrated most of them are not so that's how we do it right now and they said this was very like small scale so far uh because we're still like expanding like we have new projects coming in they are going to be bigger but it's that's how we do right now if I may ask what are the main challenges this community are facing uh what are the feedback what what is the feedback that provide you I me the main the main challenges is really about funding that's why we uh that's why we are uh uh doing what we do so how can we

create new funding streams for them they so they don't depend so much in donations and it's this really the idea behind it how can we flip the economics of donations of funding biodiversity restoration and conservation and because that's the main because they know what the work they do they have all the tools and they just need the funding to be able to expand to buy new tools there are people there are projects that we work with that they work that they bought a Jeep to to be able to see more uh land they they they hire new people they that's different things that they can use the money for that help them expand and deepen their their their their work any more questions

yep thank you so much for the presentation I think it's such an interesting way to connect like web 2 and web 3 together and how you are supporting you know the whole environment with it my question would be like if somebody is in someone is interested in like you know getting more involved in your project and like supporting this km movement like what's the best way to get started with you yeah so in this care code you can find our website and a direct connection to me as well so we can talk to me but it's because we're mainly work B2B right now so we work with companies they are willing to um support or fund biodiversity restoration project and so we work with NG with wallet connect M

polka dot uh so that's how we are working right now and then we create a project that is that makes sense for the for the for the company as well maybe a company already has some projects going on as as Ang headed and we just plugged in our technology and what we do with them so mainly is this and then we can start talking it's kind of we the website right now we do have a echo badges uh uh landing page set up with six projects already set up that is very easy to to in like okay I want to you know support this project and you're going to go directly to a messaging that we're going to get it and we can start like building up this and then you have this Echo badges like not like NG of course but it's kind of like you know

this this artworks made by a data scientist that is directly related to to the data that is collected by the by the stewards and the people who call their badges they can go to the real portal and see the exactly animal that is connected to to this to this nft uh to this token and yeah and learn a little bit more about it and check it sweet thank you so much no problem thank you speaking about like web uh sorry B2B like do you have any plans to just expand to the b2c side whether it's connecting interested Minds with you know projects how they can get more involved uh Beyond like just meing the nfts sorry can you repeat again um the the the whole thing or yeah yeah so I'm

just interested like speaking about like B2B do you have any plans to expand to b2c whether you are you know connecting like interested folks interested mind with projects sure I mean for us we can we are really open to to work with BC as well because I think that you know anything that we can do to help fund biodiverse restoration conservation is great we we made this decision of working with B to be in more disclosed projects to not get into the speculation part of nfts and you know the whole thing so that's why we decided this way but yeah I mean yes we we're definitely open for that as well yeah thank you so much thanks thank you more

questions yep oh thank you for the talk U I really like the T-shirt can I buy it somewhere actually no not yet but but I'll make sure to make this this this available cuz I got like a couple of people stopping me to talk about the T-shirt thank you another question from me uh what brought you personally to this space to everything you are talking about and what's what's your story tell us you have still we have time you cut your presentation go for so um actually I I always work in the space since 2017

anything but always in the impact side so that's how I came up to it doing like the studies my master and got into blockchain and went directly to blockchain for impact and so that's what drives me is that how can we use new technologies to really um make a change for the better in the world you know support biodiversity support is not only about environmental it's also social for me it's directly connected as well so that's how I I got it here cool thank you and one more practical uh we are talking about communities that are supporting different initiatives and you are supporting them what are the sums that we're talking like is it like 1,000 10,000 100,000 like what what what are

the budget that you're looking for um so it depends of the project right so um what what sum of money will make you happy that I mean the most the most amount of money it's the best I think the minimum that we can you know give to to make a difference for a project is giving them each time time we we run a campaign is like 10,000 like for them you know uh normally the work that we do they they keep 70 to 80% of the money and we keep the rest for like of course organizational costs so but they different different projects are different different uh uh amount of money so Mona got like 80,000 from this projects while another project that we did actually with that web 2 game me

like uh uh they got just 2,000 because you know the deal was how was was made uh um so it depends of course as I said there's a minimum there that I think for them to be able to really do something 10,000 more or less but um depends of the the scope of the project we have more money and more people than than than others yeah thank you thank you looks like we are good thank you very much for the presentation thank you for the questions uh we still have uh some time until the next speaker so if you want to have a drink or walk around we give some fresh air into this room uh see you in
