Carly Reilly, host of the Overpriced JPEGs and Between Two Layers podcasts, joins Web3 Academy hosts Jay Hamilton and Kyle Reidhead. She traces her path from a hedge fund and Andrew Yang's presidential campaign into NFTs and explains why she has not launched a token for her show. The conversation covers creator monetization, lifetime-membership NFTs that leave holders without real ownership, creator royalties, and a Puerto Rico documentary she releases alongside a new project.

GM GM welcome back to web3 Academy a place for entrepreneurs businesses and creators to explore and learn how to use web3 to transform business models and build thriving communities this is Jaybird and I'm here with my co-host Kyle reedhead what's up Kai what is up my friends today we had a special guest on the podcast Carly Riley the podcast host of overpriced jpegs and between two layers is the other one she's got uh really really excited to to bring her on you know we talked about a lot so we talked about Carly's journey in building the top nft podcast in the space which is really really cool we talked about why she hasn't launched a token yet and
that brought I think a really good conversation between all three of us just on around like Creator monetization and web3 and yeah it was really really nice I really enjoyed that conversation we talked about how she's celebrating her one year anniversary and ever podcast and how she's going to do that in sort of a physical and web three-way with their with their listeners which is pretty cool uh and then finally she drops for the first time a big big big time announcement and something that is live on the day that you are actually listening this assuming you listen this in the day it comes uh comes out the podcast but it's a big deal the crypto space and it was done in partnership with metamask so stick around to the end because you want to hear what's going on there it is pretty pretty awesome and
pretty cool on what she's doing yeah I think this is one of my favorite shows that we've done just because it comes from somebody who is so deep in the space and has such an ability to zoom in but also zoom out and so we got great conversations and great perspectives on the macro of why web3 matters and why how businesses are thinking about this but then we're also able to zoom in on some great stories and some specific examples of creators tokenizing their time tokenizing their work really cool stories that you guys are going to get out of this and the exciting announcement at the end which is also something that gives you an opportunity
to not only support Carly and support web3 but also support charity and uh just by you don't have to make a donation just by showing up in this way you guys are going to find out you can support a great cause so really cool stuff what a show today it was awesome it was awesome I love it all right well before we jump in if you enjoy web3 Academy and you want to support us in a zero cost way you can do this so easily just by subscribing to our podcast or subscribing to our YouTube channel if you're on YouTube hit the like button if you have any questions or thoughts for us please leave a comment we read those comments it's super helpful for us to learn how to grow and to make better
content for you and to onboard Millions into web3 so grateful for all of our listeners we couldn't do this without you thanks for showing up as always before we jump into Today's Show let's take a minute to hear from our sponsors the future of social media is here and that future lives in web 3 on top of lens protocol web 2 social platforms are broken and right for disruption you see the epicenter of social media is the creators and yet they are the most neglected web 2 platforms like Facebook Tick Tock and Instagram are all essentially robbing creators of their worth creators are a new type of entrepreneur forming new types of businesses yet with web 2 platforms creators don't own their content to their profiles and that's their product in business instead they are tied to the
platforms they choose to create on well just like how crypto is freeing us from Banks web 3 is freeing us from these centralized platforms on lens protocol creators own their content own their profile and even their social graphing followers in the form of nfts this allows you to move freely from one social application to another with your content profile and followers moving along with you lens protocol enables self-sovereignty for your social graph and interoperability across the internet at web3 Academy we believe this is the future of Social and that's is why we've partnered with lens to ensure that the path of social media is heading in the right direction visit lens.xyz to learn more today everyone welcome to another episode of
web3 Academy it's my episode now well you know what gmgm did come from Carly I I fully picassoed that one so wow the truth comes out that is where that is where and and what happened was uh I feel like we're just recording now but what happened we dived in um I was listening when we first started the show I was listening to overpriced jpegs shout out one of my absolute favorite products probably my favorite podcast Carly probably like probably the only podcast that I listen to like I listen to every episode
and um and and and I was trying to figure out how to bring web3 culture into the show more and you always start with gmgm and so I tried it once on our show and immediately afterwards it just hit so many people started messaging and calling us and saying GM GM and it's it happens it's a funny thing how it like bonds Bill you're like the best most engagement you'll ever get on a tweet it's just like tweeting GM I'm like spending all this time thinking of like the perfect web3 thesis to tweet out it gets like two likes and I'm like hit me with a GM and it's like 100 likes and you know without a comments I'm like well screw it you know you can't overthink yeah you can't overthink it
you just gotta go you just go I mean if you can't if you can't beat them join them right what's the what's the saying you know jump in GM yeah all right well welcome to another show of web3 Academy it is the doer Spotlight and today with us we have the one and only the legend Carly Riley host of overpriced jpegs and between two layers and we couldn't be more stoked to dive in to everything on Carly's end so let's start Carly with uh with your rabbit hole Story how did you yeah how did you first how did you first fall down the rabbit hole well thanks for having me guys this is so fun um my rabbit hole story I'll try and give the the quick version of this um I worked at a hedge fund out of
college and there was like the one D gen in the office this is back like 2016 2017 who you know was like deep into crypto funny funny story this was you know coinbase days but coinbase was super early he was really into like trading Monero which everybody knows what Monero is maybe that gives you a sense like you know you're like the super privacy coin I didn't really you know know too much at the time but um you know he once was late for work he's getting gold bars delivered to his house because he couldn't Cash Out direct to Fiat with Monero like if you wanted to sell Monero you you had like go to bitcoin and then cash out to Fiat it was like many more steps but there were sites where you could literally just buy gold with your Monero so it was
like so you know it was like that era of crypto and um you know he definitely wet my appetite like I was like the one loser in the office who was like willing to like listen to him endlessly drone on about this stuff because I did think it was it was interesting and we talked about ethereum I I bought a book about ethereum actually that I think I never read but um and was like oh like the concept of smart contracts like it was it was interesting um and then I kind of put it aside I went and worked for Andrew Yang's presidential campaign so I joined I joined that campaign really early after hearing Andrew on a podcast funny enough podcast very influential pieces of my life and uh ended up working as a finance director for the last year or so of the campaign so I was really just
focused on fundraising working with a lot of our big donors and we had a number of donors who were in crypto so it sort of stayed on my radar there not any of the ins and outs but I was like all right this is still like a thing and um and then after like left politics was like that is a toxic Beast love Andrew but you know politics is kind of tough on the mental health and I went to a venture studio and that's where I was at the beginning of last year when I started I don't even know exactly what triggered it but like started to see what was happening in defy and I was like oh like they're doing it like all these things that were sort of conceptual in 2016.
you know theoretical about ethereum is actually now being developed and isn't this sick and so that's when I started to fall down the rabbit hole and discovered nfts you know probably a couple months into into 2021 did you reach back to your ex to your employ like deploy that you scored no uh actually I did at that point we've talked right right um since so I I may have yeah maybe I did and texted him at some point I don't remember we've talked a couple times since I've sort of refound my my love of crypto and um and then yeah and then was like totally down the rabbit hole and quit my adventure Studio job being like I want to do something in blockchain I don't know what and um I wanted to do a podcast is the truth
but I was scared and uh so anyway so it was a little bit it was a little while before I then actually started overpriced jpegs and so then okay so now fast forward us to overpriced yeah so I quit my job at the Venture studio in March of last year or thereabout and um wasn't sure what I wanted to do want to do something with crypto found a blockchain super early stage startup called block block that was you know calling itself a lab right they were sort of just like playing around in crypto which seemed like the perfect place for me to go if I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do I was like cool I'll like play around with these guys for you know a little while and see what happens um and so I started to tweet more about about nfts and and blockchain and Ryan
Sean Adams who is one of the co-founders of bankless uh Brian and David both knew me from my yang days um David had been a big Yang fan he had actually volunteered at a Yang rally in Seattle that I've been overseeing so he's talked about this before he's like it's so funny like I kind of knew of you as like Yang's right-hand woman back like years ago um and then I had helped to co-host Yang's podcast a few times even after I left the campaign um when he was running for mayor of New York he was really busy so I would sometimes step in and post an episode of his podcast so Ryan and David had both heard me on that we'd actually interviewed Ryan at one point for the for the podcast um and so as they started me saw me starting to like tweet more about this
Ryan dm'd me and said hey would you ever want to start like an nft show we want to plant a flag around nfts on the bankless side but it's not really our you know main focus would it be something you'd want to do and I was like this is wild before doing this I absolutely want to do this um because again that's sort of what I'd wanted to do back in like March when I was leading the Venture Studio but felt you know imposter syndrome and like I'm still so new to the space and the idea of building an audience from scratch is I think really overwhelming naturally and so I just felt incredibly lucky to have it kind of come together that way kudos to the to the bankless boys I mean they're the ones that connected us boys uh we love Ronnie David we're all big
fans uh I was just on a call with them they're the freaking best they they are the best um I'm curious you you you know you obviously heard about crypto you got super into crypto but then you kind of went the web three route right nfts you talk a lot about business models on overpriced jpegs uh similar to the stuff that we're talking about on our podcast what why kind of like why did you immerse yourself in web3 like what was it that really um I don't know matters to you about this space like what are you seeing in this that like excites you so much yes well I think those who are too stupid to defy end up in nfts I'm just kidding is no I really Kyle's smart enough to defy
I am not I'm I'm kidding um but I but I I did like kind of get into D5 I was like well this is you know just the yield farming I just can't day in and day out this could I just can't do it you know um both like it's just it's a little boring to me you know a day in and day out and then B I do think it's just like a typical a particular kind of brain wiring um and so for me the culture side of nfts was like the first thing that that Drew me in you know just like clearly there's something here um I'm sure we'll dive into it a little bit more about like what I think is so exciting about this space um but but yeah it was the kind of the culture that grabbed me first I think um
I think the the stages of the internet like the internet is really just about connecting and I think you have this this like internet 1.0 which like connected us to information it allowed us to figure out like you know the wine tanning you know you don't have to use an encyclopedia anymore to figure out what kind of wine whatever the hell you want to know about wine or whatever right and and that was sort of like connectivity there and then you had the the social media side which was another obviously very obvious kind of connectivity and connecting you to other people Etc and I really think nfts are just that next layer of connectivity and and um bringing creators closer to their fans being obviously a huge one bringing Brands closer to their audiences and all of that ends in monetization whether it's because you're selling the
nft itself um or because you now have a closer relationship with somebody and so you monetize them because they're now going to buy more of your Lattes or more of your t-shirts or more of your Consulting classes or whatever and I think it's just um it just feels like the next wave of connection which is sort of I guess like what Humanity's all about or whatever so I'm sure you could make some deep point about this you know but but like you just had that feeling I just got you got that I got that feeling very early from it even before I could probably articulated that as like a thesis and um I found it really interesting I just want to pull on that threat of connection because I I think you you really you are on to the really what I think a lot of us believe is the whole
point here I mean it's the point of humanity right like we know that we are social beings it is what allow has allowed us to be the most powerful species on Earth is that we can coordinate and we can do things together and blockchain technology allows us to coordinate in a new way and we just never had that before and it's it is it's so exciting to think about the ability to have ownership in something and not just be a fan or a follower or an audience member but actually feel like a Community member um now we can get into the sort of the Nuance of like what the
difference is between Community member and owner and nfts and all that I mean there's a thread that we could pull on but I do think that there is I mean that's for me at least what I found early on was so exciting about this space was this opportunity to feel a part of a community digitally that I had never really felt that same feeling before I just felt like a follower before totally there's there's also just something inherently fun about being early which obviously won't last forever but like that also is fun when you see it and you feel like the rest of the world doesn't totally get it yet like I had that with Yang where I was really early on the and campaign and it it's you know I I I've gotten the payoff a
little bit of like being early somewhere and then kind of seeing it go more mainstream and I think um I think that's really fun and the digital ownership piece like you know I think sometimes we're like oh like the world doesn't get nfts which is true obviously um but it's not necessarily because they haven't heard good explanations right like digital ownership is a perfectly good explanation for nfts that a lot of people have heard they just still don't get it like like it's such a paradigm shift and but once it clicks like you can't go back you know like I recently had to you know I logged into something using my gmail address and I was like I'm annoyed I'm annoyed that I'm logging in that like my entryway that like my walk through this doorway is being
controlled overseen monetized by this company that I'm getting nothing from and that even even as somebody who has been into this for a year and a half or more you know arguably like that wouldn't have bugged me two years ago you know like I and now it does like it's fully clicked in that way where I'm like this is irritating that somebody else gets to own this interaction that I'm having I should own this interaction that I'm having that's the thing is I think most people just haven't the problem hasn't hit them yet do you know what I mean so like until they experience the problem like for me my my Facebook account got shut down years ago and I was running my business on Facebook it was a podcast and everything in the health space and uh that's how I had everything I had a big
following on there whatever and just one day I woke up and it was gone don't even know why still to this day uh so like for me the moment I learned about went through I was like oh well this is definitely needed this is obvious but most people I think they just they haven't had that happen to them yet but I think like it's happening more and more frequently so I think people will start to and then once you experience web3 for the first time you're like oh okay now I see what's happening here right so I think they just need to experience it first and then but I don't know it takes a while for that to happen yeah there's a funny Dynamic too like there's people who to me clearly should get nfts who don't an example I've been given recently is I I love the company
kryptoys I won't dive too much into it if but if folks don't know it like you know digital toy collectibles modeled off of LOL surprise dolls where like the biggest Trend in in toys of the last like five years has been these like dolls that come in these boxes where you can't see what the doll looks like and then you open it and they've got different Rarities I mean it's literally an nft it's just a physical doll right and so they've they've really modeled their this toy company after that and it's digital toys digital Collectibles and they have a partnership with Masters of the Universe though like you know 80s popular franchise and so Masters of the Universe are releasing digital Collectibles with cryptoys and and the Masters of the Universe account was tweeting about this and of course like the just hate and vitriol in the comments of people being
like what the heck and I was dying laughing because there's some dude who posted he's like you know what like you know like [ __ ] this can I curse are we cursing on us stupid yeah I just did it so I guess we are now um he's like screw this and he posts a screenshot of him returning his Masters of the Universe like you know collectible that he had ordered and he's like and I'm like this is so delusional like if if I went to like my girlfriends and was like Hey like do you what do you think of this master of the universe digital collectible they'd be like that's stupid why would I spend money on that and I'd be like okay cool like I'm totally sympathetic to that world view because you don't spend your money on this kind of a thing anyway you know but
to be a grown man who already spends his money on vinyl toys and the best thing is turn label said like you know we're turning Master of the Universe whatever like um toys age 6 to 10 and adult collectors you know what I'm like you're already buying children's toys to just put on your mantle you know and like this is just the a version of that that can be seen by more people and that can unlock additional perks and you're so mad that you think this is such a scam you're returning the children's toy that you bought like it that stuff doesn't click more readily I still don't quite understand but it's just a different people have to just get into the mindset in all fairness it was all of our faults that everyone hates nfts like oh I went a little bit insane
over the last I mean the name of your show is titled overpriced jpegs for a reason yeah exactly it's like sort of tongue-in-cheek and I'm also being dead serious serious like are we are you kidding me people you know like what are we doing this is uh we deserve a lot of hate we get I'd love to hear I mean when was it that you started overpriced jpegs what was the date one year anniversary is coming up uh November 12th the first episode came out wow the peak of the bull market oh literally could not have timed the top any better I have a top signal yeah you basically were oh my God the day I get out of podcasting is the day you should start buying you know well I was I was gonna ask what was it like to sort of be the nft podcast as
nfts became a thing but I guess you basically became the nft podcast as I didn't see you stop because yeah 100 I could not have timed it worse okay so let me alter my question a little bit then uh you did grow very very fast though right and you did become the kind of the biggest and I think probably the most listened to nft Pockets or one of them anyway you're getting on some big guests uh meeting some really cool people what's that experience been like over the last basically a year yeah it's so amazing and you know I like I just tell all my friends to get into web3 because when you're in an emerging space and a couple of things happen like like a you just get opportunities so much faster than you could you know you know other play places um and and and people want other people
in this space to succeed right like when you're in a pie that's growing people in the space are excited to see others who are doing well because there isn't the same sense that like you're taking from me it doesn't feel like a zero-sum game right like you have so many Industries or coming from like the political like politics for example where there's so much like just zero-sum mentalities you know trying to tear down the other candidates like it's so and it's the opposite in web3 where people just want to see you thrive so um I you know just like so many Pinch Me moments that are so cool and like people I've gotten to have on the podcast um you know I had Ashley Benson on the show which probably doesn't mean anything to you guys but she was like one of the stars of Pretty Little Liars
which was like a very big show when I was in like eighth and ninth grade and you know she had 26 million followers on Instagram I don't think the web 3 world cared at all that she was on my podcast but I was like this is crazy like do you know what I mean like I've been podcasting for you know six months and I have 20 000 followers like what is Ashley Benson doing talking to me um I went to dinner at Paris Hilton's house like that was the same thing I actually said that to Paris I was like like do you enjoy this like why if I was you like I would be like why am I talking to these people I was like I feel like I'm going upstairs yeah she laughed she was like no it's like so yeah it's been it's been really I
just feel so incredibly fortunate well congrats on the one year anniversary coming up that's super exciting well done thank you I have a fun uh I'm doing something fun for it tell us about should I share should I share um I'm like trying to figure out how much I want to say because I do want some of it to be a surprise but um so I'm airdropping for every guest who's been on the show some of my my awesome like big social media supporters people who have been sharing the show a lot on Twitter and you know I just have built out this you know bit of an audience who's been so lovely to me on social so I want to try and reward folks um we are air dropping those folks um an nft that has been designed in collaboration with a really awesome
artist who will remain nameless and uh so that'll that airdrop should be happening on the 12th like on the on the one year anniversary and then in January those nfts will be redeemable for a bottle of overpriced gin so you'll be able to go on it's there's some limitations right because there's like legal laws around liquor so like I can't do it International and not every state applies so you know if you're having if you fall in a category we're International or you're a state this doesn't work for it you know we can you can add me or DM somebody we'll chat about it but um but where you can get you'll get like a bespoke bottle of gin with the art label on it that we designed so it'll be like a collector's edition of of gin um in addition to being some kick-ass gin that's been you
know like I sampled it beforehand and you know the whole process so I'm really excited about that I just wanted to do something kind of different to commemorate it and I love the tying digital and and physical um thing I think that's a great uh a great way to bring just extra value to people in this the endless conversation of like when utility I'm like get yourself drunk there's your utility you know what I mean like that's it um so I think it's very interesting on how content creators are going to use web3 like this right in in terms of using nfts uh and by the way there's a bigger announcement coming at the end of the show that we you know for those in the intro we got a bigger one that was not the main announcement there's a
bigger one so uh stick around for that um depends on what you get excited most excited about though you know like I don't want them to think you know there's going to be some people who are give me that I guess if you really like Jin then absolutely yeah there's something that's like gin drinkers or sociopaths there's something about that where it's like I'm all about Mezcal I don't do gin I'm a tequila Mezcal girl not to blow anything up but I think probably year two will probably be a tequila or on that screen right well I'm gonna have to get an American address so I can get on that list get an American address and start sharing your [ __ ] on Twitter Kyle I think we've solved instead of like a threat I gotta ask how you got all your
followers how did you collect all these addresses of people who have been like sharing stuff right like did you just scan them and ask them or do you have like a CRM or some sort of way to collect this information or yeah if you have any recommendations we haven't really finished the process yet so um if you're hearing this start sharing my stuff you might get it um uh it's been deeply manual and it's done and I like feel like I'm probably doing it wrong but you know I've kind of looked at like I've gone back honestly for months it was kind of time consuming to look at like people who retweeted my episodes or tweeted about them periods you know I try to respond anytime somebody shares something of mine so I like looked at all my tweets and replies and then you know certain uh certain
handles start showing up a lot and so um but I yeah and then we're going to be dming people we started it a little bit but it's not been comprehensive I've got two weeks still I figure I got I got two weeks um I got a meeting next week two weeks is a lifetime in crypto right it's so much time like only two weeks how the heck are you gonna do this yeah yeah no I'm lying I got so much time I can't remember the name of the company and I feel bad because I would like to say it but uh anyway he created this thing where it's like a CRM but for web3 and so like you can track everyone who interacts on like your Twitter and like uh what kind of activity they have Etc but then it connects them to their
wallet because or something they can connect everything and so you see their on-chain activity their Twitter activity and there was a few other platforms and I was like oh damn that's really cool I could see that yeah valuable but anyway maybe that's right I should use that I know well and you know well we'll kind of talk about this because I've never done a token before for the show and and we can maybe talk about why but I kind of liked this as like the you know my kind of initial I'll have an initial set of wallets now that I'll have kind of interacted with that I can you know presumably not make any promises but like kind of add to over time and that it will kind of become essentially my um you know my like nft Collective you know like the people that I kind of reward as
uh as I continue on in in this space um so let's just talk quickly who are you doing this airdrop with because I I love that you have to watch the company that focuses on this yes and I was going to mention them so I'm so glad you prompted that liquid collections is the name of the company um they very recently launched I've been advising kit codec as their CEO and founder um one of the co-founders I should say I guess um and I've been working with him for months now he went through the meta Angels like the angel Labs if you guys were familiar with Angel Labs sort of like you know incubator um and I was a mentor I Need A lot's mentor and got partnered with kit and it's just been amazing so he founded liquor.com he had like the liquor.com URL uh and like 20 years ago I want to
say or something but built it into this you know really big bed elk brand and so um has just Partners in every layer of the supply chain stack Etc um around babalk and so um and oh gosh I hope he doesn't I'm not I'm not I don't want to butcher this but like one of the really powerful ways that nfts you know help with his model is You can predict fulfillment in advance right like one of the challenges with liquor is like like or let me say it this way you only have the biggest celebrities that launch alcohol Brands right it's your George Clooney's and your Kendall Jenners and your complete complete a-lists um for a variety of reasons there's regulatory stuff right but it's
like you need to know that you're gonna sell out before you put a bunch of investment into it um and nfts allow a way for more like micro influencers you know even if that means a million followers or whatever to to be able to launch liquor collectives and have a better sense of like what the Fulfillment needs are going to be up front and there's again also like regulatory elements to this that are made a lot easier because you know the Fulfillment up front like obviously any anything is easier to do if you know how what quantities you need up front but there's a whole extra layer to it when you're talking about such a regulated industry like bevelk and so this really unlocks this capacity for micro influencers to start doing liquor drops in ways that really wasn't or you know wine drops in ways that really weren't
possible before um and so they're starting partnering with with some like web3 native artists and Brands and um I don't I think well I don't want to give anything I don't want to make any of their announcements for them so um but I'll say they're really cool and I'm super excited to kind of be one of the very first drops because um I just think it's such a fun way to to reward people do do you have to burn the nft in order to get I'm not making anything involved here I'm not I thought about it but I think at the end of the day like I just want to reward folks and I want to I want to Mark folks right who were here early and who supported me early and I want that like to live in your digital
wallet for forever that Mark I mean it's not Soul bounce you could also sell it if you wanted to and give somebody else that Mark I suppose but um and uh and then I also want them to enjoy the Gin so I'm not making folks choose it's not a burn situation but I did debate it I I am curious how I mean we we have a lot of creators who follow us and listen to our podcast as well and I think a lot of us are trying to figure out you know how does how do you use web3 to sort of monetize and kind of build your creator business um you know we've written a bunch of articles about this and talked a lot about this but I'm curious on you know you're now almost a year into yours um are you I guess one are you planning
to kind of web three do this the web three-way are you going to do it kind of the old way um and what does it look like to be like what are you thinking about when you think well I have this podcast I have this voice I have you know you're on different platforms how do you plan to do this in the web three-way or what's what are you thinking yeah so this has been such a debate for me I imagine for you guys too because you guys didn't you haven't done a token as part of web through Academy right yeah and so it's funny we have a Dao so it's not ours we have a dow from our community they launched a token kind of alongside of us with us but it was it was their decision not ours it's very cool yeah I think um
that's probably the most web three way right it's just like the community just like Rises up on their own um I get asked you know I've been asked a lot like you know when are you doing an nft are you doing an nft and I think like the most maybe it's always like the most honest answer for a while there and during the bull market was like I am too much of an introvert to handle like a full-on nft project or I especially during the bowl given the way things were where like I already feel incredibly beholden to and indebted to my audience like I'm so grateful to anybody who listens to my show and I think there was this Dynamic of like you know that being said like if somebody DMS me at 10 p.m on a Friday night like I don't feel like I have to respond to
you just because you say you're a fan of the podcast but if you're like a token holder who's now spent money on me and helped to fund this career that I get to have like that puts a whole new level on things and watching what other Founders were going through which is just like the the expectation that you'd be always on it was kind of like a know thyself thing for me where I was like I can't handle that right now like I need to I I put so much energy into making the show good and I want to make it better and I'm thinking about so many different things and I can't feel like I have to always be on to talk to people respond to people give people what they want from me um and I could have just seen myself getting really lost in that also to the
detriment of the show like I have to have the space to kind of think and again I'm an introvert like I need alone time I need to like not talk to anybody so um because of how new this space is you know it felt like for a little while there there was no way to drop an nft Project without without setting up some sort of crazy expectations um you even if it was free even if it was like it didn't matter right people had expectations around it that will not always be the case right like I think I think you know these are like social media accounts all creators all companies all whatever will have nfts um and there'll be varying degrees of activity around those nfts um and
that's where I want to live it's like I love the idea of people who are like really love the show who listen to the show regularly getting poapps getting nfts that show their Affinity there and I absolutely will I'm sure end up doing things as I'm already kind of doing to reward those those people um but it needs to be in a way that has like reasonable expectations where the expectation is like maybe there's a year where there's nothing in particular that gets done um or or the expectation really more because I doubt that'll probably even end up happening but like because I probably will do something every year but the expectation isn't that you can just access me all the time um so that was really what kept me from doing it during the Bull Run was just watching what other Founders were going
through and feeling like this doesn't work for me and who I am as a person right now I think it's an awesome model like awesome we talked about this Austin hurwitz launched he's launched an initial like 15 nfts for his podcast that he's doing it's like a boot dropping thing Austin is amazing such a big fan of his one big idea to go check out his podcast and you know he's like I don't know if he's an introvert or an extrovert but he's just like always idealing dropping links texting you know texting me stuff like he's clearly somebody who just is constantly happy to be in that in some sort of dialogue or engagement so I think for him it really makes sense to do something like this and to start by bootstrapping his community with an nft um it just didn't make sense for me at
the time and now I kind of like this idea of doing it the way I am which is like having a special specific initiative dropping tokens um I'll probably do a pull-up thing as part of the podcast at some point um and people who have like have the poet because they listen to the show we'll get stuff like I'm starting to warm up to doing it um but it's definitely almost certainly for me gonna start as like uh I'm giving you value and and um and it'll be a while before I probably use it as a way to to monetize um if I if I ever do does that make sense that was a long rambly answer to y'all but that was that's how I feel I think it was a great answer and one could have to you for like having the
like you know strength I guess on yourself like mental capacity to be like you know what this is craziness what's going on I'm not gonna get involved right now even though you could have right uh and you probably could have done really well on that so good for you for that I also think like the nice thing about this nft space right now is I mean volumes are down like crazy and everyone's like is nfts dead whatever the thing I see is we're learning so much about what actually worked and what didn't work and with everything going on with creative royalties and CC zero and all this it's just like and then the whole membership of subscriptions and it's like right now over the last few months I feel like the industry is learning so much and so it's probably better that you just kind of cruise for
a little bit and was like let's see what's going on here you know and then you can go and make a much smarter decision I think yeah I I totally agree and I think you know I I think a lot about getting in early versus not getting in early especially when it comes to Brands like is it better that Star Trek has been in this since 2019 or would it have been better if they jumped in once models were more fully established CNN maybe even a much better example right like should they have just waited you know or is it good that they like dabbled and played around and did something right and but I think that applies more to Brands who aren't already like I'm already tracking the space very closely so it's not as if
um and yes you learn certain things by actively doing or actively launching a project but I've launched projects through companies I've advised on Project launches like I I know how it goes so I think for somebody for people like us who are who are in the space it's not like we aren't picking up the learnings um anyway and and yeah can then kind of see where the dust settles to really know which Avenue we end up wanting to to play in um so but you know there's lots of there's lots of ways to go right here in my opinion I also just worry for these projects like we have not figured out what what the exit route is for people who are like okay like this was a season of my life and I'm now exiting this nft
business like we haven't given people that option at this point and that makes me very nervous for a lot of folks because I feel for people on all sides I totally understand the frustration on the part of holders who have project Founders who maybe want to leave or leave or whatever um and that's a terrible situation to find yourself in and I also feel for those Founders who I I'm sure did not go in some I'm sure women with bad intentions but many of whom didn't go in with bad intentions but are humans who are like If This Were a normal business they could just say sorry to the investors and walk away and okay that happens in business every damn day and feel like they can't now because they have a mob of 10 000 people not quite whatever it is that's going to yell at
them and call them a rugger and a scammer and it's like that's like a really toxic Dynamic um that's been set up for I think a number of folks the the lifetime membership model with 10 000 people is just I don't know I still am not fully on board with it yet to me it seems a bit crazy uh I and it's not just lifetime this thing is on a blockchain and it lives for forever so it's going to outlive you and your children [Laughter] what I mean I think expectations is is really that what this comes to we've we've created unreasonable expectations on the part of the holders right and it's I mean it's
really it's our fault like I mean I guess it's it's really it's everybody's fault in that like we created these projects that said okay here you can have lifetime access we also and I think we're now coming to realize we're not owners right as a holder you're not an owner we have VCS coming in that are buying true ownership in these companies and we're sitting there as in a few holders being like well who are we then what's what's our rights here and it's leading to confusion and I mean this is what happens with any new technology like we have to go through these growing pains but like you said there is I I can see both sides I always am a believer in that you play in sandboxes early because if you play in the sandbox even if you
build a sand castle that fell down you learn from building and then the next time you can build on top of that but at the same time there's also great value in patience absolutely absolutely and I think if you are somebody who knows you're a really good Community Builder and that and like you love that and you love sitting in these chat rooms and these forums and whatever and you want to get into the Creator game I think it's probably a really smart move for you to launch an nft to kind of launch that First Community to be your first Community like there's a tremendous power to like really building up a community via an nft for your podcast or show or whatever creative Endeavor you want to pursue um so I don't want to like you know
blanketly say don't do that but I do think it's important that people go in why I wide open and just you know assess based on who they are as a person like what you know and what like what level of pressure can you handle of like how much is it going to affect you if you have a bunch of people screaming at you and that's where like for me I think I I think I can somewhat handle that in the sense like I've dealt with like Internet Hate a bit in the past or whatever but um but I would feel really beholden anyways you know you got yeah I think you guys get it what about you haven't either what about social tokens have you put any thought into a search token instead of nfts or because you're overpriced jpegs you kind of have to go with the
NFC yeah I feel like I've always felt like I should do the nft thing you know I also like I I love the I like the idea of pairing like visual art you know and like really giving it kind of this like full I mean that that's part of it too right is I I don't think I'm probably in like the final brand stage for overpriced jpegs um like I've got sweet branding it's what it is for now I I like it but I think I'll probably they'll I'll probably evolve it at some point into like a uh um I don't know a different brand look and at that point maybe I'll dovetail sort of like a brand look to my NFD I don't know those kind of things I think it's just the nft side given like the space that I play in what I cover and
and there's the fun of it felt like probably where I'd want to go what have you guys thought about all this you guys you guys have your Dow but you don't you haven't launched an nft yeah we haven't launched nft we haven't honestly talked much about launching a collection of MCS have we Jay um and I think we're still just kind of playing in the sandbox mind like we've launched like poapps and things and we did that just to kind of play around um really we're just focused on building our community um and I mean we're really more on the learning side so we're looking at you know how do we improve our newsletter and maybe go you know the premium side of newsletter and do we nft that's like one of the things we're actually working on building right now is token gating our community and the events and things
that we run in our community and doing it with nft subscriptions um so trying to use nft but in a different type of business model and maybe kind of experiment and Lead the Way in there because there's some people doing it but not really at scale yet and I think it's the tech is getting very close to being pretty good for that um and like in our in our traditional business in our agency that's what we work with a lot of subscription-based type models for creators and so we were like how can we do the web3 version of that so we're sort of working with a few people and trying to like figure out what we should do there but in terms of like a 10 000 empty collection I mean it's not for me I don't think yeah yeah I don't know about you but uh
have you put any thought into it yeah I mean I think that like on our end we're lucky in that we we don't need the money so we have the benefit of patience and don't get me wrong like the money would be nice to grow faster and there's lots you can do with that but we don't need it and so that's allowed us to sort of sit back and I think where we've come to is really in the last month is we do want to do something but we just kept looking at this like 10 000 token holders lifetime access and we're just not convinced that that is a sustainable business model you know we at zenica on the podcast like months ago he said he was like he I'm not convinced he's like
he's done this and he's sitting there being like well Creator royalties are going to zero probably I mean hopefully not for everything but they will for a lot so what do you where's your where's your recurring Revenue stream you have no recurring Revenue stream but yet so then so then what we came to was our belief was like okay the only way to do the 10 000 or whatever the the lifetime access is if your community is going to build with you okay but now you're talking about something completely different now you've got to go basically build a dow and do more the truth Labs model and give 50 to the Dow and fund the Dow and try to build together okay cool great model believe that works but like like you said know thyself do you want to go and dive into running a Dao
and you know coordinating internet strangers basically right like totally and and when you think about like wanting to really get the most bang for your buck right and in any group of people it's the 80 20 rule or whatever it is 90 10. it's you know like most of the output that's worth anything is going to come from a small fraction of that group but now you have and now you have to figure out or ideally you want the kind of compensation to reflect that but now you're like ostracizing 90 of your community that thinks they're doing more than they're actually doing and like like these are some of the realities of human coordination that you know we cannot blockchain doesn't like fundamentally change human nature you know or like some of the realities that you're gonna bump up against so I
totally and also I mean the thing is I built a couple businesses in my in my early life so far and uh but I've always I never really wanted to get investment up front because it's just a lot of pressure to have VC or to have like an investor and like I hate reporting to people and I hate like projecting for the next two years or five years I don't know what I've been doing five years are you kidding what I'm gonna do tomorrow and uh so like I've never liked that model and so I've always kind of bootstrapped everything I've done and now to think about well now I gotta do that for 10 000 people I was just like that's even crazier there's no way totally you know I I think um
I don't know was I saying this on this podcast or was I saying it to you I was talking to UJ yesterday but like you know increasingly I feel like nfts are this like Kind of Perfect vehicle in late stage capitalism where you know we're trying to get like the last drops of lemon juice out of the lemons this is like a very negative way to frame it I'm gonna like give it a positive spin at the end you know but it's like we've got these lemons we're not making like a radically new lemons I mean like the Space Race I think is an example where you might have like really fundamentally like new amazing technology come out but like otherwise like we're sitting on these islands that we got and nfts are an incredibly powerful way to extract those like the the last of the juice or
the more juice out of this lemon that you've already squeezed to death and that sounds very extractive which I think is also why nfts have gotten such a bad name because people have seen it it's like a very extractive industry it's been a very extractive industry up to this point but it's also about that flip side you're extracting because you're creating more value and and if these are are a way for you to think about how to create more value for um fans and customers and whatever and and then therefore to monetize them and um I didn't already say that on this podcast right no I'm starting to like lose my mind and be like what have I said this into who I spend way too much time talking into a microphone um so anyway so I I do feel like that's sort of my theory on on what these
things are but but again I think that can take a lot of different forms which can mean monetizing them super down the line which is where I'm kind of leaning right now which is like right now just do the value creation side of things using nfts and don't worry about the extraction side because we've seen so much of the extraction side take place um and because it does just set up like you like if you want to be an honorable person right and you don't want to like ruin your reputation like value extraction and value creation have to go hand in hand so if you're extracting up front it means you got to be creating at some point and you're saving that creating for down the line I am somebody and I think you guys are too are like would rather do the creating up front
and the extracting later like I would way rather feel like I'm owed a debt for lack of a better term than than oh a debt you know and I think that's that's sort of the question you have to ask yourself and I think nfts can work for both models but we've only kind of seen it in the extracting first model so anyway great no that's a really good point I love that that's also why I think I mean using social tokens or at least the way that we did it anyway with our community is they launched the Dow and and so the nice thing about it is like that wasn't attended I mean I don't know how many there are in there but there's it's not that it was launched specifically and now they rely on us and we have to go and produce and build it's
like they're like hey no no we support you guys we want to build with you but they can build their own products they can do their own thing they can I love it plus we're very in line in what we're doing um but it's not like a doubt that that has to rely on us and it's like when when this when that when right uh and so it's I think it's been a much better experience that way I don't know how I would feel if it was if it's the other way that we're talking about so very interesting take so it's great yeah unlock protocol is the nft membership protocol for web3 Content subscriptions Community Access event tickets are all forms of memberships one of the most common business models for creators and entrepreneurs today building an nft membership opens many new possibilities
for your members everything from tailored multi-platform experiences to the ability to sell an unfinished subscription on secondary markets these are things just not possible in web 2. however in order for this business model to work creators need nfts which are time bound or have built-in recurring payments unlock protocol does this for your nfts that are yet with a few simple steps you can create your own nft contract without code what WordPress has done for websites unlock protocol is doing for membership nfts if you're an nft Creator you can't rely on royalties as they are likely going to zero you
need recurring Revenue you need unlocked at web3 Academy We Believe nft memberships are the future of business and community and that's why we decided to build on unlock learn more at unlock Dash protocol.com all right let's uh let's do the the big announcement uh this is uh airing on November third so I believe the announcement lines up exactly with what I think it's perfect yeah this will it'll either be coming out yesterday or today okay what's what's coming up I feel like I feel like we like framed this up like you know I'm not giving everybody a million dollars this isn't like an Oprah situation where I'm like if you listen to my show you
get it I'm not a millionaire now we gotta have ways to get people to listen to our whole podcast oh yeah maybe we should have done the overpriced gin thing last no um so uh earlier this year I went to Puerto Rico and I shot a documentary I went in February so I have been basically teasing this documentary for like eight months now and it is finally cut it is coming out if you've listened to this it's probably out now I'm so excited about this because for anybody if you don't know anything about like Puerto Rico it has gotten a lot of coverage when it comes to crypto and blockchain but almost exclusively in the context of it's a tax Haven and it's a they they have something called act 60
which is if you move there you know and you're not you move and become a resident of Puerto Rico you basically don't have to pay capital gains tax so if you're somebody who trades crypto that's obviously super appeal like and um so there's been this kind of crypto colonizer narrative that has come out that's valid right where you have a lot of people moving to the island driving up rent prices hurting people who are locally there because they can't afford housing anymore Etc you have people like Logan Paul who's somebody who's really easy to like vilify and who's like your classic just like crypto bro like kind of cringe figure who moved to Puerto Rico so all of this coverage has been about that and uh what I learned just because I started to talk to some folks is like
you actually have an incredible group of local native Puerto Ricans who are really into blockchain and Puerto Rico is a really natural fit for blockchain adoption for nft and adoption because you have um just an incredibly incredibly artistic Community right music I mean Bad Bunny um Daddy Yankee you have some International you know uh musicians who have come out of Puerto Rico and then also like visual artists I mean they have entire you know like communities that like murals are on every street corner on every building like it's a super art heavy community and so um you know you have a lot of artists there who started to embrace nfts and
digital art and it's been it's like broken up in a whole new Revenue stream income a lot of work for for artists in Puerto Rico and then you also have some really amazing Technical and engineering schools so there's there's a wiring for kind of the technical side of this as well and then you blend that the final piece I'll say is that I'm being long-winded about this but is you have this um you have a really corrupt government situation and a lot of that came to light after Hurricane Maria which was just devastating for the island and um there's just a complete lack of transparency and so you have a lot of people who started to turn towards blockchain um from the transparency that that technology can bring and and to like human coordination that it could bring
to to fix some of the problems that Puerto Ricans are feeling all the time so anyway so I went spent four days basically shooting with these amazing people in Puerto Rico um to try and highlight their stories because I was just so frustrated seeing that the only thing that was getting coverage in Puerto Rico was like like the transplants and the colonizers quote unquote and it was totally erasing all of these other people um that are doing really cool things on the island and it's sort of something that I think happens a little bit at a macro level in like web3 you know where we're like I don't know like they're I sometimes worry that when we're like oh there's like no women in web 3 or whatever that like it actually just turns off women from joining when the reality is it's like let's just like
there's actually a [ __ ] ton of women in web3 doing like a bunch of awesome stuff and like let's just like talk about it and like that like talk about what they're doing forget the whole like I don't know making such a thing of it um so anyway uh this documentary is coming out it's out now I would love for people to go check it out and metamask is was the sponsor on it my partner on it um and we've partnered upset for every view the documentary gets uh for the first week so for the next basically six or seven days um we will donate a dollar to Hurricane Relief efforts because they actually had a more recent hurricane right before hurricane Ian a lot of people still without power you know food struggling because again they have a pretty dysfunctional government situation um so
not getting the care they need so if you go and watch the documentary right now a dollar will be donated to this awesome effort we're trying to get ten thousand dollars uh of course in total donate there and um so we'll link to it please go check it out and while you're on my YouTube channel just like go and subscribe you know that's the other thing you can do you know because you're gonna be there you're gonna be liking the content I'm gonna be putting out more content so you know it feels like a natural fit for you might get some overpriced gin or Mezcal next year you know you have to be there no promises but if you're watching the content and then you want to tweet about it anyway you know like just it's a win-win-win-win-win situation for all of us so um that's an amazing amazing initiative
though Carly I I absolutely love it I can't wait to watch the the documentary myself um I'm curious walk us through a bit of the store what was it like so like did you just you went to Puerto Rico on your own for a little bit uh well not on your own I guess you had some camera people around you yeah I work for the team locally in Puerto Rico sorry I had to cut you off no that's okay I go on tell me about it thank you I'm such a good listener when I'm asking the questions but then when I'm being asked questions I'm like yes yes let me get to my answer um so I don't even know what my question is oh I you know I do this for a living I know where you're going Kyle you know I too I
do interview people I mean you did our intro so I guess you went through Academy now hosted Pro I'll ask myself I'll just interview myself gosh so it's actually it's kind of funny I I actually was there with Andrew Yang uh he and his wife and and Zach there's a little group of us that went Andrew and Evelyn uh got married in Puerto Rico they love Puerto Rico so they were going anyway and they're like hey do you guys want to come it's like we've got this big house we're renting a Puerto Rico do you guys want to come so that was actually one of the things that sort of precipitated it as well um and and then I had I worked with a A Team a film team in Puerto Rico to shoot it uh just amazing people that you'll get to see in the film this woman
Christina she goes by art by bonesy who makes um these gorgeous paintings and then they're they're also an AR right so you hold your phone up and the whole scope of the painting just changes and like expands and it's just gorgeous gorgeous work so like just excited for people hopefully to see artists like her and and you know my my hope would be somebody like goes and buys her stuff because I think she's incredible and she does nfts with them as well um and then for for your guys's purposes I think an interesting one is a guy named Juan Salgado he's an internationally renowned tattoo artist I mean he's won like hundreds of tattoo Awards he's tattooed Ricky Martin Bad Bunny like you know work with with some celebrities um and he earlier this year actually the
week we were there so in February launched an nft project called the tattoo skulls Society where moving forward the only way to get a tattoo from him is going to be to own one of his uh nfts and he really wants us to become a broader artist Collective right like he felt like this was a way to free himself up to do a bunch of other kinds of art that he loves um as well where like he does now you know he'll do like actually paintings and murals and and he can reward his holders his nft holders with with that um and I just sort of gave him some freedom to play around with his different art modes because um not everybody's going to redeem his
tattoo sort of all at once is I think effectively the thinking and um yeah hopefully and so um so anyways that so that was really cool and we had a great conversation and you know I think there's like still a question mark you know for for him and when we talk about business models of like will this be more profitable or not you know relative to like his old business and I think the the answer to that kind of remains to be seen But what I feel like you see with a lot of these folks who are trying this early is like it's not about he clearly thinks he's going to be able to like maintain his lifestyle on it right it's not like you know gonna um it's not going to hurt him and and again it's giving him more flexibility now in ways
that he really wanted um as an artist so so he's really cool I mean I could talk more about all so is there is there only I just got to ask is there only one collection then because like he's a good example of I love the concept of tokenizing his time career essentially in his career and the there's a cool speculative nature to that in that if you are a supporter now you get to get in and support him um and then perhaps he becomes even a bigger tattoo artist down the road and it's very difficult to get in to see him in the only way to get the nft so that's that's interesting but the one thing I wonder though is again I come back to the sustainable business model thing if royalties go to zero then does he never
is this his only time that he is making Revenue off of his main career or does he have plans to do another collection down the road so it's a really good question obviously when we were filming this it was February and we were not having the royalty conversation and there was sort of an assumption that like royalties were a thing that we're gonna be a part of this so I have not followed up with him since all of the Creator royalty stuff has gone down um what his plan was um was to lead the way but to ultimately bring other I think probably tattoo artists but also just other Puerto Rican artists kind of into to build like a whole Collective out I don't know if that means maybe doing other drops where he's working with the artists and maybe takes a small percentage because he's
sort of helping them guide the way and they're leveraging his existing audience and um I could see that being another way where he continues to expand the collection without being like dilutive to it um because he wants this to become a broader a broader Community for artists that um that he's sort of building out with this is like their their anger project um I I should follow up with him and be like hey so with the royalties being this weird question mark uh what are you thinking um I mean you you have to hope that with a case like that I've always said the thing that might keep royalties alive are buyers because presumably if you're buying into a project you want to
see it succeed and you you want them to then you know be rewarded obviously like that's a high level of Education that you kind of expect then from buyers to be able to go check and see that there's actually a really happening but if there was ever a case where I feel like that would be extra true it would be in a situation like this right where like you're presumably buying in because you love this artist you want to get you want one of his tattoos and you you know he needs recurring rabbit you know you know he needs income and so you would be um extra scrupulous about making sure that you know you're buying from a place where he's getting a royalty but I that also is probably someone fantastic and I can see the case where you know he he develops a Marketplace and it's part of
this Collective and in that Marketplace royalties are are something that everybody honors because of the ux and the website and the experience talks about the need to pay royalties and how it goes back to the artist in this case it's not just because I think one of the things that we all struggle with around royalties is there's clearly a difference between a royalty going to an artist like that makes so much sense to all of us right like how many I I watched the documentary and um I don't remember the name Christina talked about how when she makes physical art she has no idea what happens to it like it just disappears Into The Ether she doesn't know if it's resold she doesn't know if it's like
being hung on a wall actually no idea about it that's a bummer for an artist right like totally way better if they can be part of that art long term they put so much effort and energy into that art and that creation process so I think we all get that so where we struggle is on the corporate side right of like exactly do does a corporation deserve to get seven percent royalties like does artifact need seven percent royalties in perpetuity going to Nike like I don't know what why do they need that what are they giving to so I think that's where I do think you're right that there will be a I mean we're already seeing it there's a lot of a lot of people that are doing sales off chain for large nft projects and they are honoring the creative
royalty back to the artist just because they value the art and they value the artist so I think that like we'll still we'll still see that I mean the other cultural thing yeah I agree the other thing that comes up for me here is uh just this idea of tokenizing time I find very interesting and it makes me think about uh zenica and the 333 Club where what he did I mean it is it is a lifetime pass and be interesting to ask Seneca what he thinks about if it is zero royalties but that's basically what he did was he said okay I don't know what to do with my time how to manage my time everybody wants access to me you know as he becomes more of a leader in the space there's going to be more people saying hey can you consult can you advise my project so he said
okay I'm just gonna launch 333 club with 3300 T's if you're in 333 club which I'm a member of and then you can just you literally have access to a calendly where you can grab an hour of his time and that's super valuable and so you work more than once or can you only book one now you can book as many times as you want see that's you got to make them burn it right you got to go like oh I have I'm gonna work for five more years doing tattoos right and that means I'm gonna do a thousand more tattoos or ten thousand more tattoos and you sell all ten thousand especially if you've made it as an artist everyone wants this but right now they just pay you an hourly rate they come when they can and you go listen I'm gonna do 10 000 more tattoos
for the rest of my career and so I'm gonna launch 10 000 nfts and I'm gonna see what the market thinks it's worth it's if you're good and you've built a good reputation I bet you that that goes up a lot more than if you're discharged hourly but now they have to burn it every time and so and they have to get it done by you know whatever 2026 or whatever he decides on and then there you go right and now you've kind of gotten rid of that still that lifetime thing but you only have it it's like exclusive for a certain amount of time that's the way I see it working but I don't know yeah that's interesting I mean what comes to mind to me is like you know he's still a young guy right like right does he want to be like I only you know
like what if he's as he will start tattooing again and then all the people who spend a bunch of money because they thought they were getting like second to last tattoo you know what I mean it's like this is where you just it's hard right this space does box you into sort of absolutes that feel scary to have to make at any one point of time because like you know you could be Tom Brady who decides you're gonna retire and then a month later it's like well apparently I'm back you know it's exactly what I thought of when you said that I thought you were really scared Tom Brady can't even like stick to uh to a like a work commitment you know commitment well that that he in their statement he
was like the kids will remain like the center of our universe and I'm like let's be honest kid like Tom like the kids are not the center of your Universe football is the center of your Universe Center of your Universe you would have stayed damn retired and you are addicted to this game and I'm just gonna be able to say it so but you know just for you you're going back to Tom Brady as a quarterback in the NFL is Dallas I bet yeah true going back though I just want to pull on a thread there please I do think that was interesting of okay so one of the challenges that we are identifying is this absolute right like making something absolute forever does bring up
natural like you know even thinking about rolling loud announcing loud punks which I think is next week that you can buy that that's a lifetime pass like is that going to be a lifetime Festival who knows right like fully bullish on it believe in it but okay what if we took the model of time I really I think that time is actually the key things here so rather than limiting it to say in the case of the tattoo artist rather than saying I'm only going to do 10 000 more tattoos what about if you just said okay this is the only way you can get a tattoo from me in the next five years you pick the time like I'm thinking like proof proof Collective proof pass is only a three-year pass garyvee with v friends uh
three-year access right so what about if you use time as the way to to manage it because that so remove the lifetime say that it's unlimited access within this time at least that allows you some control so you don't you don't have to deal with this like forever who knows what happens yeah yeah I definitely am a fan of of time-bounding things everything is going to breed complications right like there's no just like Silver Bullet that's perfect for in every way Etc right but like I I'm very much with you in setting time expectations on things because I do think without them
you have no exit ramp and that's completely unfair to put on human beings right like you just cannot expect people um to just owe you something in perpetuity like that's um it's not feasible unless you're doing like what a garyvee is doing which is he knows and I you know I think he's like a very very very rare kind of exception where he's 40 years into an incredibly successful business career and he knows that his like ultimate passion in life is to like create a set of characters that leave their mark on the world Allah on Disney and he wants to go and build IP and that's the play he's making like you know I think that's um there's that that sort of a distinction you know um but totally if you are basically fractionalizing tokenizing
yourself which I think is really interesting it's what you're describing with zenica it's certainly what's going on with this tattoo artist right is your your he's creating a way not this is not explicitly his intent but he's creating a way for you to speculate on the future value of his career and his work which is I think really actually very cool I think you hear like you know the cynics and the crypto Skeptics or like it's the financialization of everything that's horrible what a nightmare scenario and I think it's because their minds jump to like look what's happened when we financialized mortgages right we created mortgage back Securities and we danked we tanked the entire economy and I think they're um heads jump there which I don't think is entirely fair I don't think it's entirely unfair but it's clearly not entirely fair and like I don't know when
you'll have Goldman Sachs developing an index for like Puerto Rican tattoo artists or like you know tattoo artists but it's not anytime soon right like like JP Morgan is not buying these speculative instruments you know what I mean and like packaging bundling them up and reselling them to like you know that's not like that doesn't make any sense right so um and again it actually might one day yeah but it doesn't right now you know and so the people who are buying these nfts are not JPMorgan it's people who genuinely love tattoos love ones work whatever I've totally got myself off the original point of this which is something about time oh but like yeah if you're if you're I think the idea of tokenizing yourself is awesome um but I do think it's it's really important then to to put an end window
on it like you're saying because you know unless you're 70 like how can you possibly say you know what you're going to want to do for the rest of your life right you know so if there's any 70 or 70 year olds out there that are last year I want to know that person yeah all right I think it's time we start to wrap up but I think Carly this is a great conversation I think we're gonna have to get you back on again to just shoot the [ __ ] about overpriced because it's a lot anytime um so we're definitely gonna have you back on uh one day soon but Jay why don't we start to uh well I guess first Carly I mean you've already done a couple shows about your YouTube specifically but why don't you give us more we're going to do we're gonna do a
speed round which I think is gonna be a lot of fun but first uh where can people find you uh yeah okay Carly P Riley I think it's on if you're watching this you see the little link um my anyways you can go follow me on Twitter Instagram and various things I don't really do much on Instagram so probably just follow me on Twitter um and then uh please like subscribe to the channel that's like really the ask is overpriced jpegs we I the show is through bankless effect you know essentially but it's we we just recently launched its own separate YouTube channel so we're in the process of trying to grow that up so I would love for you to go subscribe on the YouTube or you know wherever you get your podcast you can find overpriced jpegs you can write and review it all those
things I would really appreciate it such a podcaster I love it podcaster yeah wherever wherever you get your podcasts you know but also a marketer I you're the first person that's ever mid-show been able to throw a CTA in there I'm trying man I don't have that I don't have the bankless blanket anymore you know I don't have like the security blanket of their 180 000 subscribers to uh to soften any like shitty episodes you know where I'm like I wasn't you know like I don't know 8 000 people watching it can't be that bad I don't have that anymore for for an introvert you're a pretty pretty natural natural marketer so thank you I'm impressed okay let's speed round it everybody's favorite time a couple
quick questions coming at you Carly first question what's an nft you'll never sell oh my gosh it makes me want to look at my open seat I mean I don't know I tend to be like every there's a PR everything's got a price you know like there is an amount of money that I would there's many things I think back of like Richard not selling that punk for whatever everybody got that like many million and I'm like do you think he's still proud of that move like we were all so excited for him and like I guess he made the right call and it was part of his brand but like really did he didn't even go like I'm able to sell that [ __ ] um so I don't know I mean I have some cool ones that like are uh unique that I did with
like eponym eponym wait am I pronouncing it right you remember the the one that's um like text to to visuals right you could like write you could like describe what you wanted and it would create the look eponym Heroes oh my God I can't believe I meant this up it's an AI they have an AI software and basically you would Tech you would I could type in like brunette with blue eyes and like pink lips and like you could describe how you wanted it and then it would generate an image via AI this was pre-dolly it was like kind of it predated some of the at this gotten more popular and so I generated some through that which was really fun and you know I made some you could like you know reload them until you got one that you wanted and then you got to name
it so like that one feels kind of personal I named it like from you know but I think I used the stripper name Cheney middlemay which is like anyways so I like stripper named her but anyways but she's like sweet and you know I feel like I probably would be less inclined to sell her um I I definitely have like a lot like my me bit I feel my miba is my only um entry point to the Yuga Universe which um doesn't bias me to Yuga at all like sometimes people are like you didn't disclose you have a meme I was like I was writing about apes like it just didn't even occur to me like it's not affecting the way I'm it's not clouding my judgment towards Yuga but like I definitely want to hold on to that for for a while because I I do appreciate
having sort of an entry point into their universe but I would there's definitely a price at which I would sell my eBay I don't know what it is but like it's not I'm not clutching it like it's my mother on her deathbed or something so um yeah okay sorry long-winded answer for the speed round well no it looks great love it love it okay any upcoming projects you're excited about foreign there's a project called our planet that just I mean it just minted um it minted out actually um and I interviewed the founders woman Gita senka panavar and Ashley Vickers came on the podcast uh recently it was this week that it minted out they're incredible like just you know exciting because they're like very serious
business women who have an incredibly you know decades-long track record succeeding and like taking businesses public and like just um super serious people actually Canadian oh she's not Canadian but she lives in Canada Gita has won Gita has won um like Canada's like woman of the year like four times like they're like something like crazy just like the best woman in Canada is like essentially the award and she's won it like four years in a row which is crazy um yeah and she you know she just super super badass and they are their passion is really kind of how do we take off chain assets that are super expensive and only accessible to or available to high net worth individuals through you know your JP Morgan to the world
um bring them on chain tokenize them I mean they do become security to that point right but tokenize them um in a fractionalized tokenize distribute and make them accessible so that you can actually have more people participating in like off-chain Financial assets that are lucrative but only um only available to like the very rich and you know feeling like smart contracts take down that overhead cost of those kinds of sales in a way that make it feasible in a way that hasn't previously been feasible if you're going through a JP Morgan so um I just I think they're doing some really cool stuff so that that would be a project that I'm excited about that's just launched can you give an example like would be an example like yeah I can give you a business like a very specific example she is super into green energy
stuff so she she launched a she is an investment fund that's invested in a bunch of things including they own I might be getting some of the specifics a little bit off here but effectively it is a it's a plant uh not a not a leaf plant like a factory plant that turns cow manure into energy um you know there's like a tremendous amount of like carbon that gets emitted through like cow [ __ ] and they're repurposing that into like arguably the cleanest energy that's out there because it's actually carbon negative because it's also preventing the carbon from growing the atmosphere and it's profitable and you know it makes really good returns and it's millions of dollars to own and something like that would be something she'd be looking to
allow for co-ownership in by you know 10 000 people as opposed to like the 10 people who all put up 10 million or whatever it was yeah um so I just gotta say it's really funny that you said that the cleanest energy is going to end up coming from cow [ __ ] I know I think we joked about that on the Pod you know but like literally you know again because again it's not it's not just clean it's like also it's preventing like an actively negative environmental event I get it um it's just funny so so that would be an example of something again you you talk you're like fully in the heart of Securities territory now um but if there's anybody I want kind of working on this problem that they've got apparently a really amazing compliance
officer who's you know been dealing with these kind of with you know Securities questions for decades and they're trying to work it through so super cool love it yeah okay last question if you had a billboard that one billion people were going to see what would you write on it watch overpriced jpegs um no I'm just kidding I don't know um he called me a good marketer earlier so I was like I've got to lead into it that is a very hard question a billion people one billion your your face on a it doesn't have to have your face on it but oh that's yeah that would be wild um honestly like where where my head goes which is not like a
web three thing specifically I don't know what it would say I you know I do think we are so in our own Echo Chambers and this you know this ties to nfts in the sense that like what nfts are enabling is like you know as we increasingly have our like micro communities you know nfts are ways to kind of bond and form even tighter versions of the micro communities we're already forming uh but I do think it's like deeply dangerous and it is like so ironic to me how does people across all sorts of different ideological spectrums just like the lack of empathy for people on the other you know like ideological spectrums I just find um like alarming so if I had like an audience of a billion people I feel like I don't think there's anything you can say on a billboard that's going to solve
this but that is kind of a message that I want to get out there it's just like kind of empathy for everyone like I think you know um I don't know I just have a lot of empathy for everyone this gets into a whole lot a whole like question around free will though like I don't really believe in Free Will and so I think like you can't really blame or fall you know whatever that's along a deeper hole that's really where my head first goes that's another Rabbit Hole you know get the nft rabbit hole and then we've got the like this Carly believe in Free Will Rabbit Hole um I that's where my head initially goes so like that's like I want a billion people to like Embrace but then otherwise it would be just like you know watch overpriced jpegs or something but it should be subscribed
subscribe subscribe that's not good with like a with a quick little bitly you know something that's really easy to like remember you know on your drive home so you can actually go home and do it what's funny is our social team was actually creating Billboards and putting face on it of the person on our on our podcast and then like sometimes they would tweet it out sometimes they didn't really do it but they just decided yes they're not gonna do that anymore and they canceled it but thank God because what the heck would they put on the billboard yeah well you could put a QR code yeah yeah about a billion people I do a QR code so that I can get people I mean that that is the answer regardless of what the message ends up being if I'm like trying to preach my like weird hippie empathy
[ __ ] or if I'm like just telling them to describe to overpriced jpegs for sure putting a QR code on there so you could actually like you know have people scan it have them do something more you know see a longer message yeah give them an nft get their pick so get their wallet address get their emails yeah get all their private information 100 start to communicate with them monetize yourself exactly you get their email address really start building out the social profile understand where they're spending their money so I can better Target them with my ads 100 all the things laughs all right that's that's a wrap wow Carly this has been just a pleasure thanks so much for
coming on the show thanks for sharing everything uh yeah so so great definitely like Kai said we're gonna do do another do another one in the future amazing well thank you both so much for having me I know we may be working together in some capacity in our in our I don't know businesses and lives so I I look forward to that and uh yeah I just really appreciate you let me come on sweet thanks so much for listening everybody have a great week and we'll see you next time and don't forget to watch the documentary because we need 10 000 people right at least 10 000 people ten thousand dollars maybe that's how it's working we're gonna do some good and have some fun in the process hopefully thank you for listening to web3 Academy we hope
this helps you along your web 3 journey and if it does please share this episode And subscribe so you don't miss the next one nothing in this podcast was Financial advice crypto and web 3 can be risky you can literally lose it all in fact if you invest on account of what we say you probably will lose it all so don't do that in all honesty the point of this podcast is to remove the noise of markets and price and focus on utility and implementation anyway so you should not take any of this as Financial advice thank you friends and see you in the next one
