2024: The Year of DVT with SSV Network
4 Jan 2024 · 9:28
The Rollup hosts Andy and Robbie Klages break down Distributed Validator Technology and how SSV Network applies it to Ethereum staking. They explain how DVT splits a validator's signing key across multiple node operators to reduce single points of failure, and how SSV's permissionless network lets operators run validators and earn rewards without controlling a full 32 ETH stake. The conversation frames DVT as key infrastructure for more resilient, decentralized staking.

welcome back to the rollup High Roller Community as always nothing on the rollup is to be ConEd as Financial advice we are just an Educators in the defi space toss us a quick like give us a share a repost send it to a friend who may want to watch this and finally give us a sub or a follow it means the world to help support credibly neutral educational content in def5 we're here to educate Empower and enrich you and let's jump in what's going on guys welcome to the staking Summit day two put on by staking rewards.com here today with my boy Rob from SSV we're going to talk to you guys about DVT so uh get ready to get DVT peed all right so so Rob you guys are building SSV inside of
this ethereum staking infrastructure layer um we're going to dive into that let's let's give our our audience a a primer on DVT why it's important for ethereum security and decentralization and kind of what that shift from previous staking looks like compared to post DVT staking world all right all right cool question uh so basically the idea of DVT Is So currently let's put it like this currently you have a standard validator you have your consensus client execution client and the node or the validator client uh what this essentially means is that you have your key online all the time to actually like validate transactions taste and like produce blocks and all of that stuff the thing is like uh from a security point
of view your key is online all the time which is like obviously not a good thing uh and then from a single poter failure perspective it's also not a good thing so where you have an issue for example you have a bug in the client or your hard RS goes down your validator also goes down so basically where DVT comes in is to we take the key or the principle is you take the key you split it into multiple key shares these key Shares are assigned to various node operators ideally node operators have different consensus clients locations all of these things to distribute it as good as well as possible um so like pre DVT you have single points of failure centralization issues and um a host of
other things like post DVT you have a more distributed Network you have client diversity you have less single points of failure and um at the end of the day um that's what you want yeah yeah so a post DVT world looks like a more robust ethereum a more decentralized ethereum and also there's this been this buzz word throwing around about democratizing ethereum inter so so does does DBT allow people with less eth to come in how does this open up the playing field for more players to STI so it really depends on the implementation so different very like different implementations can do
different things so I mean there are like other DBT competitors in the world right now but basically uh some companies are using DVT to to lower the bond requirements um I know I can mention a few like Stater and Clay stack some of our partners um and even meta pool like they are able to use the tech to kind of distribute the key but they also kind of use it to lower the bond requirements um like why doing that so less e needed to stake yeah than the 32 or the 16 or for sure yeah and so that opens up the pl the doors for for Mom and Pop for for Grandma Grandpa for your for your next door neighborhood 100% yeah um the thing is like the way it
works is um nuanced like people doing it different ways that's a nice thing about DVT or like SSV like people use SSV to build different steaky applications and they have this whole process like depending on how they do it like but yeah essentially you can do that um by having um multiple NES and by also um basically creating it like yeah so so there are there's different different formations and and different types of ways which you can kind of get to this point to lower that that bonding requirement now when when it comes to to how this this kind of works uh you know you mentioned that there's different Keys being effectively separated uh into
different you know uh let's just call them home stakers or Solo stakers or lsds or validators and these can be different from their Hardware or software that can be in different geographical locations and all these are a means to decentralize right yeah so so where does SSV come in to to play the part in ensuring a DVT focused future for ethereal right so I think the SSV implementation is a bit different than others so what we have done is build a infrastructure solution so the idea is that there is a network and in this network there exist node operators um you know we have like a verified set of operators but the idea is to be completely permissionless uh so by the end of the year when the launch has like we're busy launching there's phased approach but by
the end of the year we want to be completely permissionless which means that anyone can become a node operator on the network um anyone can take their key bring it to SSV Network and distribute it between the nerde operators in the network so essentially um it's very much Performance Based and Trust based uh trustless not trust based the exact opposite um so if you're at home Staker uh and you're writing a nde you can join the network if you have really good performance uh you know people can select you because everything is on the Explorer uh we have a verified operator program so if you want to like kind of have like a reputation boost you can join and you'll be evaluated by the da as a committee and essentially if you
become a verified operator you are like more visible in the network but essentially anyone can become a node operator and get paid in SSV to like run the no to run the validators um that are brought into the network very good and you seem to be pretty technically sound I'm not going to I'm not going to rock your socks off here or anything folks but me is an interesting subject when it comes to staking and validators and which validators choose to use me you know some have opt-ins and opt outs some just think that it's unethical and kind of opt out of it you know what is your perspective on me when it comes to yield generation is it something that something that we should embrace and and
acquire more yield or is there some sort of ethical dilem or are you kind of in the middle I think it depends person on person like person to person like the thing with SSV is like we are completely agnostic so we we provide the protocol and people have to decide what they want to do so having an infrastructure provider like having an infrastructure where other people can build their applications so let's say for instance you are a um you want to build an Institutional staking solution right so let's say you're based in the US so you can come to SSV you can use the network node operators to build your institutional staking platform but you can also choose your relays so you can choose or you'll look at the node operators and each node operator will
show which relays they're using yeah so if you're an Institutional staking like company in the US and you want to only produce ofac compliant blocks you can be like okay I'm only choosing node operators which have these relays right so once again if you want to maximize profits go ahead I mean you can choose all of the relays or you can choose node operators that are using all of the relays if you don't feel like that you know like depending like what you want to do that's what I saying completely agnostic yeah I mean crypto is all about optionality yeah I mean that's why we're here you get to opt out of your system and you get to opt into the crypto world and in this case you know opting into Mev for more profits or not based on regulatory based on personal preference ethics manes whichever you really want
to call it yeah yeah and I mean that's an interesting one to me because it it's like crypto is like this trustless network where if it's there it's going to be taken right it hacks exploits all these negative things happen me just has this kind of bad taste in the mouth of people in crypto because I think companies like flash Bots and different types of companies just absolutely Hammer Traders on Unis swaping things but when it comes to block you know block producing and that separation of proposer and Builder and kind of finding those little places where you can front run yeah it's like does it really count if ta way way down here on the stack but it's happening anyway yeah people are producing like Boulders are creating block like relays or doing all their
things like some people you know I've heard of cases where someone got like a 200 heat bonus from like an me opportunity it's absolutely wild but it's just like you know are you what is your what is your flavor yeah what is your flavor that's right all right well where can our community Find You On on socials or how can we get involved for sure uh so Discord is like the number one place if you have any questions pop us a question on Discord we have a website sv. Network you can literally just put that in have the website hell yeah and from there you can navigate to our grants opportunities you can navigate to our notion pages and like have a look at the different committees in SSV uh so yeah obviously Twitter as well so yeah Twitter is like most of our
social stuff but if you really want to be part of the community and get like the DV or the SSV Alpha essentially Discord is definitely the place to be yeah hell yeah man thank you so much for the time I appreciate it same dude DBT baby
