#DappCon22: Day 3 - Proof Of Humanity, How to Prove a Unique Identity on the Internet, Andrei Radu

DappCon 2022 · September 2022 · 22:23

Andrei Radu examines Proof of Humanity and the broader problem of proving a unique identity on the internet in this DappCon 2022 talk. Radu walks through how a Sybil-resistant registry can verify that each account belongs to one real person, without relying on a central authority to vouch for anyone. The talk sets that identity problem against the needs of decentralized applications that depend on one-person-one-claim guarantees, tying it to DappCon 2022's focus on decentralized identity and digital public goods.

hello everyone can you hear me okay so I'm Andre I'm from cleros I helped build the next version of proof of humanity and today I'm gonna present it to you there's this okay so the name proof of humanity seems a bit explicit like hey you you should prove your Humanity but I guess you need to talk more about that like in crypto and on the internet in general we have this problem uh how do you prove a unique identity

because we want we don't want uh like civil attacks like uh hey if if someone gets some some benefit from being on a list then we want to give that benefit to a person only once we don't want to give it multiple times so how how should we solve this civil resistance problem online well in web 2 uh people solve it by uh I don't know asking for government ideas or for passports or things like this but in crypto we we don't we are a decentralization fans so we don't really

want that we don't want uh to give any uh ideas we don't want some Central authority to check the ideas so we we don't want that uh there could be other Solutions like uh I don't know uh checking the biometric data like the iris or the fingerprints but that's still uh requires a lot of assumptions about Hardware but uh trusting like the hardware the company is producing it and like the individuals so that's also a difficult thing to solve so proof of humanity is a way to prove

uh that you are not a civil uh it is an existing protocol when you go to the website you see a presentation hey proof of you might is a system combining webs of trust reverse Turing tests dispute resolution to create a civil proof list of humans so what are these terms what do they mean uh firstly proof of humanity exists is launched in March 2021 on ethereum it has almost 17 000 humans and uh yeah it's it's a Dao it it's one of it's like the 10th biggest Dao on a snapshot

uh how do you register for it so in order to register for proof of humanity you you need to make a picture of yourself and a video of yourself saying hey I certify I'm a real human and I do not belong in this registry uh that is one thing this is like the reverse during test that you need to provide as evidence that you are a unique human you also need to have someone watch for you for example here you can see uh someone watch for uh this guy his vitalik if you don't know him he's the founder of ethereum

and another thing you also need some deposit to basically have some game theory around it so uh you have some deposits you can pay it yourself or you can have others paid and uh once you put all this stuff like you put the deposit you put the evidence then you are going through a challenging period where you can be challenged that hey if if you don't follow the rules then uh then you are not going to be added to the list and someone is gonna steal your deposit so how does this challenging Works who decides whether the

profile the summation is valid or not well that is uh secured by clarus so clarus is a subjective Oracle on online dispute resolution mechanism we basically have like jurors are staked in the cleros court and when there is a dispute uh Futures are picked and they they decide they each vote uh who is right in this case it could be the submitter or the Challenger and the like the majority vote wins and jurors

are incentivized to to vote with the majority basically creating a shelling Point mechanism if if they vote with the majority after the majority is picked they get rewarded of it otherwise they get penalized a bit so in the proof of humanity case we have the submitter which uh like puts the deposit uh if the challenging period passes without someone challenging them then the submitter is added to the list otherwise someone says that the profile is not does not follow some rules and the Challenger can get into a dispute with the submitter so the juror

then is picked they say who is right it could be the submitter it could be the Challenger and that person gets all the money in the game like the deposit of the submitter so the juror the jurors decide based on a policy like the process is very is formalized basically uh the policy is like a PDF document specifying hey when you do the picture you should be facing the camera when you do the video your address should be written to prevent let's say uh like uh

like deep fake attacks or things like this uh you should be like your whole face should be visible these are just some of the rules involved in the policy and this like the Challenger challenge is based on those roles and the jurors also decide who who is the winner based on those roles and thing is that we uh like these parties can be very strict sometimes because they are motivated by capital so for example uh we had a case this is Kevin Aoki the founder of git coin he said hey I want to be registered on

proof of humanity he made a profile and he put us as his picture he put this uh nice photo of himself but he wasn't quite facing the camera as the policy said so like there were uh there was a big dispute around it or like many appears and uh there was even some guy that uh like to prove that he is not facing the camera like he went around the streets of Chicago and he was asking people like hey do like he he had a list of 10 profiles of 10 pictures uh like seven of them facing the camera and three of them one of them Kevin uh being not really

facing the camera and he was asking them hey which of these pictures is not facing the camera and like he did uh basically a live scientific study which is like better than most scientific studies nowadays so yeah the jurors The Challengers are very strict they could be very artistic in the good way yeah so I started working on proof of humanity this year proof of humanity as I said has been out for like one and a half years and in V2 we are

we are in Germany German people like to put version numbers to things foreign yes yes so proof of your activity what does it in there basically in proof of humanity you ready in V1 you register with your address and your address belongs to your Humanity but if you lost your address then you will have to re-register with another address but you might uh like on your old address you might have heard some stuff some soul bone stuff that you have lost with that address so in proof of

humanity V2 there is this concept of of a soul bound ID basically when you register you you have to always belong as a real human to the same unique ID so basically once I register I have assigned to myself uh on unique ID if I lost my address I can I can just so I lost my address I know my my dog ate my Hardware wallet and I can just request removal from that address and I will uh add myself

pointing to the to the Same Soul Bond ID thus I I basically belong to the same uh identifier every time as a human otherwise if I if I try to claim another person's ID or some ID that is not mine that has not been assigned to me before then I can be challenged so there are some new rules in the policy new new opportunities for Challengers to act autistic we also expand on multiple chains we are

we are going to expand first on gnosis chain SO gas fees minus minus deposit required gonna be much lower and probably more projects integrating will be many new possibilities especially with the gases which are like zero so being registered on proof of humanity technically speaking is just is human of address equals equals true yeah that's like the technical stuff so what why should you be registered on proof of

humanity like what's this useful for one of them is Ubi hey if you know if we know you are a unique human on the internet then people can just give you like one Ubi token because you cannot really see Bill attack it so there could be Ubi experiments around it right now proof of humanity being on mainnet there is one Ubi project around it it has a it has had quite it was quite popular especially in Argentina like it has like 17K profiles

and it's distributed tokens to this all these profiles we can offer air drops let's say you want to to give one token to one human in his lifetime so if that human uh if that human changed his address anyhow then he wouldn't be able to get the airdrop again you can have solvent tokens and since you're in V2 your Humanity always belongs to one ID this is like as solvent As It Gets so and that's uh that would be

that would be that could be enhanced by a Sol bound wallet which would be built soon like let's say your funds will belong to a wallet which is connected to your unique Humanity identifier you could also have governance experiments like one person one vote proof of humanity being a Dao is currently governed by one person one vote voting with delegations uh yeah and it could be like a lot of governance experience experiments with one person one vote with soul bound tokens combined together it's uh It just fits

into this new trend of saltbond of decentralized society Waters you could have like gated communities like let's say a Twitter which only allows humans to register on proof of humanity or any any kind of forum and also social recovery you have something connected to your soul-bound wallet you just need to point uh to just remove your old address and point to another one and just you still have access to your funds basically what what's good about it is that hey if I want to sell my funds on My Soul Bond

wallet to someone I want to sell my soul Bond wallet to someone like that transaction doesn't really have value since uh as the human belonging to that Humanity ID I can always just simply recover it yeah so that was my uh talk Charlie prepared sir [Applause] that was really helpful does anybody have any questions proof of humanity cleros Arbitrage identity oh sure so uh thanks thanks for your talk you mentioned some applications of proof of humanity with V2 being soul-bound tokens uh and you mentioned this is pretty much

as soul-bound as it gets can you can you talk can you expand on that and uh like what what are the challenges with soul bound tokens and how is proof of humanity V2 maybe unique Okay so like people currently refer to Soul Bond as uh like some non-transferable asset let's say with pop-ups you just have the like the Pull-Ups connected to your like puts to your address and uh you cannot transfer them but you could in practice just sell the address to someone and hey they have all the all

the those pop-ups or those non-transferable tokens just they just had them by getting access to that address but in proof of humanity if all those uh non-transferable assets are connected let's say to a Sol bound wallet which Belongs To Your Soul Bond ID if if I sell if you sell to someone uh let's say the account with the with those assets with those uh solvent uh nfts then like the seller could already could always just uh recover the the access to those assets very easily thank you fascinating

um could you cope could the system cope with the population of the entire country like the UK that 60 million people hmm interesting question so so that depends entirely on the Challenger ecosystem because we can think of proof of humanity as a game between submitters those who want to get on the list to benefit from whatever proof of humanity ecosystem has to offer and there are the challengers who are incentivized by hey if I challenge this profile justly and I can get their deposits so they are motivated by

capital so if if the if the challengers are incentivized enough to make uh like a sustainable system which can support Millions tens of millions of uh of submitters then it's entirely scalable well I mean like jurors anyone can be a juror so like if jurors uh like if jurors say hey there are there is lots of uh Capital given by being a juror here then like many people would come or they

would just be happy to have many cases and still like the it depends on the policy and on the user experience but uh like the challenging rate is like I don't know four percent or something like that like four percent of the profiles of the submissions get challenged I think that question faucet itself because the basic income is produced from a large Corpus of funds and can that then survive a nation-state like the UK or something even more populated that might be a developing country or poor country in nature and does that then depend on the gross

Corpus like if it's only a million dollars and it's a 120 million million people you know that's like they get a few cents so how does the faucet work does it just produce um because the understanding of universal basic income is that it produces lifetime money it has like this long tail expectation which I think is a little unrealistic with blockchain because you it would depend entirely on tokenomics right you would have to have never-ending economics yeah so like the supply of the token like it depends on the mechanism like one example is giving uh each person register from now on I give everyone one token per hour but so I click I create this Supply but in order to increase the price of the

token I need to I need to get some demand for it which could be like getting some utility for the token like uh I don't know there is maybe there could be some Market which it could also be like just uh charity like some markets which on every transaction they burn a percentage of the Ubi or just some guy like vitalik buying uh uh 10 million dollars of uba and just just uh burning them yeah does anybody have any more questions if not I have one what how do you deal

with junk data how do you deal with um obsolete data because I lose my wallet I have another wallet if I lose that wallet I have another wall and then I try to replace it on the proof of humanity like I can only have one fingerprint in like biologically but from an ID standpoint how do you deal with like dirty data like junk data or obsolete data like do you purge the system do you purge the protocol of that data or or how does it well like what what uh what could be junk data okay so um I am opting in I'm logging in and I'm saying this is not my ID anymore this is my ID okay but this previous

wallet has got soul bound tokens it probably has a fair drop it has like a few other things that it has collected but now you have to migrate this to my new ID okay yeah so like it would be up to the Challengers and jurors to like they could check uh it could be a simple check like they could just see who was the last last submission uh corresponding to this Humanity ID and uh based on that they could decide hey is the same person so it's it's okay more questions no more questions and thank you so much

for your time Andre um thank you [Applause]
