"Artistic Speculations and Ecofeminist Futures"

EthPrague 2024 · 1 Jun 2024 · 24:42

Visual artist Laura Fong Prosper presents her work on ecology, feminism and futurism, concluding that art can help people imagine a better world. A virtual reality piece revives socialist utopias from a collection of Eastern Bloc films, and a film interprets the speech of a Honduran river defender who was assassinated. A later installation feeds archive images about extractivism into an AI and turns the results into sculptures and carpets made from ash, bioplastics and recycled materials. She adds that making digital art tangible has helped her mental wellbeing.

[Música] Thank you for Being here I also want to thank camilla tran I know She Had a baby but When She Found me online She invited Me And super grateful to be here Because of her and I'm Laura prosper I am I am visual artist based in berlin Where I come from Panama origin so this Talk will basically be a presentation of some of my works related to um ecology feminisms and futurism let's call it

This Way so My First work is a collaboration with two other fellow artists Team vilke and matias bruni and basically we delve into a Collection of 200 60 mim films from the socialist Times from the East block there are films from czechoslovakia there are films from East Germany from the soviet Union etc and um the idea was to Rescue some of these socialist utopias to bring them in a more contemporary contex also we Wanted to play with different formats

Because we're Talking About 60 mim film but We digitized the films That put them in a virtual reality so It was kind of a Play within formats and Time um going I show you an next an extract I don't have the the Piece Because you need Uh vr glasses but we made a little edit of What Was um the exhibition we made for berlin Art week with work First video please You are entering the collective Memory from a society Rather different to the one you W

trapped in until Now this society has not been realized yet and exists only in the fragile Memory of past Generations from from there It must Be remembered and repeated constantly in order to be evoked from the dead and Blind spots Of History we cast a Shadow on Our ancestors as the sun of progress In which We are no longer willing to

believe glows on Our backs but the promise as it stays unfulfilled as the future has Never become present nor has it remained Future Time that connects Generations a spiraling movement as we Walk through Life In A dialogical unfolding alongside Future and past relatives here in this ritual space of collective reconstruction of the past the Memorial

Machine is running nonstop executing the reconstruction of the ancestral in order to gain Power Over The present as we might already inhabit What Our ancestors would have understood as a dystopian Future This is the eco chamber of another World and for One to be able to Listen to it One must be willing to depart from this World to Let It crumble and to move Beyond into that World Where many Worlds fit bringing the future into

existence [Música] [Música] [Música] [Música] Okay then my next work is called

okay So this next work is I made a installation a Mother of two kids and I Sorry sometimes like to well It's not That I like I have to bring them to my work Because they're around They don't go so I have to bring them to my work so this work we made an installation a clos Circuit installation we went to the forest and pick up some mushrooms and then we made a Close Circuit installation with a microscope um like that And then I connected um an analog video synthesizer so they could Play around with the

image so there you see like Kids playing with the synthesizer and placing mushrooms in a microscope that was really fun for them and these are some of the images that we took so my next work um Maybe You Can Play the the last video And I talk Because he Silent And I can Talk on top of it so Ah It's already there so for this work Uh It's also the same material that you Saw on the vr installation What we Wanted to Focus on themes of

extractivism and um minery and so on that What that was happening Back then and Still happening and basically we took um these images and we fit an Ai and created um we Wanted to Uh make the digital Art tangible So The idea was to do um sculptures out of the images created with the Ai and the archives we use um um polymers bioplastics made from potato and also we use agarar and other materials with did

screen prints and we did um Uh carpet so That's basically the That's basically the the images that we that were also projected with a with an analog 60 millim projector in the That was Made In The Academy K in berlin so we made an installation You're going to see pictures later of the of the analog projector projection and also the digital speculations Uh made physical of of these archives Maybe you can already um they can Take out the so yeah um so

This is what we created we made 3D printers sculptures made of Ash Uh we made carpets made of Recycle js Uh from Recycle cotton and Recycle Plastic bottles so that was also kind of relevant to Connect Uh with the whole concept and then we made the scen prints Uh that were encapsulated in bioplastics This Is Like How the installation looked there you see the projection of that film that you just Saw This Is another View of the installation from and then you see the

film you see the bioplastics carpets and Ash sculptures so then um I Wanted to experiment more with the Being a video artist and digital Art for decades I kind of liked like I went The opposite Way instead of Just going more digital I Wanted to bring like Uh I was exploring that to make this digital Art tangible that was like the main Reason Why I went into doing this Uh kind of um physical work so basically with the same Uh materials that we use

on the other project i i started doing these um tapestries Uh the interesting thing is that these images are created by Ai but then I bring them to the physical world Uh with a tofting Machine I also do felting and Punch needle there are different techniques and also different materials um also let's say the next One This is a working progress But I'm also incorporated Uh leftover Fabrics so basically Everything that you see is recycled made from Plastic bottles and um leftover Fabrics from Friends that

make clothes um and All the yarns also like I I source like I try to find the source some are from Recycle cotton some are from Recycle Plastic etc and also um for me This is also in this digital World that We have so much information you open the Instagram to see horror basically I needed to get away from that and for me This Is also Like an exploration of mental mental Health wellbeing I was diagnosed by with adhd Just Last year and 45 years old I've been living with this For My whole Life

happily now I can name what I have but this has been very therapeutic for me and where I Wanted to share it with you this is my current This is what i'm doing at the moment And My conclusions is that I think um yeah Art can be a catalyst Uh to Imagine a better World to create the utopia That We all want and also we need to Tagle like Uh for me It's important to Tagle social issues sustainability in my work Because I feel That's like as an artist That's what I'm interesting in in

sharing and and working And also I like to collaborate with other artists scientists I think um let's do let's build a Community Thank you if you like my work you want to follow me my handle for Every social media although I'm as I said I am a bit away from that at the moment you can also write me an email on myb [Aplausos] Thank you very much la for a wonderful insight to your work and and and tapping into such important and crucial issues Any questions for Laura about Our artwork or so OK So I think laur's going to be

around so if you have questions you can Catch her can Just write me also thank Thank you Laura and Stay with us for The Final spech of the day day in about 5 minutes thank you [Música]
