Erik Reppel
Erik Reppel is the founder of a new company as of 2026, following two stints as an engineer at Coinbase, most recently as head of engineering for the Coinbase Developer Platform. He created x402, an open protocol that embeds payments into HTTP so that software and AI agents can transact directly; Coinbase launched it in May 2025 and it processed more than 100 million payments within six months, after which governance moved to an independent x402 Foundation built with Cloudflare. Before his second stint at Coinbase, he led engineering across protocol, backend, frontend, mobile, and security at Zora for three years and worked as a staff machine learning platform engineer at Clubhouse, having started his career as a machine learning intern on Coinbase's own team. He remains an advisor to Coinbase on agentic commerce and sits on the x402 Technical Steering Committee. His ETV talk, a workshop on building with x402 agents, paid APIs, and embedded wallets given at ETHGlobal Buenos Aires, traces the protocol work he is best known for.
