5,600,000 POAP NFTS MINTED
21 Sept 2022 · 21:37
The Interop's Sebastien Couture talks with Patricio Worthalter, co-founder of POAP, about the project crossing 5.6 million minted proof-of-attendance NFTs. They discuss POAP's origins, its use as an on-chain attestation service, privacy trade-offs in a selectively private credential, and the roadmap for bringing POAP to other blockchains.

[Music] i'm here at dabcon in berlin and i met with patricio who many people in the ecosystem will know as one of the founders co-founder of poap and definitely its most recognizable uh advocate thanks for uh thanks for doing this of course but you know what we have many of advocates every pop collector it's a nation of promotion for us yeah yeah i mean everybody who collects poe apps and certainly everybody who has their own poe app is like spreading the the poep family and like growing the
family and we are making such a favor for most people here because most people here are super passionate about everything well 3 crypto city on bitcoin you name it but they don't have many options for cool stuff they can do with all this technology so this this thing got sent for the crypto communities because now they can do something and this is why the relations of promotion um they are all advocating and viralizing our technology so it's pretty fun yeah so you guys have uh you guys stand here and actually one of the things that i did this week which was really cool is that i got my own pop card and i created i mean i've been collecting poe apps for a couple years but just you know not very uh consistently like i'll get to my
conferences and stuff but this time i got my card and i've got my po app on the card so when i meet people first thing i do is like hey do you want my paper card right that's the card it's a cool it's a cool thing like and um so how are people what are some interesting ways that people are using this but you know i don't blame you for not being more consistent on your collecting before the cards everything was so clunky for collecting power-ups like maybe you didn't have your wallet or you didn't have an ens and and i don't blame anyone only now that we have this card is getting less painful and still there's so much work to be done on ux yeah so this card when we say the card it's just a little credit card size piece of
plastic that has an nfc chip inside nfc being this near field communication standard yeah and that's not a product of poet um it's somebody company called iyk like if you know and what they were doing before meeting us was putting these chips on um expensive apparel or pieces of clothing or accessories and we were like we could adapt this technology for it to deliver a pow-up and now it's mostly uh they are almost fully focused in pop delivery that's cool it has vitalized our tech because now at the comfort of your fingertips you set up your pow-up every person you met get this proof that they met you and
it's like a business card but it leaves a crumble and that little trace that it lives live forever in the blockchain and you can communicate with the people you meet you can give them a precious collectible because it's not just any digital item it's not just that they get a shape they get a full-blown blockchain native asset that's gonna live with them forever and it creates a story it's a whole new experience maybe i'm sorry i wasn't um i wasn't prepared to pitch the iyk model so it wasn't very well structured but it is really disruptive on the digital asset collecting experience and people are loving it yeah like my my interaction with poep has mostly been
you know at crypto conferences of course i think a lot of people here and a lot of people who collect co-apps that we know uh are you know are getting apps at like sponsor stands and things like that um you were telling me about some other really interesting use cases like people distributing poeps at their wedding for instance which is like a really cool idea so like what are the ways that people are using poeps outside of like the crypto bubble in which we're in yeah technically speaking pow-ups is another station standard it is a system that makes really easy for anyone on the ground technical or not to create a verifiable proof that something has happened and and this concept is completely new for humanity because before blockchains humanity didn't have
the ability to have an authentic indisputably authentic genuine a piece of data with perfect provenance you can know at all times where it was what it was what was wrong with it that's gonna live forever so we do weddings we do all kinds of ceremonies but ultimately we believe that humanity let's say in 10 20 maybe longer depending on how long it takes to adopt will have nft like assets for all their digital property and very likely for all the real world property every picture you take is going to be an nft um your car your house might not be
native energy but they will have an nfc attached to the deed so these things we are doing like weddings and memberships to things and graduation and i've been to this class to this club they are mostly poster cases for proving what this thing is useful we expect this to blow up and seeing pow up and pull up like digital assets being used on your everyday life almost all the time you do something through a screen which is in column in the future almost all the time you're awake yeah i you know one of the things that i hadn't really occurred to me is that pull up is an anticipation service like of course of course it's not cessation service and it makes sense that you guys
describe it that way but it's it's an attestation service that has a very specific sort of scope right it's a nice cessation that something happened and that thing is usually um someone being somewhere or meeting someone or you know broadening out rather than that we were talking about like the podcast use use case you could have a po-app that um kind of proves that you listen to a podcast because uh you um collected a poep during like the drop period of that podcast but on chain attestations it goes quite um like there are many other data points that you could use as an attestation you could have um the fact that someone voted on a governance proposal uh the
fact that someone staked their tokens i think like this also is part of the types of attestations that for instance daos might want to collect in order to reward certain users for doing certain behavior does poep go beyond like these the use cases that we're familiar with in terms of co-op does it go to these other more say data-driven attestations or will it always remain in this nice kind of real life or you know i'm very glad that you asked very glad that you noticed that there are some constraints these constraints were established by design we could have been more open we could have been permissionless and let people do whatever but it was a conscious design decision
to be only doing this ephemeral things associated to something you've done because pop it is another station protocol but it objective it's subjective it's not being an adaptation protocol when i decided to invent this thing the drive didn't come for just either wanting to make money or leading a big application or something else what drove me to run power is that since forever like since i was a toddler or a teenager i wanted to have a digital system for keeping a chronological uh recollection of things that i've done in my life that i cared for when i was younger like when
i was really young i come from somewhat humble family and most of my hobbies were about things that i could do with no money so i used to take training to places i didn't even pay for the first and and i wished i had a checking for every station i visited many of the stations i have visited no longer exist and when i learned about blockchains i was like this is a dream come true this is what i always wanted so when we built pow-up we build it according what i want pop-up to be and i want to have to be this ecosystem for the preservation of memories i don't want it to be for certifying diplomas for things that those care about we do plenty of those things either because
they are marketing gimmicks that are useful or because they help with adoption and and it's useful for growth but in the longer term we will be narrowing more and more what what you can use for up for and ultimately and this is already happening it's not a hypothetical for a long term the curation body bob has a set of designated individuals that check and enforce compliance with the policy the curation body is told that all powerapps have to be meaningful to the collectors that get it and they have to be something that they will recall it for a very long time it's not forever and is taking assets on a protocol it's not a good candidate for something
for which you really want to have a precious collectible that's going to exist forever and it's not just environmental concerns and and that kind of things that make us want to narrow down the scope it's also that people can only remember so much there's there's fatigue so if you get a pow-up for every time you go to a supermarket or every time you stick on a protocol eventually you will have a very long logbook of things that nobody cares about yeah so what we want is people check their collections and get an immediate dopamine hit because they remember something that was good for them yeah to follow up on that point also i mean
if you have a poet for every time you went to the supermarket you also have like a data trail that you know could eventually be valuable to someone and well you're opening a can of worms because pogba is a privacy nightmare even if you only have the good ones you are saying a lot yeah and that can become a hazard for your safety and such we can't wait for the top computer scientists that are working in privacy procedural solutions to finally do something that we can use but you know it's so frustrating i have talked to almost every sikh engineer that exists and i never felt that we are anywhere near for from having a good toolkit that we can use for selective privacy at the scale yeah
because i think you know with poeps i i might be perfectly fine with you know having all of my say participating in cryptoconferences being fairly public one may have certain privacy concerns about activities that they're engaged in or communities in which they uh participate or podcasts they listen to for instance if that thing were to give out a co-app where they might want to have like granular privacy settings around those things or like not even have it be uh transparent at all it could be like hey i just want to have a trail of these things and yeah certainly i mean this is really painful for me um it extends to crypto i mean like broadly like you know the entire
history of your transactions are online yeah we need to do much better i am optimistic we will have selective privacy eventually yeah it is happening the tornado cash thing it's a massive setback but technology is unstoppable yeah so like what's on the roadmap for poep i i heard you guys are going to be maybe updating the app and awesome yeah the runbook is extremely exciting because bob is a hundred people team so there are many things going on in our people considering affiliate like the pop-up inc team maybe 65 but then there are several affiliate entities and partners and like teams that are working full-time in pow-up although they don't belong to our mothership we consider part of our team so there are many
things going on um product needs lots of tlc the tenderloin care because it has plenty of rough edges it's not a priority because as clunky as it is it does what it's expected to be yeah um so i wouldn't want to set much expectations in product updates there are many half of our staff is working on improving the product but the more exciting things are the mainstream partnerships we have a global scale partnership with warner music group warner music represents and markets and coordinate the concerts of the biggest
bands like coldplay red hot chili peppers many others some of them are using power ready others will use it in the future several movie theater chains movie production companies will be meeting pop for people that see their movies many top schools and community college and education entities of all sorts of the the cup the con the concurring the mainstream for me it's one of the most exciting things so for once crypto is not just a nerd's thing and it's something that does useful stuff for everyone so so that's what really excites me it's not happening anytime soon but we want to make progress in governance because governance it's maybe the top
challenge we have how do we remain credibly neutral and how do we make sure that everyone can use pow-up on fairgrounds ideally for free or at a very low cost while being sustainable and high integrity and sensory resistant and for that it's only become known at a point we had the idea of coming up with some sort of dao with or without the token but we haven't seen any doubt that really works so now we don't want to see a paradise this really nicely growing thing by adding a super structure on top so so governance is something
that's a massive tingling item on the roadmap um it is unclear where it's gonna fall but we we present and we promise um a thoughtful conscious approach so whatever we do is going to be done following the desire of the collectors although bob has venture capitalists that have supported us on the earlier days they don't run the company and we won't ever do something that is not on the best interest of the collectors in our ideal model we could find a way for making revenue for sustaining operations but that is it
it's not obstructed obstrusive to being a normal collector on the ground which would be something similar like the discord nitro system in discord you can happily chat as much as you want run a server use emojis upload files without paying anyone anything now if you're a hardcore user and you use this card a lot maybe you want to buy nitro yeah and you have a slightly better experience ideally it would be the same with pop-up so you can be a happy collector no matter how much money you have the running costs are paid by the hardcore users okay yeah that's cool um i i had no idea that pop was like such a huge organization uh yeah it's very very interesting and if you only knew because
we don't have superfluous people everyone who's working at power it's doing something that is relevant and it's important and when the results of that comes out it's gonna be exciting so so you better stay tuned to what we are doing of course your work as a journalist or whatever you call yourself it's to know a little of everything and if you wanted to be deep into the pop rabbit hole that's a full time shot i don't get to know are there any podcasts out there there are a couple community run podcasts and they discuss weekly all the things that are going on because between the forum the discord the many props running all over it is like ethereum or cosmos or any ecosystem you need to be selective
and it's only going to get bigger uh so yeah yeah i mean this is one thing that that i wanted to ask you maybe we're running a bit long here but what are the prospects uh because i always try to look at things from you know a multi-ecosystem perspective and what are the prospects of having you know po the brand and the po infrastructure and and working across ecosystems say like for instance the cosmos ecosystem or solana or outside of the uvm ecosystem yeah we have a clear stance on this this is this is not a challenging topic or anything although bob has been born at the core of the stream community and we have been following the quarry syrian missiles in chanel and how we do
things and such fundamentally we are chain agnostic as long as the network in which we meet offers what appears to be a reliable outlook for this proof to exist for a long period of time that's enough for us right now our standard only works on evm networks because we use crc 721 tokens we have explored all the most other popular ecosystems including solana tesos tendermint light networks and such we haven't seen a strong evidence that people really want to have follow-up in other
blockchains yeah so we have an identity priority and the kryptonite they are those that are reasonable yeah they kind of understand that the ibm has massive network effects so every day we don't mean somewhere else we don't fragment the space and fragmentation sucks big time so fundamentally we are checking agnostic but we are pragmatic and right now the networks in which it made sense for us to be where evm networks and what is atm network is mostly mainnet and gnosis chain and we are at dubcon which is like the annual convention for not this change but this not only it's not set into a stone as soon
as we see real reasons for deploying somewhere else it's very likely that we deploy somewhere else and it doesn't have to be us everything we build this open source whoever like spoke to be another chain can fork power and if they achieve meaningful traction we would invite them to merge our ecosystem because we we we play cooperative we don't want to beat the monopoly we want to build an ecosystem so whoever is feeling that there are good reasons for pow-up to exist in cosmos in solar in any other network come talk to us let us see that you are competent let us give you the feedback on how we believe
you should build this for us to eventually absorb or integrate your efforts and we would love to in the long run do that i have to send this to the stargaze folks over in the cosmos ecosystem i reserve my opinion because there has been lots of false assumptions on how nfts should be in a multichain ecosystem and i am of the opinion that an nft is only authentic um if it's minted by a smart contract or if you don't call it a smart contract as to whatever that has provenance tied to the origin story and there are some other building breaches for nfts on which the provenance breaks and i am
like that's not gonna be a thing this is not just like money or currency that you can move across networks and it doesn't matter in nfc it's all about provenance yes and i think those examples that you mentioned are on a different company which they don't appreciate the provenance so if you want to build a pub-like system that you want us to eventually integrate it has to be completely respectful to what has come before you can pretend to flip the table and say my standard is going to be better and you have to adapt we want a lot and we are the undisputed category leader so good luck thanks thanks so much patricia it's really my pleasure
and looking forward to get power-ups listening to your shows yeah well hopefully we can make that happen not too long i would love i would love to make that happen when someone listens to either you know the interop or epicenter that they can mint a co-app you know to prove that they've participated in the live stream or to prove that they've listened to the podcast like on the first couple of days and i think there's like really an opportunity here to solidify um you know solidify the community around like something a bit more tangible than like twitter followers or and that's only going to be the beginning of all the other things that you will be able to build one that's a thing yeah thank you very much
