Sergey Gorbunov

Sergey Gorbunov is a cryptographer and distributed systems researcher who co-founded Axelar, the decentralized cross-chain interoperability network, and led its development company, Interop Labs, as CEO. He earned his PhD at MIT as a Microsoft PhD fellow, winning the Sprowls award for the best computer science thesis for his work on lattice-based cryptography for the cloud, and he has been a professor at the University of Waterloo. Earlier, he was a founding team member at Algorand, where he worked on core platform design and led the cryptography group, including the effort to standardize BLS signatures later adopted by Ethereum. In 2025 Circle agreed to acquire the Interop Labs team and technology, bringing Gorbunov to Circle, where he has worked on Arc, Circle's EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain, and its TEE-based privacy features.
