Chiali Tsai, who leads a small product team within the Ethereum Foundation's Privacy and Scaling Explorations group, presents design-driven innovation, an approach that seeks radical change in what a product means by listening to designers, social scientists and people from other industries. The talk applies it to a collaboration on a retroactive funding platform for local journalists in India, where brainstorming workshops explored how transparent funding and community voting could build trust in reporting.

there's not many people I like that much easier for me to handle um hi everyone I'm charie today we're going to talk about design driven Innovation uh first all any designer here or consider yourself all right cool um so a bit background about myself so I'm working in the privacy and scaling exploration I leading a small team called Poland lab uh we consider ourself as a product Studio as a incubator however we want to call uh the goal is to bring the PSC technology the technology to and user application and we collaborate with other EF team um so today's talk it's very much inspired

by this book thank you uh so this year I was really trying to find a way to work with the zig engineer uh because often time we talk about designing for future building for future and and as um a product designer for a decade I feel I should kind of f figure out a new way to collaborate with ZK engineer so I discovered this book called design driven Innovation and um the goal is here changing the rule of the competition by radically innovating what things Mak so Innovation start by listening uh often how we listen by uh what customer want or need and what markets missing

also look at the trend and observe the uh weak signal so design driven Innovation is no difference um it's by listening but instead of listen current customer current market you listen uh a group of a diverse group of people it can be a designer it can be social scientist or culture I don't know cultural innovator uh or people just work in different industry like you so what is the design dream Innovation uh as you can see this chart in the YX is about technology and the xais is the meaning so most of a kind of company or team they are doing marketable um they kind of observe

what's missing out there and they do a very incremental change uh so the technology is not like hugely different uh can be slowly uh different and the meaning is also kind of stay in the same Zone then there's another approach called uh technology push they might be doing that very advanced technology but they have hard time to find uh what this technology mean at the beginning for example um like very long time ago about GPS GPS was used by the military and uh it didn't have like obvious reason for GPS at the beginning but once the consumer uh Market adapt what's meaning

and they become very uh widely spread so the design driven is for in this Zone uh basically it's you can combine the technology and what it meaning the radical change or you can just build a product that it's the technology is not much different but you have a way to convey the uh meaning and the product service you are designing for the user you target to uh but what do you mean by in the meaning so in this example I'm showing in 2006 uh while Xbox and Playstation they are very focused on the technology uh Improvement to kind of help the game

console uh be high performance or Slimmer design but Nintendo we did take another approach by introduce this uh motion sensor and they also really radically change the way people playing with a game you are no longer just sitting on your s far playing game with your family or friend you are doing things physically and even more fun I remember my brother was visiting us from Taiwan to Canada and he was ready to wait in L to kind get this machine so that's the meaning what we are talking about here so sooner we talk about Innovation need to listen to a group of uh diverse people so in here uh you can start a conversation uh as I just

mentioned um with media with artists or cultural organization or even just engineer that work um similar to you but they work in different industry to get this diverse and 360 uh immerse and um the conversation you can go um more rich and you will kind of discover what you're trying to convey the meaning for your new product and new service uh compared to human Center design and design dment Innovation human Center is design it's mostly you uh listen closely the user you are serving for the current context how they use and design dment Innovation is about triangle so you listen to them or you

propose a solution for land and why you listen with uh the the network you are building from the diverse group of people so I guess all right just temperature check is very abstract for now I guess so yeah all right cool so that's why I'm saying so how do we apply in this case so uh I would like to talk about this collaboration we start uh last month uh we met this uh fellow uh he's from next bilan Fellowship currently so he is a Indian and also a journalist and he has this project called Bo de his mission is to uh help the uh local journalist to get racial

active funding and what we find is very intriguing is okay now we definitely see a lot of Journalism uh trust issue so we see this opportunity maybe we can kind of help to toward to build a trust uh by giving the retroactive funding uh instead of giving the funding right away because often time uh as you guys know those journalist they might get fund by uh like Big Brand like CN or whatever they might get funding from the government and therefore they have this bias viewing and we thought this platform may be a kind of opportunity for us to kind of try to shift that direction as well so yeah so we start by talking with um a lot different people

we host uh two brainstorming Workshop uh there was uh 19 people participate I think what it make it very rich because we had five um local journalists uh from India they were participating the uh session so it made the uh the brain session very very rich and we had a designer from different field and also marketer to kind of participate multiple um uh idea but what do we talk about in the brainstorming uh so again it's it is a virtual artive funing so we start from a very low level uh so how can we align the concept of rro active funding with India's culture and the society Nuance so this was the moment the the Indian

journalist was telling us that that one of a journalist was saying his grandma was really um willing to give a small uh incentive weekly to their to issue she care locally and then next topic we talk about user engagement so here we were see seeing um propose a question what kind uh what mechanism can Blaster the trust between platform and journalist and the user so this was what we kind of mentioned sooner that the trust between the journalism now it's getting big pretty big challenging so we don't need my kind of nice to add into this br storming session then the last one we go

like go thinking big go dream big uh about future so we were saying uh how do you envision this platform influence the J funding globally so this get very interesting because you start seeing we might be able to kind of really change how the journalist Uh current business model so yeah we get very very well here uh so we start being say all this springstone we start our interpretation uh so yeah it is a radio active funding uh as a base but then we realize it's a collective impact we are doing uh because it's very local and it's contain uh the journalist and the person who got

benefit so it is a collective impact and uh so we kind of to us okay we we need to build a product more has this Collective impact uh uh driven and again it's a local uh first because because the Indian culture apparently is very uh commune Centric and we definitely want to add that flavor uh into the platform and uh uh the five journalist was telling us the best way of communicate the idea or concept or server is by water m in India so that's kind of what we kind of um interpret uh so after this interpretation we start building kind of website as um kind of prototyping just to set out the mission out there so if

you guys want to check it's uh voe.org uh you can visit this website and it's it is found so the statement is here that you found individual action to collect the impact uh here we also kind of propose some uh app screenshot uh it's early concept just the idea is kind of okay we set the mission set the idea out there and let receive some feedback and here we also identify opportunity for PSC using uh zon notled proof protocol called Ana Adar uh because it's very local based and we don't want to people just give opinion without knowing what they're saying so uh the an how it works you basically you need to prove

that you are Indian citizen by uploading you have this Adar uh PDF and then we'll create a signature uh once they verify themselves they will be able to participate some voting uh to kind of tell everyone in the platform okay yeah in my uh in my Village this issue actually is true uh therefore it can kind of create that trust for other people to find the uh uh report and again it's very about transparency uh about the uh transaction how the money flow from one side to the other and once the report get funding uh maybe the previous report they were working with very tight budget and once they got funded they might be able to

increase their budget and produce even more higher quality of a a report or even spend uh money to kind of trace the government official to uh resolve the issue it can the issue can be uh electricity or clean water or whatever you can imagine in the local Indian uh Village uh so now what so as I just mentioned um we found ideation to the website launch we only spend about one week and we launched that website last week or so just before de connect I think and we start getting a lot of feedback and yeah so we while we capture other feedback we want to stay strong

about what the mission we are building and we don't want like okay because somebody said that we should change that way we we definitely want to stay strong on our mission here and then we're going to get to the build time very soon and we are hoping to launch this um first version in February next uh year it's a very short build time to be honest but yeah we will I hope we will make it uh so if you want to learn more or collaborate with Su La you can scan this QR code to go our Discord or you want to learn about psse technology uh you can go to our website and I will leave a question or challenge for you guys what meaning you can

introduce on the product or service you are building today that's it thank you very much
